In his 1998 book, The Threat, Jacobs uncovered disconcerting reports about aliens' plans for the future of Earth. He reported that a "change" is coming; a future when very human-like hybrids would intermingle with humans in everyday life. "Soon we will all be together," the aliens said. "Soon everyone will be happy and everyone will know his place."

This book examines a disturbing phenomenon that Jacobs began noticing in 2003. The alien integration action plan has kicked into high gear. The incidents of alien abductions have accelerated as have occurrences of alien involvement in everyday human life. A silent and insidious invasion has begun. Alien hybrids have moved into your neighborhood and into your workplace. They have been trained by human abductees to "pass," to blend in to society, to appear as normal as your next door neighbor.

This book illustrates in detail the process of alien integration into society and the strategy and support structure that has been developed to make this happen seamlessly. While he is not certain why they are doing it, the final chapter of the book will provide some chilling possible answers as to why they are here and what they want to accomplish.

Jacobs is a careful researcher who has investigated more than 1150 abduction events experienced by more than 150 abductees. This book focuses on the experiences of thirteen abductees.

Walking Among Us: The Alien Plan to Control Humanity, by David M. Jacobs PhD

Review "David Jacobs has spent his career as a history professor at a major university, and--what matters most of all--he backs his claims with an impressive mass of evidence.…Jacobs treats his subject with ethnographic depth and detail, but without academic ponderousness." --Thomas E. Bullard, PhD, board member, Center for UFO Studies and Fund for UFO Research and author of UFO Abductions: The Measure of a Mystery"Once we accept the extraterrestrial origin of UFOs and that the beings can act purposefully as rational beings invariably do, it is only a small step from UFO phenomena to the co-residency of the two species. It is this logical consistency that makes Walking Among Us constantly grip our imagination with such vengeance." --Young-hae Chi, D Phil, faculty of Oriental studies, University of Oxford"Walking Among Us is a chronicle of human experience that contradicts every current theory about the universe that we think we live in. Jacobs' human observers have experienced a concealed reality that is literally next door to some of us, and that he believes is about to interact, secretly and insidiously, with the rest of us. Walking Among Us explains why extraterrestrial UFOs are here, who is aboard them, and what they are doing. To put it mildly, the evidence from the people that Jacobs has interviewed shows that the extraterrestrials are up to no good. You will find Walking Among Us hard to put down. If enough of us read and pay attention to the evidence in this book, we might be able to avoid the disaster that its evidence portends." --Don C. Donderi, PhD, associate professor (retired) of psychology, McGill University, Montreal, author of UFOs, ETs, and Alien Abductions"David Jacobs has written an extremely important book about UFO abductees and the meaning of their abductions." --Ron Westrum, PhD, emeritus professor of sociology, Eastern Michigan University

