However, the new edition is basically the same as the last edition as far as content goes. I think there are 2 extra cards. They are worth every penny, but if you're a student, might want to save some money and keep the 3rd edition. I have only gone through about 1/2 of the cards, so my review is based on that. If I find any other new info, I will update. The cards are now thicker, and have a glossy coating. This is good since they're more sturdy and resistant to stains. But it can make it hard if you like to write on them or highlight things you keep forgetting. Also, makes them seem more daunting since the set itself is about 1/3 thicker than the last edition, even though it has the same number of cards. Another nice addition is that it comes with a big ring and the cards are punched, so you can keep the cards together easier. The colors are also a bit different and Pathogenesis icons are now black and white ( I preferred the color icons).Overall, these are great cards for Step or course review. Depends on your learning style. I usually switch between FA and sketchy and use these when I want to change it up or do 10/day so I won't forget things when I'm studying other subjects. I was hoping the new edition would have updated content as far as treatment, or addition of more tips. I guess changing the paper and adding a glossy finish categorizes them as "new edition". This is a great resource and I appreciate the author and publisher for this, but at the same time, I don't like when they change the cover or minor words and call it a new edition... But I understand it's business :)

Each card is filled with descriptive pictures, colors, clinical vignettes, mechanism of action, treatments, and more. They summarize everything you need to know for micro on the COMLEX and USMLE. There really isn't a downfall to these cards. Not that it matters too much, but the cards are very smooth and easier to handle. Each one is relatively wide however. But the cards serve their purpose and helps CONSOLIDATE everything you need to know about every microbe for the boards.

I would recommend writing in brief notes as necessary, and updates as well (some cards as outdated), to make these even more useful, but they're great as is. I was able to go through all 154(?) cards a few days before my microbiology exam. No substitute for a textbook or First Aid (I suggest using these cards along with FA for review), but I was impressed by how much relevant information was on each card. They hit most of the key points for each pathogen.Overall, excellent.

Now, she’s the unemployed, pudgy, married, stay-at-home-mom of three kids under five, including twins.

As she slowly pieces together the mystery of how her dreams and aspirations could have disintegrated so completely in five short years, she finds herself utterly failing to manage this life she can’t imagine choosing. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Funny debut book about the unexpected consequences of motherhood By iiiireader What a funny and enjoyable debut book by Ms. Avanzino. “Wake-Up Call” is a humorous look at the effects of motherhood and life in the suburbs. Our heroine, Sarah Winslow wakes up one morning to a life that she doesn't recognize. The last she remembers, she was a high powered marketing rep with an eye on climbing the corporate ladder to wealth, fame, and success. She had the lifestyle that went along with it – long days of work and longs nights of party time. She was in the top of her physical condition and was looking forward to more of the same in the future. When she awakes after suffering a head injury, she discovers that five years have passed without her having any memory of them. She is now a stay-at-home mom who juggles cleaning with spending times with the kids and the kids usually win. The only female in a house full of male, she feels like an outcast. Her old friends have moved on and she looks down her nose a bit at the friends she seems to have made in the ensuing years. Sarah has to grapple with her old life goals and her new life reality. It is a very funny book and one that I, as a woman who also had three kids and has the body (and memories) to show for it, can identify with. Reading how Sarah is aghast at what has happened to her made me think of how my life changed in just about the same amount of time. I, at least, had two little girls in the mix to dress up and have fun with along with the cutest ever boy. Sarah has testosterone surrounding her on all sides. The way the kids act and how the adults react had me laughing out loud as I read through the book. I really enjoyed the story and recommend it to all mothers out there who wonder “how did I get here and where is my real life?” as well as everyone else who wants to have fun reading an enjoyable book.I received an Advanced Reader copy of this book from the publisher, Henery Press , via Netgalley.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. moving, insightful and inspirational story By Maryline -M's Bookshelf This review was first published at M's Bookshelf - http://mssbookshelf.blogspot.comFirst I have to mention the cover: I think it's absolutely brilliant in it's simplicity. The vibrant colours really make it 'pop' and I'm sure it wouldn't go unnoticed in a bookshop (online or otherwise). It set the tone for the rest of the novel as well. There aren't too many characters to get to know and the story line isn't that complicated: the focus is solely on Sarah's 'journey'... or 'struggle', more appropriately. This way you could really invest yourself in her story without being distracted by too many other things happening around the main story line.Amy Avanzino proves herself to be a very talented storyteller. Her main character goes through some 'ups and downs' (to put it lightly), and Amy's depiction of those 'downs', feels so real that Sarah's mood is almost contagious. This piece of brilliance is at the same time the one thing I didn't like about my reading experience: at the point where Sarah is truly unhappy and seems to be well on her way to mess everything up, I felt really down and it became harder to really enjoy reading. That being said, if - in the future - I'm ever lucky enough to be raising a family which is making me feel exhausted and maybe even a little hopeless, I think I'd love to come back to this book - which is not only an entertaining read but also a huge thumbs up and pat on the back to all moms.Wake-up Call is a truly moving, insightful and inspirational story and I'd love to read the rest of The Wake-Up Series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book with lots of heart By Kerrie What would you do if you woke up one morning and your life was not how you remembered it? That’s what happens to Sarah, she fell off a skateboard trying to do tricks with her son, and bumped her head. She can’t remember her life for the past five years. She doesn’t remember marrying her husband Kofi, and she doesn’t remember her kids, or anything else for that matter. It’s a hard change from the business woman she used to be, and she doesn’t know how she is going to manage her new role as mother and wife. Will she get her memory back? Will she begin to fall back in love with Kofi, and her children? Will she accept the “new me” that she has become? This book had me cracking up for most of it. Not only was the writing hilarious, but I know how it feels to be a mom who just can’t get it together. Sarah has some growing up to do, because she can’t remember anything, and it’s funny to watch her struggle (in a cute way) with her new life. I enjoyed this book. It was a light hearted read, with lots of love, hilarity, some sexiness and definitely a good time.Check out the original review on my blog: https://comfyreading.wordpress.com/2015/06/02/wake-up-call/

