By Brenda Frank Nate Swick gives you all the information you need to become a good birder. It’s also a good refresher for experienced birders, and even they might pick up useful tips. I did.Concise, intelligent, articulate, readable, practical, accurate and attractive are qualities that give “Birding for the Curious” five stars. Although Swick lives in North Carolina, his advice applies to the entire United States. In addition to excellent information in “Birding for the Curious,” the many watercolor illustrations by Robert Brandt added significantly to my reading pleasure.I am in the ranks of experienced birders, having purchased a Kowa spotting scope and Leica binoculars, having a sector in the Christmas Bird Count, having listed 1,128 birds on eBird, and having made several domestic and international trips primarily for birding. Yet I enjoyed reading Swick’s book and intend to share it with new birder friends. The birding calendar is a good summary of where to look and what to see during the changing seasons. Using eBird, as Swick suggests, there are good birds to find at all times, just in different places: mudflats, lakes, ponds, seashore, fields, forests, mountains, thickets, fields, landfills, and your own backyard. Here's a useful tip I picked up: Swick includes guidance on feeding birds, including a suet recipe. I have my own recipes from Wild Bird Magazine and routinely make suet. Swick suggests using empty commercial suet containers as molds for homemade suet. Since cutting the suet into square that fit the feeder is the most time-consuming part of making suet, I ordered 2 dozen commercial suet blocks to be fed to the birds and used as molds. Great idea!Swick’s last chapter, “Why Birds? A Redux,” is inspirational. Birders are watchers, record-keepers, observers and witnesses to changes in wild places to wild things. Birders become involved in changes to our environment and in the need for conservation. Those who love birds and birding must be concerned about their welfare. Species disappear every day. See what is outside while you can.

By Russell Fanelli I was delighted to order Birding for the Curious from the Vine Program because we feed the birds and pay close attention to them at our house, as well as the chipmunks and squirrels who also love good bird seed. The first thing our author Nate Swick asks us is "Why Birds?" He knows we will each have our own special answer and mine is that they are beautiful, wild, yet some, like chickadees, are eat out of your hand friendly. He makes a special point that people who watch birds are a bit like Sherlock Holmes; that is, they notice things that are completely lost to non-birdwatchers. For example, birds are individuals with their own character traits. The closer we look, the easier it is to identify and look for old friends. Some of these friends, the blue jays, will call to us from the tree in our back yard and expect us to come out with a handful of peanuts in the shells for them. Stand in the middle of the driveway, throw up a peanut, and a blue jay will swoop down and catch it in mid-air - circus time every day in our own back yard.An early point of interest for me in Nate's book was his question; do we prefer a photo or an illustration in our guidebooks? He prefers illustrations and he has filled his book with many of them. I like both. Some great photographers have taken amazing pictures of birds in the wild that are wonderful. Of course, artists like Audubon draw and paint fabulous pictures of birds. Why not have both?In Chapter 3 Nate talks to us about binoculars. We have many of them and they can get expensive, but most people interested in birds would not be without them. My best advice is the same as Nate's. Go to a sporting goods store and try them out. Talk to one of the experts in the store about the pluses and minuses attached to each pair. A big minus will be cost. They get pricey in a hurry, depending on the many features of even medium priced binoculars. BTW, go to a place like the Audubon Center in Wellfleet, MA, which is a great place to observe birds in their natural habitat and you will see a great many different types of binoculars and telescopes with various mounting devices to keep the telescopes perfectly still for viewing or picture taking. In Chapter 4 Nate helps us to identify what we see. People who watch birds often have a small library of books to help them identify various birds that are not common in the back yard. Nate includes many pictures of common variety birds and some not so common to give us a good start. Also, he gives us tips about bird habitats and behaviors that focus our attention and help us to see more clearly what is right before our eyes.Any reader of this review now has a good idea about what to expect with this delightful book intended for people curious about birds. It isn't just filled with useful information, the many illustrations are beautifully done and a pleasure to examine closely. Whether a person is just starting out, or has experience feeding and watching birds, Birding for the Curious is an excellent book to own and use.

By Tim Martin If you are curious about birding or new to birding, this is the book for you!It is completely jargon free and is a very welcoming guide to the world of birding. The author walks through the basics: how to find birds, what binoculars to buy, how to buy a field guide, where to find other birders, etc.The author starts off with the assumption that you are completely new to birding. The first chapter is "How To Look Like A Birder." By this he means how to notice the birds that are all around us. I really like how he approaches birding with an emphasize on the bird and its habitat and behavior. Identifying comes later in the process. From there the birding adventure is built upon with short chapters on the development into birderhood.I've been birding for my entire life and wish there was a bird book like this around when I started. If you are new to birding or are looking for a gift for a person just starting to be interested in birds, here you go!