The purpose behind the abduction program, from the greatest researcher in the field By The Guardian No-one could justifiably claim Dr. David Jacobs to be a prolific writer. 23 years after `Secret Life' and 16 years following `The Threat', this 2015 publication is the author's third book about the alien abduction program. In `Walking Among Us', Dr. Jacobs focuses on the purpose behind the program and the precise details of how and possibly why it has been carried out on humanity for the past century or so, with some enlightening and genuinely shocking conclusions. You may have read similar words before to describe/publicise works on this subject, but here - for once - it turns out to be true. The content of the book is radically different not only to the author's previous work, but to all other published work to date on this important but puzzling subject. WAU is not, in fact, about `alien abductions' per se, but has a focus far deeper and more radical. The conclusions may explain not only what the UFO phenomenon really is, but the origin and nature of many apparently unrelated `paranormal' phenomena frequently reported by percipients. Here Dr. Jacobs focuses on the reported experiences of 15 abductees, almost all unknown to each other. The author has worked with each of these abductees for at least several years and in some cases for decades. From 2003, some - but importantly not all (to understand why, you'll need to read the book) - abductees began to describe precise details about the process of integration into society by alien `hubrids' (they're different to `hybrids') and the planned support structure built to enable this process. The testimonies of this important subset of abductees seem absurd to anyone unfamiliar with the evidence, but are nevertheless largely mutually corroborative. Dr. Jacobs sets the context of these testimonies thus:"One important factor in understanding...is that people's descriptions of their astonishing experiences go against their own best interests. Successful and high-functioning men and women, many with advanced professional degrees (PhDs, MDs, LLDs), risk their reputations and livelihoods to relate their experiences. Physicians, successful business people, attorneys, psychologists, psychiatrists, scientists, university professors, graduate students, librarians and others from various socio-economic groups...all risk ridicule when they say they are being abducted by beings not of this Earth. Describing these events to others makes the reporter seem too unstable to occupy a position of authority and responsibility...yet the need for many abductees to understand what has been happening to them overcomes the risk of disclosure. They come to me because they are driven to find a rational explanation for the seemingly irrational activities that have intruded upon their lives..."Even to be interested in the subject is to make others question the quality of that person's mind. Abductees confront this early on and the vast majority of them learn to keep their memories to themselves."To describe in detail the content of the middle chapters of the book would be a `spoiler'. It's sufficient to say, dear reader, that you have never heard details like this before. It's radical, it's revelatory, it's all new...and part of a logical, coherent pattern. The final chapter is where the author brings together the evidence, demonstrates why the UFO subject remaining "solidly outside of the paradigm of legitimate scientific or academic research" fits the goals of the program precisely and why the program is now beyond the point where it might be stopped or thwarted. This chapter is an excellent and well-argued essay on its own: radical, original, highly intelligent and perceptive, and the cornerstone of the thesis put forward by Dr. Jacobs in this book. None of this was understood until now, but the way Dr. Jacobs presents his case, it makes absolute sense. I for one hope he's wrong about this, but the evidence presented and the specific conclusions about the abductors is very compelling. As a career-professional academic (though now retired from university life), Dr. Jacobs' writing style is erudite and highly literate with structured arguments explained for the intelligent reader. Despite the weighty subject matter, his writing has a light touch and is a joy to read. As usual there is no new-age mush or ungrounded speculation. Even if your personal belief-system can't accept the author's conclusions (which is likely for a significant minority of readers), you'll likely find WAU an absorbing read and real page-turner.Unconditionally recommended as essential reading for anyone interested in, or personally touched by, these extraordinary and pervasive phenomena. An instant classic.

A little too much emphasis on telling various stories about how the hubrids are being taught to adapt to modern western life and not enough discussion on the motives behind the phenomenon. I found myself skipping the narrative and searching for the more interesting sections in which the author presents his ideas about what he thinks is really going on. A frightening and startling book, but not for those with closed minds.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. I hope he's wrong By Craig Lang In "Walking among us," Dr. Jacobs builds a chilling - and perhaps plausible - scenario. He uses data that he has obtained from interviews with close encounter experiencers (he exclusively calls them abductees) to build a scenario that is not pretty. Is he right? I don't know. But I sure hope not.Dr. Jacobs describes extensive interaction between abductees and what he calls "Hubrids" or human-hybrids. These are a final step in the incorporation of some type of alien genetics into a being who is apparently fully alien, but at the same time has all the characteristics of humans. He describes their apparent agenda as that of integration into human society, followed by takeover of our world.Do other researchers see similar patterns? In our own research, we have encountered similar reports of what I refer to as "human-aliens" - apparently anomalous people that have human appearance but vary alien behavior and abilities. So are the narratives Jacobs describes accurate? Are they the full story? If so, is the peril Jacobs describes as real as he portrays? Again, I don't know, but I sure hope not.Does the hypnotic process Jacobs uses result in accurate information? Is the scenario in this book credible? Are there other possible explanations for the close encounter phenomenon? Is the "alien agenda" truly as stealthy and malevolent as Jacobs portrays? Or are other more likely motives behind whatever force or intelligence is behind it? I for one, do not know what the truth is behind the close encounter phenomenon. So perhaps it has at least some claim to being correct. The ideas in this book will require a lot of corroboration. But whether or not the scenario turns out to be true, "Walking among us" presents a chilling new step in UFO and close encounter research. And in the end, I sure hope he's wrong.