Orlon was the nicest, most friendly farmer on Dwarf Road. The perfect target for the likes of Ty the Parson who roamed about beginning quests here, quests there, quests everywhere, all in the name of saving the world from this evil threat or that. So it was Orlon learned his fate, or at least thought he had, late one night when Ty the Parson dropped by for a visit -- and so it was confirmed, or so he thought, when the Parson returned the next morning with a party of warriors in tow. Not even his best friend, Tarl Bimbo, who always fancied one day having a walkabout, could save him from taking a journey to who knew what end...

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great quest By Thomas W Blair Jr If you like fantasy adventure stories like the Hobbit, you will enjoy this book. An unlikely hero is called upon to save the world. Along the way he is joined by many diverse individuals. Each character seems to be larger than life. Add the characters to a perilous journey, full of mystery and magic, and comedic breaks and you have Tibtarnitallimardarian. A fun read indeed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Giving Tim credit By bolo4stars This is a clever read indeed. The adventures of Orlon and Tarl clip along at a fairly fast pace, which is something I look for in a good read. The first review already gave a short symposis of the book, so there is no reason to repeat that. I was hooked into reading this book as soon as I read just a portion of the Introduction. The author's journey in finally writing this book was no small feat. As a matter-of-fact, his life experiences as explained in the Introduction should be made into a novel. I found myself wanting to know more about the author; how he was able to pick up the pieces and move on with his life. Such a story, I think, would be an inspiration to others who have found their own lives truncated by some irresponsible person or by the unpredictable fate in life that stole their dreams from them. The author's writing style is incredibly smooth. Punctuation and sentence structure seem to be correct as is the spelling and use of words. I mention this because now-a-days with Amazon publishing just about anything, I see a lot of "errors" in grammar, quotations, etc. This is a book I plan to use as my personal guide to writing. Tim gives some credit for his own writing ability to Rober E Howard and Lester Dent; I would give my writing credit to Timothy Ray Jones. He has learned his lessons well, but is probably a natural writer in his own right. He tells a story like an artist. For example: every description of a charater is thorough and within a few words the reader knows exactly what happened, how it happened, who it happened to and what to expect next. The characters stay true to form and the reader has a good idea how each character may react in that given situation. The story events are orderly and easily remembered. I truly enjoy this author's ability to make a story fun and enjoyable.

