Matched In Heaven, by Angela Page

Review I absolutely loved this story! Such a unique plot, very different from anything I have ever read before. Angela Page is a brilliant satirical writer and is not afraid to push the envelope. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style; colorful comments, drama, and some indecent language to drive home a point, all add to the wit and charm of the story. I highly recommend "Matched in Heaven" by Angela Page for a refreshing, witty, and humorous spin on life and romance, in this world and the next.Reviewed by Sheri Hoyte for Reader Views (12/15)

It was not a light hearted take on heaven and deceased spouses working in the lives of their earthly family. I did not enjoy the use of the "f" word. I felt it was not necessary to the story line. Even if heaven is managed and run by a committee...I do not think there would use this language and be so focused on sexual relationship. Just was not my idea of a good book.

By Cory Speece Not having many life experiences to draw on for comparison, I was a bit worried I wouldn't connect with the characters or the story. Angela has done a wonderful job of keeping me captivated throughout the book. The storyline is unique and Angela's use of wit and playfully dark humor is woven through a subject matter that could otherwise be awkward or difficult to read/process. The various tangents and subplots of this book come together incredibly well and offer up a few surprises towards the end that left my jaw open with shock.Overall, this genre is not my go-to for casual reading, but I greatly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to a friend.

I think the premise was good, but it didn't seem to flow well in the novel. I never really connected with any of the characters. The characters never seemed to grow or learn anything. Also, the characters seemed inconsistent. Overall, it was an ok read, but nothing to write home about. Thank you to netgalley for a copy of the book.

" Charlotte McAntic spent her thirties, forties, and even fifties in peace and harmony aligning her marriage, mortgage, careers, and children. As she stumbles into a new phase of life—also known as the Golden Years—Charli cannot help but wonder where the gold and her husband, Pud, are hiding. Pud is happily cruising down the retirement path that, for him, leads straight to the golf course. While Charli spends her days at home cleaning out closets and the basement, she yearns to gaze deeply into Pud’s blue eyes and remember all the reasons why she fell in love with him thirty years ago. Unfortunately, the only thing Pud is eying is the next fairway. Knowing there is more to savor in retirement than silver-hair shampoos, senior discounts, and hernia surgery, Charli embarks on a quest to do whatever it takes to spend retirement in the embrace of the man she loves. But is it too late for happily ever after? In this humorous novel, a high-energy wife and her solid guy must learn to adjust to a new chapter in their lives and find their way back into each other’s hearts after their retirement begins with a jolt. Pud and Charli have been happily married for thirty years, but have led “parallel lives”. Pud travelled a lot for his work while Charli kept house and raised their two boys. Then, Pud retires. Now what? The answer differs for Pud and Charli. Pud finds his new vocation on the golf course, taking it up as a religion, disappointing Charli, who had hoped to spend more time together. She takes on projects, such as scanning over a hundred years’ worth of family photos into the computer, which leads to reflection and new perspectives. You will smile a lot while reading this very personal story, about regular people, told in slices of everyday life. In one scene, while driving in the car, we’re let in on Charli’s mental preparations to confront Pud about “the golf problem”, so entertaining, and I laughed out loud.Nothing earth-shattering happens except the very events that shape our lives. Eternal optimist Charli serves them up warm, in a pleasant and engaging first person narrative, with heartening sides of grace, wisdom and humour to accompany the soul-enriching fare. The take-away message is that at each stage of life we change, adapt and grow, as we “press on”, with the love of family as our bedrock. For a cozy, lovely, feel-good read, this story is highly recommended.

I could not put this fun, engaging, witty and colorful book down. As a mature woman I can so relate to Charli, the main character, who gives us her inside view of life after her husband Pud's retirement. Her days are filled with humorous moments that had me rolling in laughter. Her character Charli is so understandable and believable as I think every married mom has had many a day like hers. As light and comical as the book is, the story is also quite heart warming and touching and I found myself dabbing a soft tear here and there. If you want a fun novel that will touch all of your emotions, is hysterically funny yet still reflective, you must try this new author Jena C. Henry. I can't wait to read her next book, so keep them coming!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Completely Captivating By Quiqie Ok so I finished the book a couple of days ago and I was surprised at how captivating it was! The book really did a great job enticing the reader again and again to finish out each chapter. This is not a book where you can just skim the first couple pages of a chapter, because you'll for sure pull the reader in to the rest of the pages. For a first book from this author I'm extremely excited to see what comes next as the author will inevitably evolve her style.Even if you don't think this genre will take you to that secret place you hope all books will guide you to, I assure you it will.