After all, I am a man and I feared that the chick-lit-iness of the tome would be beyond me.I need not have worried. Molly Hacker is a heroine that speaks across genders, laying bare the foibles, the fancies and the philosophy of the human condition when it comes to love.Molly is an endearing character, full of contradiction. She is smart, sassy and sexy but she's also vulnerable, self reflective, searching for love - even though she might deny it.Lisette's writing style is immediately accessible. It is smart, cracking and paints a picture vividly. Her characters are well drawn and appealing and none are wasted in a taut and attractive story.I thoroughly enjoyed Molly's trials and tribulations and I have to admit, I'm now hooked on chick-lit.Molly Hacker Is Too Picky is a feel good must read.

Fun, witty, and insightful By Christa Polkinhorn As so many of Lisette Brodey's fans, I "met" Molly Hacker on her blog and was very curious to "connect" with her again in the novel. She is quite a character, witty, spunky, and a good sport. However, when it comes to finding Mr. Right, she has to overcome quite a few obstacles: her own somewhat confused ideas and feelings about love, her well-meaning but somewhat pushy friends, an important woman (the she-devil) in the media industry who is out to sabotage her.To say that the book is entertaining is an understatement. It is a real page-turner, devilishly funny, engaging, and sensitive. It deals in an insightful way with problems of love, friendships, and relationships we all struggle with sometimes. And it gives us a fascinating, tongue-in-cheek picture of the world of journalism and the media.Molly for all her blunders is someone you just have to like. All the characters are well-developed, vivid, and genuine. I particularly enjoyed the exchange between Molly and her best buddy, Randy. What a riot!Another successful story by a very talented author!

Schultz I've been enthralled with Lisette Brodey's books since I picked up "Crooked Moon" and was blown away by the brilliance of her style, unique characters and the emotion she engendered in the reader--me. Molly Hacker Is Too Picky demonstrates how a single woman on her journey to find love, can also experience lots of laughter, tears and life-long friendships along the way.The repartee between her and office pal Randy,is fodder for some of the best humor between friends that has ever been written. Author Brodey excels at both character development and realistic but entertaining dialogue that makes her characters come alive before your eyes. They are unveiled in such a way that the reader gets to know them with their foibles and their tender qualities. These are people that one might love to have as friends for a lifetime. And on her journey to find love, Molly finds herself, appreciates her strengths and realizes she may not be too picky after all.In fact, she deserves to have the best people surround her as each nurtures the other along the way.If you haven't read Molly hacker Is Too Picky! you are missing a wonderful experience!

And what are the implications for her behavior later in life? The world's leading expert on self-control, Walter Mischel has proven that the ability to delay gratification is critical for a successful life, predicting higher SAT scores, better social and cognitive functioning, a healthier lifestyle and a greater sense of self-worth. The Marshmallow Test: Why Self-Control Is the Engine of Success, by Walter Mischel

Review "The discoveries that grew out of the marshmallow studies add up to one of the most insightful research stories in the history of psychology. Whatever it is now, your view of human nature will change profoundly as you read this brilliant book."―Daniel Kahneman, author of Thinking Fast and Slow"A fascinating book. It is such an addictive treat that I had no self-control in reading it, until I understood that I could actually improve my self-control, and from then on I was in marshmallow heaven. Stimulating, fun, clear, lively, and drawn from rigorous studies. It's not only accessible, but very convincing. Seriously, I love it."―Alan Alda, actor, writer, science communication advocate"The book we've all been waiting for. ... [Mischel] illustrates with solid research and insightful anecdote the most important claim of the book: that self-control can be taught and mastered."―Angela Lee Duckworth, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, and a 2013 MacArthur Foundation Fellow"This is an amazing - eye-opening, transformative, riveting - book from one of the greatest psychologists of our time. Mischel delivers the powerful message that self-control can be enhanced, and shows us how!"―Carol S. Dweck, Professor of Psychology, Stanford University, author of Mindset"a charmingly told scientific story, makes clear the test is not just about youngsters, but is helpful to us all in the marshmallow moments we face through life. Mischel has written a wonderful book, engaging, enlightening, and profound."―Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence and Focus"This marvelous book is unique, and beautifully written from beginning to end. The range that Walter Mischel covers-from creative cognitive science to neuroscience to genetics-is breathtaking. This speaks for science at its best. Bravo!"―Eric R. Kandel, MD, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, University Professor, Department of Neuroscience, Columbia University, author of The Age of Insight and In Search of Memory"Walter Mischel is one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century, and The Marshmallow Test will make him one of the most influential in this century, too."―Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and the author of The Better Angels of Our Nature."Walter Mischel has changed psychologists' view of human potential, and The Marshmallow Test will change yours. The book is full of insights about self-control and how to master it, though it does create one impulse that is hard to resist-the desire to read the book cover to cover. It is both a fascinating story of a brilliant researcher at work and a recipe for how to change one's life."―Timothy Wilson, Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia, author of Redirect