“Oh, don’t judge me, people. We all do it.   “Don’t try to tell me that you’ve never checked that weird mole on your thigh on WebMD. Or how to fold meringue on Epicurious. And, there’s no way that I’m the only one who clears her search history after looking up how to give a great bl— (Um, that last one’s not important.)”   When newspaper reporter Avery Fowler discovers her husband is having an affair, the online help site HowTo.com is where she turns to navigate this challenging stage of her life.   If the Internet is Avery’s information god, then HowTo.com is her Holy Grail. Its live chat option is like having a virtual life coach for the low, low price of $14.95 a month:   “When I joined HowTo.com, it assigned me ‘Clementine’ as my advisor, based on my choice of ‘British female’ in the Preferences panel. That way, I can pretend that a Maggie Smith or Judi Dench type supplies the wisdom, tinged with a sassy touch of malt vinegar. (In reality, it’s most likely a bored, seventeen-year-old boy labouring in a New Delhi call centre.)”  Add into the mix a new boss, Victoria, whose managerial style calls to mind the Wicked Bitch of the West—or the Anti-Christ—and the poor girl needs all the help she can get! The stakes rise and hilarity ensues as our heroine struggles to take control of her personal life and topple her boss after she learns Victoria’s guilty secret.   With Clementine (virtually) in tow, our heroine tackles such tricky questions as dating after divorce, sex once nothing points north anymore, and how to cover attempted murder scenes (despite a paralyzing fear of blood) as the new and improved Avery Fowler 2.0.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love Avery Fowler. That is all. By Bookaholic Holly Originally reviewed for http://www.bookaholicconfessions.wordpress.comThings aren't going great for reporter Avery Fowler. Her husband has been having an affair and ups and leaves her for another woman, breaking the news at a Sushi restaurant, and then she meets her terrifying new boss, Victoria, who makes Hitler look like a softie.Struggling in her personal and professional life, Avery is relieved to have at least one ally in the form of Clementine, her very own advisor/life coach/confidant. For a monthly subscription to HowTo.com, Clementine is on hand 24/7 to help Avery out with life's tricky problems, such as `How do I get cabernet out of a white carpet?', `How can I impress my boss?', and `Is twelve cups of coffee a day too many?'Dear Internet: It's Me, Avery follows the ups and downs of Avery's slightly crazy home/work/love life. Then as things start to continue on a downward spiral, Avery decides that it's time of unleash something special...Avery Fowler 2.0. The new and improved Avery goes jogging and isn't afraid of a hard day's work...But the question is, can this brand new Avery follow her heart?I was drawn to Dear Internet: It's Me, Avery from the moment I spotted it. I loved the premise for the story; most of us would be lying if we said that we could now survive without the internet and the idea of having your own personal advisor who you can call upon any time, day or night, with those tricky questions (`How long can I live on mac & cheese?') is rather amazing. However, you've then got the issue of becoming over-reliant on the World Wide Web and it takes one crisis too many for Avery to see that the only advice she needs to follow doesn't come from Clementine, but from herself. Before we go any further I must confess my love for Avery Fowler. Jennifer Ammoscato has created one heck of a fabulous heroine in Avery that every reader will be able to relate to in some shape or form. She's just your average (slightly disaster prone) woman, trying to navigate the choppy seas of work and romance. I can't imagine anyone not loving Avery. Self deprecating, funny, loyal, witty and with a slight tendency to day dream, she is your ideal chick-lit heroine who I guarantee you'll be rooting for. I badly wanted everything to turn out right for Avery, despite her being involved in crisis after crisis. I just wanted a nice man to take her in his arms and tell her he loved her. Not that I'm some soppy old romantic (*cough*), but this girl deserved it! Avery is definitely up there is my list of favourite fictional characters. In fact I'd place her somewhere near the top (amongst Bridget Jones and Becky Bloomwood). There's a range of fantastic characters throughout the novel. I loved Andy, despite his infuriating tendencies (and occasional smugness) I had the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye and couldn't wait to find out if my instincts were right. I also loved Avery's friends and work colleagues Becca and Harrison. They formed a friendship group that I would love to be a part of...You will have no trouble hating Victoria, I can assure you. Jennifer Ammoscato has created a wonderfully bitchy villain who will have you seething with her cruel jibes and behaviour. You will need to keep reading this novel to ensure she gets her comeuppance...There wasn't a single thing that I didn't love about Dear Internet: It's Me, Avery. Jennifer's style of writing is wonderful; she sneaks in some hilarious one liners and scenarios that will have you sniggering. The fact that some of the things that happen are realistic as well as extremely funny make it all the better. (Ok, they're maybe not ALL one hundred per cent realistic but they are certainly one hundred percent funny.) I adored the way her sense of humour was translated onto the page and her writing had me flicking through the pages on my kindle, desperate to see what was going to happen to Avery and co.If you're feeling low or down about life then I urge you to pick up this book. It's the best medicine you could find. A fabulous mix of romance and humour I guarantee that this novel will brighten anyone's day. It's also one of those stories that you can't help but gobble up all at once if time allows. So set aside an `Avery Day' and be prepared to laugh your stilettos off.