In the past, the brain was considered an autonomous organ, self-contained and completely separate from the body’s immune system. But over the past twenty years, neuroimmunologist Michal Schwartz, together with her research team, not only has overturned this misconception but has brought to light revolutionary new understandings of brain health and repair. In this book Schwartz describes her research journey, her experiments, and the triumphs and setbacks that led to the discovery of connections between immune system and brain. Michal Schwartz, with Anat London, also explains the significance of the findings for future treatments of brain disorders and injuries, spinal cord injuries, glaucoma, depression, and other conditions such as brain aging and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.   Scientists, physicians, medical students, and all readers with an interest in brain function and its relationship to the immune system in health and disease will find this book a valuable resource. With general readers in mind, the authors provide a useful primer to explain scientific terms and concepts discussed in the book.

Review “Professor Schwartz and her lab have addressed the relationship between the nervous and immune systems in a novel way, providing significant new insights and perspectives in neuroimmunology.”—Pablo Villoslada, IDIBAPS and UCSF (Pablo Villoslada)“Dr. Schwartz has written a compelling book focusing on her research into the immune-brain connection. She has made quantum leaps in many different fields of medicine.”—C. Jane Welsh, Texas A&M University (C. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. interesting By XY Pros:+ readers who enjoy medical 'popular science' books should like this book. It is difficult to translate complex technical ideas into a form that can be successfully digested by the general public.+ the book has a highly applied orientation, describing how this line of research could deliver concrete benefits for human healthCons:+ many of the hypotheses seem rather speculative at this point+ scientific rigor is lacking in many of the results presented. This is probably a consequence of publishing a 'popular science' book rather than any intrinsic defect in the research. For example, the book mentions in a couple of places that three of eight patients participating in a clinical trial recovered clinically significant neurological motor and sensor function. What about the patients in the control group? Was there a control group? In other places, the book presents correlational claims and then makes a leap to a causal claim without justification. Again, the work to justify a causal claim was probably done - it's just not presented in this book.+ if I were a rat or mouse that had recently learned that I was destined for the author's lab, I would commit suicide rather than experience what might be in store: a crushed optic nerve, severed spine, castration, or other horrors. It's unfortunate that some types of science must mutilate animals in this fashion in order to advance.

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. It is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived.Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. He dirties his clothes in a fight and is made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. He cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He then trades the treasures for Sunday School tickets which one normally receives for memorizing verses, redeeming them for a Bible, much to the surprise and bewilderment of the superintendent who thought "it was simply preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his premises—a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt." Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" by kissing him. But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been "engaged" previously to Amy Lawrence. Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness a trio of graverobbers, Dr. Robinson, Muff Potter and the halfbreed Injun Joe, getting into a fight. While Potter is knocked unconscious during the scuffle, Injun Joe knifes the doctor to death and later pins the blame on Potter, who is arrested and charged with murder. Tom and Huck run away to an island. While enjoying their new found freedom, they become aware that the community is sounding the river for their bodies. Tom sneaks back home one night to observe the commotion. After a brief moment of remorse at his loved ones' suffering, he is struck by the idea of appearing at his own funeral. Back in school, Tom gets himself back in Becky's favor after he nobly accepts the blame for a book she has ripped. Soon, Muff Potter's trial begins, in which Tom testifies against Injun Joe. Potter is acquitted, but Injun Joe flees the courtroom through a window. Tom then fears for his life as Injun Joe is at large and can easily find him. Summer arrives, and Tom and Huck go hunting for buried treasure in a haunted house. After venturing upstairs they hear a noise below. Peering through holes in the floor, they see Injun Joe disguised as a deaf-mute Spaniard; Injun Joe and his companion plan to bury some stolen treasure of their own. From their hiding spot, Tom and Huck wriggle with delight at the prospect of digging it up. Huck begins to shadow Injun Joe nightly, watching for an opportunity to nab the gold. Meanwhile, Tom goes on a picnic to McDougal's Cave with Becky and their classmates. In his overconfidence, Tom strays off the marked paths with Becky and they get hopelessly lost. That night, Huck sees Injun Joe and his partner making off with a box. He follows and overhears their plans to attack the Widow Douglas. By running to fetch help, Huck prevents the crime and becomes an anonymous hero. As Tom and Becky wander the extensive cave complex for the next few days, Becky gets extremely dehydrated and starved, so Tom's search for a way out gets even more determined. He accidentally encounters Injun Joe one day, but he is not seen by his nemesis. Eventually he finds a way out, and they are joyfully welcomed back by their community. As a preventive measure, Judge Thatcher has McDougal's Cave sealed off, but this traps Injun Joe inside. When Tom hears of the sealing several days later and directs a posse to the cave, they find Injun Joe's corpse just inside the sealed entrance, starved to death.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: 15 Illustrations Included (Unabridged Version), by Mark Twain