97 of 103 people found the following review helpful. The best book on self-control thus far, by the man who started it all. By Dr. Chuck Chakrapani The Marshmallow Test by Walter Mischel, the man who started it all, is a book on self-control, probably the best one on the subject thus far. This book is everything that the currently leading book on the subject (Willpower by Baumeister and Tierney) is not: intellectually coherent, scientifically sophisticated, and concerned more about sound reasoning than about sound bites.Research on self-control was probably started in earnest in the 1960s with Walter Mischel's celebrated "Marshmallow Test". Children around the age of five were given a choice between one marshmallow now or two marshmallows later, a delay lasting up to 20 minutes. While some ate the marshmallow right away, others used different strategies to control themselves such as averting their gaze, pulling their hair, squirming, closing their eyes or just sniffing the marshmallow and putting it back. The implications of this research came to life when researchers went back to the same children several years later. They found children who exercised self-control and waited 15 or 20 minutes to double their payoff had higher grade point averages, made more money and were fitter (as measured by BMI) when they were adults.Genetics clearly plays a role in the level of self-control one has. The message of the book is that genetics is not destiny. Willpower is a cognitive ability and, because our brains are much more plastic than had been imagined in the past, we can substantially increase this crucial ability to control ourselves. This book shows how to gain more self-control.Paralleling Daniel Kahneman's model of "fast" and "slow" thinking, Mischel describes two systems in the brain: "hot" (limbic) and "cold" (prefrontal cortex). The hot system deals with immediate rewards and threats while the cold system deals with delayed consequences. The key to self-control is cooling the hot system where appropriate. We need to learn to activate our prefrontal cortex first before the limbic system kicks in.Can we actually increase our self-control? Mischel's response is yes, if you believe you can and if you really want to. In other words, you can increase your self-control if you approach it with a mindset that believes that increasing self-control is possible as opposed to a helpless mindset that believes willpower is a limited resource over which you have no control. But just having the right mindset may not be enough. We need strategies to cool our warm system.Commonly used strategies for self-control often include removing the source of temptations (don't have junk foods around, if you are trying to eat healthy) or surrounding yourself with people who do not eat junk food. But these strategies are likely to fail without effective pre-commitment. You can remove all cigarettes from sight and yet mooch them from others. You can clear junk food from the kitchen and yet help yourself to sugar-laden cookies in business meetings. Mischel suggests that we should use more robust strategies based on research. Some such strategies are:* MAKE UP "IF...THEN" RULES. We tend to react to cues out of habit. Create new habits with new cues. IF I go to a restaurant, THEN I will start my meal with a salad. IF I get an email notification, THEN I will finish the next item on my to-do list before reading the email. When well-rehearsed and practiced, the desired behavior is triggered automatically without effort.* COOL THE NOW, HEAT THE LATER. Vividly imagine the negative consequences of immediate gratification: Whenever you are tempted to smoke, visualize the picture of a cancerous lung. If you are tempted overeat, visualize the picture of a person who is unfit and out of shape.* DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM THE SITUATION. Refer to yourself in the third person. Instead of saying "I've to finish the report by tomorrow", I can say "Chuck has to finish the report by tomorrow." This way you distance yourself and change your role to that of an observer. This makes the completion of the task easier.* SHIFT YOUR FOCUS FROM HOT TO COOL PROPERTIES. Shift your attention from the hot to the not-so-hot attributes of the stimulus: Instead of looking at the chocolate as a tasty flavorful treat look at it as a brown square, wrapped in paper. By focusing your attention on the on the cool attributes of a stimulus, we can decrease its appeal. What about all that talk we hear about willpower being a limited resource, the mysterious "ego energy" - whatever that is - being "depleted" fast dragging your willpower along with it (which you can apparently restore with the help of glucose) and the oft-quoted generalization that "willpower is like a muscle"? Mischel wisely ignores such half-baked and sound bite oriented interpretation of research data by Baumeister and associates and gently points to the work done by Carol Dweck of Stanford University, which suggests self-control is not a limited resource and one's mindset can affect one's level of self-control.While the book summarizes relevant research leading to its conclusions, it is much more than that. It is part a self-help book and part a look back at the work of an eminent psychologist who, at 84 years age, has chosen to share his wisdom gained through a lifetime of research in his first-ever nonacademic book. A man with nothing prove after 55 years in the academe and over 200 publications to his credit, Walter Mischel wears his wisdom lightly. He says in the introduction that he imagined himself "having a leisurely conversation with you, the reader". What a conversation it is!