By Alex Jones I’ve just had the opportunity to read "Dear Internet: It’s Me, Avery", the debut novel from Jennifer Ammoscato. Although described by the author as Chiklit, I can assure you that this author’s style of light, intelligent, humour can be enjoyed by both men and women alike. The main character, Avery Fowler, is an intelligent, yet klutzy, young woman who is languishing on the Entertainment desk of small market daily newspaper. It’s hardly the type of journalism Avery envisioned in her future. Avery’s major character flaw is that she is almost devoid of self-confidence. As a result, she has become dependent on Clementine, a modern-day British internet version of Dear Abbey. Clem, as Avery affectionately refers to her, gives advice on everything from relationships, fashion, and cleaning tips, to how to get rid of Avery’s narcissistic, domineering new female editor-in-chief, Victoria Van Horne.Avery’s struggles to find her self-confidence, to recover from discovering that her husband has been cheating, and to become a legitimate journalist, are cleverly woven together with just the right amount of wit, cynicism, and social comment on current issues to make this book thoroughly entertaining. Dear Internet: It’s Me, Avery is ideal for reading on your phone or tablet, whether you’re commuting to work, taking a break, on vacation, or winding down at the end of the day. I’m already hoping that Avery Fowler’s next entertaining adventure will be ready for my iPad in time for my next vacation.

Because putting down Dear Internet: It’s Me, Avery is simply not an option.Smart, funny, sassy, snarky and at times irreverent, Avery Fowler is the best friend we all want (or is that just me, dear reader?).With her life turning into a cliché… cheating husband (they always go for the younger blonde, don’t they?)… the new boss-from-hell who, if she were a cartoon, would have a balloon over her head that reads “I drown kittens and knit their skins into placemats for my dinner parties.”… a career headed in the wrong direction… Avery does the only thing a girl can do. She gets a life coach. But where does one find a life coach that is a good match for one with Avery’s unique personality (read "quirks and foibles")? The Yellow Pages? Recommendation from a friend? Noooooo….!Avery turns to the Internet because, well… because the Internet can fix anything, right? I mean, if it’s on the Internet…. right?Enter Clementine, Avery’s ‘life advisor’ from HowTo.Com. Clementine soon becomes, unwittingly, Avery’s partner-in-crime as Avery takes (read "ignores") much of Clementine’s advice and sets out to ‘fix’ things in her life and when things go from bad to worse…Well, I can’t say more… that would be a spoiler.I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard! I already have a reputation on the train as that crazy lady who laughs out loud for seemingly no reason and Dear Internet: It’s Me, Avery had me laughing with each page turn.Jen Lancaster and Sophie Kinsella… move over because there’s a new funny lady on the block. Her name is Jennifer Ammoscato and she is bringing it ‘live and unplugged’! Jennifer brings her characters to life with a verve and wit that you just don't see a lot of in today's rom/com - chick-lit. They are sharply drawn and all-too human, a reflection of people some of us know all too well. The dialogue is unforced and spot-on and flows seamlessly with the story. Jennifer gets high marks indeed for her skills as a storyteller.Hmmm… I have a sudden craving for a chocolate chip muffin. Darn you, Avery! You're gonna make me fat!Dear Internet: It’s Me, Avery: Avery Fowler 2.0 Series, Book 1 is a ‘can’t-put-down’ must-read that I can’t recommend highly enough. You’ll want to be careful reading it on the bus or train though, lest you miss your stop (oh, surely I am not the only person that has ever happened to. Don’t judge me, blame Avery… err, I mean Jennifer. *wink*).“I LOVE you, Avery Fowler!”Veronica Marie Lewis-Shaw9 November 2015(Writing under a large mushroom somewhere in the Pacific Northwest)

