Set at a fictitious south Texas university, the novel is a romantic bildungsroman of Vincent, a bumbling Valley kid who is setting foot (for the first time) out of his comfort zone of his small town and into higher education. He joins a fraternity, angers the professors, is chased down by an old flame, and does what college kids do once they are on their own - mess up and learn the hard way. Will he learn from his mistakes or just learn to make more? Michael Verderber is a south Texas native who mainly specializes in experimental plays, disjointed poetry, nontraditional theatrical stagings, and other unconventional works He currently teaches at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. He spends his evenings rehearsing, directing, acting, and writing for his theatre company Zero Untitled. He has had two plays produced Off Broadway in New York City. Verderber’s award-winning plays, poetry, film scripts, and flash fiction have been published through various publishers. Sarah Book Publishing released Michael’s nine scene play T’was the Flop before Christmas in 2014, and is now proud to publish his novel, Still Standing Still.

An accurate and familiar portrayal of regional and college life in South Texas. The narrator overcomes a shallow view of the world as the story progresses and impresses upon the reader the need look at things from other's perspectives. He's fortunate to have other characters (and not just mentors) explain several lessons about life to him. Rarer than these lessons are proof that they are actually internalized by the learner, whose reflection helps impress their importance on the reader. His story isn't completely resolved at the end of the novel, and some of the more troubling characters remain static throughout. They do serve as foils for the narrator's growth and some folks just don't mature past casual or qualified prejudice.

An old woman's perspective By norma It has been a long time since my college days and another world but perhaps contains the same problems of searching for stability and self identification. Although the language and the subject is largely about sex, it did not center on the vulgarity that often results. The plot revolves around the main character as he gradually gains the maturity that lies on the edge of his conscience throughout the story. He is introspective but a bit dense at times. The author makes use of many similes that are unfamiliar to me and adds humorous imagery. I would probably recommend this book to the younger generation who may more closely relate to it, but it might also be recommended to those of us who care to understand any wayward generation. The book held my interest.