Bukowsky Dr. Walter Mischel administered "The Marshmallow Test," to young children at Standford University's Bing Nursery School in the 1960s. This study showed that even four and five year olds are capable of delaying gratification. What no one could have predicted is that many children who successfully resisted eating a tempting treat (in order to receive a greater reward later) carried this trait with them into later life. In this work of non-fiction, Mischel, who has a PhD in clinical psychology and has taught at Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia University, explores the concept of self-control in depth and explains how we can use cognitive skills to cool down our "hot impulses." By doing so, we may empower ourselves to make more constructive decisions.Mischel draws on decades of studies that shed light on "who we are; what we can be; how our minds work; how we can--and can't--control our impulses, emotions, and dispositions; how we can change; and how we can raise and educate our children." The author asks: Can we reduce the number of school dropouts? Stick to weight-loss and exercise regimens? Save more for our retirement? Create educational programs that will build character and help our kids succeed in their professional and personal lives? Unfortunately, helping people do the right thing (provided we even know what the right thing is) is not easy; many of us procrastinate, rationalize, and have difficulty staying motivated. Common sense is uncommon, and few people are consistently prudent in every area of their lives. However, trying to use proper cognitive skills to achieve important goals often pays rich dividendsThe book's conversational style, humane and compassionate message, and entertaining anecdotes make it a pleasure to read. Dr. Mischel does not talk down to us as he addresses questions that many people are curious about, such as "Is self-control prewired?" Although he does not presume to have all the answers--after all, our knowledge of how the human mind works is far from complete--Mischel gives us the benefit of years of experience at looking into the practical implications (positive and negative) of impulse control. By keeping our emotions from always getting the better of us--by employing "strategies and insights, as well as goals and motivation"--Mischel suggests that we are more likely to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

His book masterfully summarizes a long line of research on self-control and motivation that, as a school psychologist, I have been fascinated with for some time. Thankfully, Mischel is able to step outside the academic stodginess of research articles to tell the stories behind them. However, I think many readers will be disappointed by Mischel's discussion of the implications of this research because he ultimately ends with what I would call "evidence-based platitudes." His recommendations for helping children develop self-control consist of strategies that virtually every reader would have presupposed. Namely, reward effort (not outcomes), be consistent, and be a good role model. If you are looking for a life-altering read, these "insights" are likely to disappoint (judging from the more critical reviews here on Amazon). But the reason I give the book three stars (despite the engaging writing) is that in several sections throughout the book Mischel seems to suggest that research-informed self-control training can only be found in programs like KIPP charter schools. In truth, these insights have been discussed in the educational literature for a very long time, and I sincerely doubt that there is a teacher education program anywhere that does not train these strategies. The implementation, however, varies as a function of local resources and parent support (two things that KIPP definitely has going for it). In another example, Mischel highlights a specific study on computer-based cognitive training, even though meta-analyses of this literature suggests that it is, at best, minimally effective in immediate, near-transfer learning tasks (no benefit for delayed, near- or far-transfer tasks). I'm sure many readers will read this section and come away with the impression that cognitive training is the wave of the future (it's not).In short, Mischel relies heavily on anecdotes to tell his stories, and the selection of these anecdotes inescapably creates subtle and unfortunate spin that folks unfamiliar with the literature could easily misinterpret.