"For the inconsistencies in the book, and I am aware that there are not a few, I must ask the indulgence of the reader. The blame, however, lies chiefly with the Erewhonians themselves, for they were really a very difficult people to understand." (Preface) Erewhon: or, Over the Range is a novel by Samuel Butler, published in 1872. The title is also the name of a country, supposedly discovered by the protagonist. It is not revealed where Erewhon is, but it is clear that it is a fictional country. Butler meant the title to be read as the word Nowhere backwards, even though the letters "h" and "w" are transposed, therefore Erewhon is an anagram of nowhere. The book is a satire on Victorian society. In the sequel, Erewhon Revisited Twenty Years Later, the Original Discoverer of the Country and His Son returns.

Lunde I must say, when I picked up 'Erewhon' at the public library two and a half months ago, I thought 'hmm, I vaguely recall this title' and 'Well, I laughed out loud at some parts of Butler's translation of 'The Iliad.' Should be a great read!'To be fair, Butler's own 1901 preface to the combined edition apologizes for his youthful errors. I don't know what age he was when he translated Homer, but he must have been much older, and much more confident. His prose creaks with the layers of dried horse-glue that he's applied in polishing his extensive sentences. He is trying to satirize 19th Cent. English churchmen, Oxbridge dons and so forth, which is interesting academically, but... rather dry. Dry, dry, dry!I did jot down one quote, which deals with the tendency of people to more jealously guard their purses than their ideas (or something like that) which made me smile. But that's one in 300 pages. This work smells of youth. It's overthought and under-felt. Not one of the characters (including the narrator) inspires even a moment's empathy. And I'm a guy who cried at the 'Lavender blue, dilly-dilly' passage in 'London' a few years back. It doesn't take much to touch my outwardly stern, inwardly caramel-coated Norwegian-American psyche!I agree with the other reviewer who said other 'dystopian' works have been done better. I might add, Orwell gets more laughs.Does he get away with Arowhena? Yes, because he tells us several times through the work that he does. (Yawn.) How does he escape Erewhon? Who cares? I'll never find out, I stopped after 280 pages.Back to the joys of Homer for me.

I suppose I'm an idiot By Jack Purcell I've tried several times to read and enjoy this piece of fantasy freshman English types have been forced to drudge through for the last century. I've never succeeded. I tried it as a young man, forced to write papers on it and hated it. I've tried it as a horrid old codger, discovering tome by tome that books I once found awful have now grown merit and become a source of joy. Not so with this one.Likely as not Erewhon was imaginative when it was written. Today it's been superceded by thousands of better reads with the same theme. There's nothing here that won't be found more interestingly expressed on any library or bookstore shelf in America.

Charity Mupanga is the widowed owner of Harrods International Bar (and Nightspot), a favourite meeting place for the movers and shakers of Kibera. While she can handle most challenges, from an erratic supply of Worcestershire sauce, the secret ingredient in her cooking, to the political tensions in East Africa's most notorious slum and a cholera outbreak that follows the freak floods in the state of Ubuntu, some threatening letters from London lawyers are beginning to overwhelm her. Well-meant but inept efforts to foil the lawyers by Edward Furniver, a former fund manager who runs Kibera's co-operative bank and who seeks Charity's hand in marriage, bring Harrods International Bar to the brink of disaster, and Charity close to despair. In the nick of time an accidental riot, triggered by the visit to the slum of World Bank President Hardwick Hardwicke, coupled with some quick thinking by Titus Ntoto, the 14-year-old leader of Kibera's toughest gang, the Mboya Boys United Football Club, help Charity - and Harrods - to triumph in the end.

About the Author Michael Holman grew up in Zimbabwe and was educated in Africa and England. After university he was forced to flee Zimbabwe for Zambia, where he lived for many years. He was Africa Editor of the FINANCIAL TIMES from 1984-2002, and is now a writer and journalist based in London.