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-British actor Mike McShane provides a superb portrayal of Mark Twain's classic characters, nailing the Mississippi drawl and cadence. For those who know and love the story or are following along with an unabridged edition, however, this production is marred somewhat by what the publisher has chosen to leave out. The more descriptive chapters are shortened or expurgated entirely, which is understandable in the interest of editing for time. Some of the more distasteful racial epithets are gone as well, although Injun Joe retains his moniker. Sid and Mary are also cut entirely, as well as references to smoking, slavery, most of Tom's ludicrously funny romantic notions about the violence inflicted by pirates and robbers, and even the naked figure in the schoolmaster's anatomy book. The result is a watered down Tom and, especially, Huck. The ending also lacks the satisfaction of the original version. The party scene where the fortune is revealed has been cut as has Twain's concluding paragraphs which "endeth this chronicle." It lacks even the closure of the customary, "You have been listening to-." The sturdy plastic case will survive many circulations. If your facility serves an elementary-age population for which the language of the original would not be appropriate, or there is a teacher looking for a sanitized version, McShane's excellent performance makes this edition worth recommending.Diana Dickerson, White Pigeon Community Schools, MI Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Huckleberry Finn may be the greater book, but Tom Sawyer has always been more widely read. Moreover, it is a book that can be enjoyed equally by both children and adults. Twain, who called it a "hymn" to boyhood, would be thrilled that in narrator Patrick Fraley his hymn has found its most passionate voice. Many good unabridged readings of Tom Sawyer have already been recorded, but most are simply that: readings. Fraley's performance is something more; in attempting to bring each character to life, his enthusiasm for the material is so palpable that the mere sound of his voice commands attention. A can't-miss addition to all libraries, including those that have other Tom Sawyer programs. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gardner’s reading of Twain’s classic convinces us why certain titles remain in the pantheon of must-reads (and must-listens). Gardner’s resonant tones roll over the rich, extensive vocabulary, almost as if Twain himself were telling the story. He reads the varying country dialects in a natural manner, conveying Tom’s spunkiness and quick wit. He uses higher pitches for the female characters, imparting an innocent breathiness into Becky Thatcher’s dialogue and a solid, forthrightness into Aunt Polly’s. Although the nineteenth-century language and syntax may seem a bit arcane, the delightful audio enables kids to enjoy this compelling tale, which might seem daunting in book form. The cover art depicting Tom and a friend whitewashing the fence is appealing. Frank This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire. This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain. Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

Davis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Unabridged and IllustratedThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer that I bought from amazon.com is a paperback Piccadilly Classics (Unabridged and Illustrated) edition, written by Mark Twain (Samuel Langborne Clemens) and illustrated by T. Williams, and published by Piccadilly Books, Ltd. copyright 2010.I am VERY pleased with this edition's keeping to the Mark Twain's original manuscript and the use of (from my understanding...and by the looks of it) wonderfully-used original illustrations. I mean, really, the size of the book, typeface and insertion of the illustrations are artfully done and flow very nicely. The thing that makes me sick about this book, is that it is less than 1-month old and falling apart DURING my first reading of it. Such a fun, beautiful and timeless book deserves to be printed accordingly. A classic deserves a matching binding and cover quality that will withstand numerous generations of readers effortlessly.Specific problems I have had with my copy include: (1) The pages are bound together unevenly. I had a mind just to send the book back to amazon when I saw this flaw, because I knew they would right the problem immediately. My kids saw some of the illustrations and cover, however, and were so ready for me to read it NOW, that I kept it and decided it would just be an imperfect addition to our library. But more imperfections promptly presented themselves. (2) Because of the uneven binding job, the cover tore at the bottom where there are no pages to hold it up (the unevenly bound pages "slant" to full starting at the front cover back). (3) The cheaply-laminated cover has ALREADY started curling apart at both corners (front and back), and in the middle (front and back), where I hold the book to read it.This edition was unfortunately not available in hardcover. I would LOVE a hardcover, quality copy of this specific edition!

Only fools would suggest otherwise. Unfortunately, other fools have censored both books. This is an obscenity. Do these morons actually think that they need to protect the reading public from ideas that were the cultural norm 175 years ago? What unmitigated, insufferable, ignominious gall. Thankfully, Amazon can still provide us with the original versions of these brilliant books. The suggestion that reading Twain in his original prose somehow endangers the public good is both specious and ridiculous. So, then, if we read Lolita will we become pedophiles? If we read Pound will we become fascists? If we read Portnoy's Complaint will we masturbate constantly? The exquisite sensitivity of some groups within our society says more about their determined unwillingness to embrace the freedom and democracy they enjoy than anything else. To hell with them. Anyone looking for insight into the daily challenges of modern police work, and particularly NOPD, SHOULD READ HIS WORKS. I continue to be amazed at his grasp of every day police work, including the humor, difficulties and issues dealing with rank, the public and city administration. Can't wait for his next book!!