« Décapsuleur de bonne humeur ! »

After two fantastic books, I am among his fans who is wondering how many more great books he might have in his head and why he won't hurry and get them published!Rio Feo - a forgotten outpost in remote New Mexico where people are watching their town shrivel up and blow away. Tommy Gunn arrives fresh from a whirlwind of crime, evasion, accidents and recovery to try to re-build his life as a basketball coach. Raised in Kentucky on basketball, Gunn has opted for shortcuts and ends up cutting himself short. But through it all, we just can't help but like this guy and want him to get his life on track. The characters are believable and so funny that you'll laugh out loud throughout this smart, funny and well-crafted tale. The story is filled to the brim with human frailty and the strength we find when we learn to give and receive love. What a story! Don't miss this outstanding read!

Welcome to Subirdia presents a surprising discovery: the suburbs of many large cities support incredible biological diversity. Populations and communities of a great variety of birds, as well as other creatures, are adapting to the conditions of our increasingly developed world. In this fascinating and optimistic book, John Marzluff reveals how our own actions affect the birds and animals that live in our cities and towns, and he provides ten specific strategies everyone can use to make human environments friendlier for our natural neighbors.   Over many years of research and fieldwork, Marzluff and student assistants have closely followed the lives of thousands of tagged birds seeking food, mates, and shelter in cities and surrounding areas. From tiny Pacific wrens to grand pileated woodpeckers, diverse species now compatibly share human surroundings. By practicing careful stewardship with the biological riches in our cities and towns, Marzluff explains, we can foster a new relationship between humans and other living creatures—one that honors and enhances our mutual destiny.

Welcome to Subirdia: Sharing Our Neighborhoods with Wrens, Robins, Woodpeckers, and Other Wildlife, by John M. Marzluff

Review "Enjoy and bond with nature where you live and work. Marzluff has done this, and it has given him contagious joy that shows in the pages of this enjoyable and informative book."—New York Review of Books (New York Review of Books)"As Marzluff shows in this rich account of fieldwork in ‘metropolitan wilds’ from New Zealand to Costa Rica, such annexed environments – which boast some 75 billion trees in the United States alone – can host  an astounding diversity of birds. But, he argues passionately, intelligently and with scientific authority, any land-use change reweaves the ecological web, and may leave it threadbare."—Nature (Nature 2014-11-06)"…this book is a terrific compilation of facts about suburban wildlife (much more than birds, and well beyond its US core). There are awful statistics —about cats especially, but also skyscraper collisions, poisons and habitat loss— and many happily more positive ones."—Rob Hume, Birdwatch (Rob Hume Birdwatch 2015-02-01)

From the Author Q: You started your research studying crows, jays, and ravens. What was the catalyst for making the transition to birds and wildlife in urban areas?   A: Moving to Seattle in the late 1990s, I was confronted with a rapidly growing urban area that was spilling into relatively wild country. When a large forest near my home became a high-end subdivision, I knew I had to take a closer look. Researching how birds and other wildlife responded to development was a perfect way to combine my love of pure science with my desire to offer planners, developers, and others relevant ecological knowledge.    Q: The research you and your students and postdocs undertake requires many patient and persistent observers. About how many have contributed to your research in subirdia and for how long?   A: To understand the ups and downs of bird populations and the natural booms and busts of birth and death requires a decade or more of standardized measurement. For thirteen years, teams of eight to ten of us (including undergraduates, doctoral students, postdocs, master’s candidates, and interns) took to the woods and streets every spring and summer.    Q: What do you hope readers will take away from their experience of encountering Welcome to Subirdia?   A: A better understanding of and appreciation for the ecosystem we call “home” and the tools needed to nurture a life enriched by our wild neighbors. Praise for In the Company of Crows and Ravens: "Learning how to slow down and observe animals around us is one simple way to form a stronger bond with nature.  In the Company of Crows and Ravens is a subtle and beautiful reminder of this simple truth."—Susan Salter Reynolds, Los Angeles Times Book Review   Praise for Gifts of the Crow: “Delightful. . . . A series of intriguing stories and stunning illustrations that together reveal the sophisticated cognitive abilities of crows and their relationship with humans."—Nature