From AudioFile African drumbeats leave you in no doubt of the setting. THIS Harrods is a bar-restaurant in a mythical East-African country; THAT Harrods threatens to sue over the name. Owner Charity is determined that her business will survive. What follows is a fictional stew of the continent's ongoing problems--disease, corruption, violence--treated somewhat tongue in cheek. Jerome Pride gets the satiric tone just right as he mines the treasure trove of characters--officious visiting Brits, resident Japanese, local government leaders, and juvenile gang members. Early on, Charity's father explains, in an infectious lilt, that he got the name "Harrods" from a discarded shopping bag because Brit employers couldn't pronounce local monikers. Narrator Jerome Pride has no trouble, though. An edgy but delightful listen. J.B.G. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A satire, and life in Africa By Wolf Roder Holman certainly knows Africa and knows it well. He understands the constant to-ing and fro-ing of the self-important international aid and NGO fraternity, the fancy hotels they stay in and the world-important conferences on which much foreign aid money is spent. Holman also knows the life in the African urban townships, which westerners regard as slums. Life is difficult for all, so is the survival of children in these slums, but most of all for the AIDS orphans. You will smile and laugh out loud as the widowed owner of Harrod's Bar and Nightspot, built from three steel shipping containers bests the representatives of Harrods Department Store in London, and makes monkeys of their lawyers. I recommend this book for its satire, and good description of African life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not Evelyn Waugh, but worth a read for Africa fans By O. Corlett This is a tale about the failure of post-colonial Africa, set in a country that feels very like Kenya and a city that feels very like Nairobi. The author clearly has strong feelings about his subject, and a very canny knowledge of how politics works in this setting. His portrait of the fictional President Josiah Nduka is particularly eye-opening, even a little chilling, and turns on its head the usual Developed-World image of a typical greedy, rather dim-witted, bumbling African politician. Similarly, he describes a world of journalists and international aid workers quite at odds with the usual impression left on those of us who watch this world vaguely and from afar. These people know what they're doing. They know they live in a corrupt world (don't we all?). The result is a very dysfunctional system -- but a compromise that is better than nothing... maybe. As a work of fiction and a satire, it's not the most compelling thing, nor the funniest. The point of view shifts among too many characters for the novel to have a central focus, and the storyline is lacking in real suspense or surprise. The author is obviously too nice a man to make a first-class satirist (which requires a generous portion of cruelty and heartlessness), and the blurb on the back cover comparing him to Evelyn Waugh rather overstates the case.Still, it has its moments. There are too few books on this subject, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the knotty problems of African development.

Satire about Africa Audio cd 8 cds unabridged By Barbara Lane Anyone interested in International Aid will see the funny side to this satire to what happens to the money that gets sent in and who oftens pockets a lot of it. How the newspaper reports the meetings and how the reports are so twisted to protect everyone involved. (Or the reporter could end up in jail)International Aid is a very serious thing and very necessary but so often it doesn't fully end up where it should. This story is told with tongue in cheek humour.Part of the story is about how the children survive in the slums and how they try and earn a small living just to buy food.Interesting Story.

If you are a morani (warrior), you have your spear at the ready—you could be the hero, but you will have to wait until the morning light before you can go out and prove yourself. If it is a lion, you want to be the first to spear it—and if the lion turns on you, make sure it mauls you on your chest or stomach, on your face, shins, or throat. Any place where you can show your scars with pride, show the incontrovertible evidence of courage. A scar on your back would be a permanent reminder of cowardice, an ineradicable trace of shame.   Monsters take many forms: from man-eating lions to the people who hunt them, from armed robbers to that midnight knock at the door of a cheap hotel room in Dar es Salaam. And celebrated biologist Craig Packer has faced them all. Head on. With Lions in the Balance, Packer takes us back into the complex, tooth-and-claw world of the African lion, offering revealing insights into both the lives of one of the most iconic and dangerous animals on earth and the very real risks of protecting them. A sequel to his prize-winning Into Africa—which gave many readers their first experience of fieldwork in Africa, of cooperative lions on dusty savannas, and political kidnappings on the shores of Lake Tanganyika—this new diary-based chronicle of cutting-edge research and heartbreaking corruption will both alarm and entertain. Packer’s story offers a look into the future of the lion, one in which the politics of conservation will require survival strategies far more creative and powerful than those practiced anywhere in the world today. Packer is sure to infuriate millionaires, politicians, aid agencies, and conservationists alike as he minces no words about the problems he encounters. But with a narrative stretching from far flung parts of Africa to the corridors of power in Washington, DC, and marked by Packer’s signature humor and incredible candor, Lions in the Balance is a tale of courage against impossible odds, a masterly blend of science, adventure, and storytelling, and an urgent call to action that will captivate a new generation of readers.