About the Author John M. Marzluff is James W. Ridgeway Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington and lives in Snohonish, WA. The author or coauthor of more than 130 scientific papers and five books, he is a renowned ornithologist and urban ecologist. Jack DeLap is a Ph.D. candidate in wildlife science at the University of Washington. His natural science illustrations have appeared in a variety of books and journals. He lives in Seattle, WA.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Welcome to Subirdia By Clare O'Beara This book mainly focuses on mainland America but also looks at Britain and Hawaii. We see that bird species have had to cope with the spread of urban habitats and some have thrived while others have been lost or reduced.Species are categorised as avoiders, adapters or exploiters of urban habitats. The author lists nine ways to make our home areas more attractive and helpful to birds. These include putting up nest boxes, adding stickers or blinds to high windows and planting berry bushes in the garden. Birds eat insects, garden pests and rodents as well as delighting us with their song, colour and activities. Other benefits of a suburban habitat include riverine edges, a blend of city and rural areas and mixed garden types along with golf courses. Many other creatures live in these environments such as amphibians, fish and reptiles. The illustrations are gorgeous, showing birds in their environments, and the combination should inspire both keen bird watchers and those beginning nature study to get out, look and make a better bird garden.Try combining this with 'The Urban Birder' by David Lindo about his life in London and beyond. He focuses on specific areas within a city that are rich bird habitats, such as parks and reservoirs.

An interesting and educational read, suitable for anyone with even a passing interest in ornithology By Melankalia As the title suggests, this book includes a great deal of information on how specific species adapt to, or are hindered by life within human communities. Including—but not limited to—topics such as ecology, conservation and evolution, the text details the impact of our modern lifestyle on the health and welfare the bird population. Written in a straight-forward easy to understand style, the book comes across as half textbook, half auto-biographical.The one minor issue I had was that the book can be a little repetitive. There are multiple listings of birds counted in various places, which is very interesting…at first. After a while though, it becomes fairly repetitive and difficult to not want to skip over. All in all, an interesting and educational read, suitable for anyone with even a passing interest in ornithology.[ARC received courtesy of Netgalley]

As agricultural land and forests give way to suburbs, it's easy to think of the animals and birds displaced, but the suburbs is a haven for wildlife. Those providing habitat including cover, food and water, provide a huge resource for wildlife often not seen as being wildlife habitat. The book also looks at mammals and others that adapt and re-adapt to the changing landscape, and the nonnative species that come in, from sparrows to rats to pigeons. It's easy to think of national parks as wildlife areas, but viewing a suburban back yard as a wildlife haven may be a stretch for some.As we cleared snags and old trees, some species disappear - critical habitat for these depends on those 'eyesores' that often are undisturbed only in remote areas. Coming in are a wide range of songbirds that welcome the suburbs. Whether you're a serious birder, a wildlife buff or just like feeding the cardinals, this is an interesting look at something most don't give much thought to, but should.

My only knowledge of her had been the movies made from her work, i.e., Giant and Showboat. When I read her, I was totally amazed that she was not required reading in college lit courses, rather than the usual "romance" writers like Austen. The humor, the breadth of characterization, the essential sympathy of human male and female psychology makes her one of the best writers I have ever read. I intend to read all of her works!

They seemed cold, brittle, and flat compared to the broad swash of history and color of Saratoga Trunk or Giant.