Lions in the Balance: Man-Eaters, Manes, and Men with Guns, by Craig Packer

Review “Packer duly sets out to change the system, a lone maverick of sober-minded regulatory reform. . . . Lions in the Balance is itself a story about a loss of faith, and Packer’s anti-romanticism is such that there is no ameliorative lesson to take from his exhausting, decades-long quest to reform a practice that will not be reformed. Hunters will not self-regulate; Tanzania’s bureaucracy will not be tamed. Cattle ranchers will continue to kill lions and destroy habitats. . . . It’s bracing, reading the end of Packer’s text, to watch him wrestle with his own impotence. Exhausted, he sobs in front of his son, afraid for his own safety and that of his family. The Tanzanian government eventually forces him to abandon the Serengeti. In his quest to restructure incentives, in his willingness to take the long view, in his commitment to numbers over narrative, Packer deems himself ‘ultimately alone.’ As it seems he is.” (Kerry Howley New Yorker)“Lions in the Balance mixes episodes of spy novel intrigue with detailed descriptions of scientific studies and PowerPoint presentations.” (Erica Goode New York Times)“Packer is an honest man embroiled in very murky circumstances. He is in the lonely position of one whose honesty alienates even his supporters. He came under pressure from conservationists not to publicise the figures for man-eating, on the grounds that it would reduce support for lion conservation, and from the hunting lobby not to publicise his finding that most ‘trophy’ lions were immature males—shot for the fee and because the ‘hunters’ were too ignorant to know that what they got was little more than an adolescent cub. His lonely position gives his story the quality of a nightmare. . . . The future for lions does not look bright. . . . Nowadays, surely not even a Minnesotan dentist, brandishing his crossbow, would slay an imbecilic lion.” (Patrick Scrivenor Literary Review)“As he exposes corruption in Tanzania’s hunting industry and tries to get his plan adopted, diary entries show Packer and his colleagues taking on locals, hunters and megalomaniac politicians in a struggle to balance human needs, a lucrative hunting trade and true Serengeti science. His brave accounts of blackmail and death threats are alarming. . . . The book makes compelling reading as we journey through pioneering science, dodging the influential government fat cats on the way. Packer is completely candid about the ‘ethics’ of those instrumental in the future of the King of the Beasts. Let’s hope someone will listen.” (Iris Barbier New Scientist)“Packer returns more than a decade after his memoir, Into Africa, with a fast-paced, unsentimental sequel about the kings of the savannah and the politics of protecting them.” (Discover)“This candid volume is sure to divide opinion but it is far more than a chronicle of Packer’s campaigns. There are also dozens of surprising facts about the book’s heroes—the lions—and measured commentary on a host of complex issues: the way Tanzanian rural populations think of the wild creatures in their midst, the pros and cons of fencing in wilderness areas, and a sustained effort to recognize the ‘contrast between romantic fantasies and harsh realities.’ . . . Goodness, the book will make you think.” (Jon Wright Geographical)“Both timely and thrilling, this exposé/memoir details the complexity (and moral ambiguity) of trophy-hunting. . . . Zigzagging through Tanzania, Kenya, and Mozambique, Packer takes us to backroom meetings at the Tanzania Wildlife Division’s Ivory Room, gala dinners given by foreign hunting organizations, and out in the field to track lions. . . . What makes this book so engaging is the writing. Lions in the Balance is far from a dry dissertation; at times, it reads like a political thriller. . . . Packer has written a fascinating book exploring some controversial and emotional subjects. . . . Readers will come away from Lions in the Balance with a better understanding of the benefits and consequences of trophy hunting, as well as who wants lions, who doesn’t, and why.” (Christine Baleshta Washington Independent Review of Books)“In this era of self-censorship, the honesty and detail of his account are rare. Packer documents murder, all manner of corruption and just plain laziness in this account of the decline of African wildlife populations, naming names. Packer and his graduate student colleagues deserve our thanks for displaying the courage to endure the dangers of field research, for risking reprisals for investigating the manipulations of government officials, and for reporting the facts contained in this memoir. So does the University of Chicago Press for publishing them.” (Winthrop R. Staples III Biological Conservation)“Herein lies the story of Craig Packer's struggle to save lions in the wild. We learn the names and personalities of politicians and decision makers on the international stage and in Tanzania. We gain insights about the hunting industry, especially officials in the Wildlife Division, which oversees hunting in Tanzania, about Safari Club International, about corruption in Tanzania, and about the author himself. There is a lot of science here, too, concerning the function of lion manes, how field experiments are conducted, and why lions become man-eaters. The book is engaging, candid, and thought provoking but in the end an essay in failure. Readers will differ enormously in whom to blame for this conservation debacle—but this will, for some, make the book a page-turner!” (Tim Caro, University of California, Davis Trends in Ecology & Evolution)“Ranges swiftly across accounts of Packer’s experiences in the bush, scientific experimentation and research on location, tribal mores, and much more.” (Chronicles)“A fast-paced, detailed inside look at the politics of lion conservation, the often corrupt big-game hunting fraternity, and Tanzanian government.” (Library Journal)“Packer’s efforts at policy and management have changed the course of his science—and his life—in ways that remain for readers  to discover. . . . Packer’s account reveals a strong personality. I am sure that many of the subjects of his stories would appreciate a chance to tell their versions of events. But readers of this book will have a front-row seat on the real, messy, and merciless business of conservation, and I doubt anyone who finishes the book will ever think of African savannas as quite so pristine again.” (BioScience)“A book for those interested in the politics of lion hunting. . . . Recommended.” (L. T. Spencer, Plymouth State University Choice)“The King of Beasts is in trouble throughout Africa as this hard-headed, clear-eyed book makes unmistakable. Explosive human population growth in the lion’s habitat, conversion of wild lands into fields, corrupt government officials, unscrupulous overharvest by trophy hunters, illegal killing with gun, poison, and spear, lion bones smuggled to Asia—the litany of woe goes on and on. Craig Packer and his coworkers studied lions in the Serengeti region and other parts of Tanzania, adding immeasurably to our knowledge of this magnificent cat. But they also took on the moral task of protecting lions and helping them endure. This stirring book, written with candor and wry humor, should be read by everyone interested in wildlife, as well as concerned about the impact of politics on conservation and the future of our natural treasures.” (George B. Schaller, Panthera and Wildlife Conservation Society author of "The Serengeti Lion: A Study of Predator-Prey Relations")“There is only one Craig Packer; he ploughs his own furrow. Packer’s work on lions and the Serengeti ecosystem . . . and his confrontations with officialdom will be familiar to most who have worked with (or read of) wildlife and conservation in Africa, but the Savannas Forever program was uniquely ambitious. Packer tells its story with unusual candor, laying out the facts, pulling no punches, revealing the corruption he observed in his dealings with the hunting fraternity in Tanzania—both among the operators themselves, and at all levels of government. Specific incidences are cited; the names of those involved are given. . . . The writing is highly commendable (even enviable!), the science and personal experience episodes beautifully done. I know of no other book like Lions in the Balance.” (John Reader author of "Africa: A Biography of the Continent")

About the Author Craig Packer is professor of ecology, evolution, and behavior and director of the Lion Research Center at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of Into Africa, also published by the University of Chicago Press. He lives in Minneapolis, MN.

I found this book very informational, educational, and shocking as I read of the ongoing slaughter of lions throughout the continent, whether it be by poachers, trophy hunters, "warriors" proving their manhood, or farmers in retaliation for killed livestock. Whether the reason for the killing is a result of greed, ego, corruption, self-preservation, or out of ignorance and fear, the prognosis is the same and quite grim - wild lions, sooner than you think, may no longer walk the earth. The human race needs to wake up and take action before it's too late. How sad that we are already at the point of seeing what may very well be the last lions. If the killing doesn't finish them off, then the loss of habitat they are experiencing surely will. Man has had the starring role in this tragedy...

A gripping blow-by-blow record of Professor Packer's efforts to protect the lions in Africa, this book shows the barriers of greed and corruption that face conservation efforts in Tanzania and other African countries. Packer has devoted three decades of his life and career to preserve the lion-sometimes at a risk to his very life.

Nobody has a probably known lions more closely than Craig packer. He deserves to be heard, and the format part travelogue part diary part musings works to make it a lively and enthralling read.
