"The Green Overcoat" is and pretends to be nothing but a piece of amusing foolery. But when a Belloc and a Chesterton collaborate in nonsense, something is "bound to drop." Mr. Chesterton, to be sure, appears here only in the new ro1e of illustrator, but he does a very good job. His drawings belong to no recognizable school or manner, and we are grateful for this as well as for the fact that they actually illustrate the text—a thing which professional illustrators seldom stoop to. He must have had almost as much fun doing the pictures as Mr. Belloc had spinning the yarn. It is a blithe fantasy, in which, thank Heaven, there is not a word of sense. A number of ridiculous things happen to a number of ridiculous persons, and Mr. Belloc conveys them to us with the careless gusto of an after-dinner intimate. It all begins with the purloining by a Professor of Psychology of a magnificent green overcoat belonging to a rich retired merchant. It is the kind of overcoat which brings misfortune to all illegal possessors, and only blesses the original owner. The Professor is pretty roughly handled by fate, becomes a forger and an impostor, and is saved from public exposure and disgrace only by an ingenious turn of chance which makes silence very much to the interest of the overcoat's rightful owner. The Professor is left by the adventure the reputed possessor of a considerable fortune, and a revered authority on psychic phenomena. I love Mr. Belloc's blithe and casual conclusion. Summing up with a row of "hows," he concludes: "...How Professor Higginson was compelled for many years to review the wildest books about spooks, and to lecture till he was thin as a rail (often for nothing) upon the same subject—all these things you will have to read in some other book, which I most certainly do not mean to write, and which I do not think anybody else will write for you.... How Guelph University looked when it found there was no Ten Thousand Pounds at all after Professor Higginson's death none of us know, for the old idiot is not yet dead. How they will look does not matter in the least, for the whole boiling of them are only people in a story, and there is an end of them." —The Independent, Volume 109 [1922]

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Corzine Second only to the introduction to "Path to Rome" which may be the best introduction in all of English letters (it is titled "In Praise of This Book"), I would place the dedication to Green Overcoat. Anyone who could take the book seriously after that deserves to be disappointed. Belloc parodies not just the detective novel but a whole cast of contemporary personalities. The internal reasonings of the professor are spot on and hilarious. The wealthy industrialist is the victim of a crime instead of its perpetrator but, in classic Belloc form, manages to be the villain of the piece anyway.

This is intended as a satirical pastiche of a number of different detective/mystery writers from the early part of the century. I don't care for that genre. There, I've said it--just shut the door on the whole lot. I suppose if you like this sort of thing, you might find it amusing. Oh, and there are funny pictures by G. K. Chesterton. Okay, maybe this book is a bit of a lark, after all. I'm still shutting the door, though.

Ebenezer Scrooge: Ghost Hunter expands the original text of Charles Dicken’s classic with all-new scenes of malicious ghosts, soul devouring wraiths, deadly doppelgangers and other terrors from the netherworld. Our story opens seven years after Marley’s violent death. Ebenezer Scrooge has given up ghost hunting and embraced an inevitable slow death by alcohol poisoning. When the spectre of his deceased partner appears to him on Christmas Eve, Scrooge learns that he must face three Ghosts – one who will try to help him, one who will try to harm him and one that cannot be killed. In a story that spans a lifetime of torment, Scrooge must face the demons of his past and his failures in the present in order to prevent the horror that is his future. The stakes for Scrooge’s soul have never been higher than in this wicked retelling of the classic, A Christmas Carol.

Ebenezer Scrooge: Ghost Hunter, by Jaqueline Kyle, Charles Dickens

Review I was interested in what appeared to be a completely new take on the Dickens classic. It surpassed my expectations. Ms Kyle ... did a fantastic job of interweaving whole new dimensions into the characters of the original. She integrates a complete new storyline so flawlessly that early on I contemplated getting out my copy of the original to compare. I could not be sure where Dickens' prose ended and Kyles' began. She kept the tone, flow, and language of the story beautifully. The characters came alive in new ways. To me, Scrooge became a more sympathetic person in this telling. I own several different video version of A Christmas Carol and/or Scrooge, and as any fan of the story knows, each have little differences that make their version unique without altering the fundamental story. Jaqeuline Kyle wove many of these little details into her version (I assume on purpose) which I found pleasing. It tells me she was dedicated to using the whole "legend" of Scrooge to craft her story. -- Mike Siedschlag

About the Author Jaqueline Kyle once stood on top of an active nuclear reactor. It glowed. She dove the Great Barrier Reef and the fish swarmed to check HER out. On her 16th birthday she flew a plane solo - just to enjoy the view. She once ran a marathon - because it was faster than walking. When she bungee jumps, she always goes first, so her friends can jump off the bridge after her. Jaqueline Kyle is not the most interesting man in the world - because she's a woman.Charles Dickens lived from 1812 to 1870 and originally wrote A Christmas Carol as a political pamphlet to bring attention to the plight of childhood ignorance and the cycle of poverty. Also, Dickens loved coffee so much that they still put his picture on coffee mugs. True Fact.

A new take on an old tale By Charline Ratcliff, Author One might think that Dickens’ classic tale featuring the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future could not be rewritten further; especially with the addition of movies like Scrooged and The Muppet Christmas Carol. One would be wrong though, because Jaqueline Kyle has taken this timeless story and brought it into the 21st century by adding a seemingly never-before-used plot twist. What if Scrooge and his partner, Jacob Marley, were in fact actual ghost hunters? What if, in trying to rid the world of ethereal and oftentimes evil beings, they themselves became so caught up in the ‘hunt’ that they forgot to live the lives they were originally intended to? How does fate resolve that? One could argue and say that Scrooge had no excuse to become such a loveless person – after all, Jacob Marley had been dead for seven long years...Ah, but what if Scrooge's heart wasn’t filled with monetary greed? What if it was actually filled with bitterness and cynicism over knowing the truth of what the world really is? And an understanding of why his partner really died? How then does fate deal with this aspect? How does destiny alter a man's life choices – when the reality of those actions are based wholly upon irrefutable facts? Why, you send in the unhappy ghost of his partner followed by the three infamous Christmas spirits, of course! With that shared, you'll need to read Ebenezer Scrooge: Ghost Hunter for yourself to see how it all plays out.In summary though, Ebenezer Scrooge: Ghost Hunter was a well-written and fast-paced read with a quirky plot probably not envisioned by Dickens when he originally penned this tale. A fun story; and if you enjoy the paranormal and/or spooky ghost stories than Ebenezer Scrooge: Ghost Hunter is not to be missed.

But as she can attest to, that doesn't mean I'll cut her any slack when it comes to writing. Like most people, I know the tale of A Christmas Carol (the Disney version is my favorite) but I can't say for certain if I've ever read Dickens' novel. I found the style of writing challenging to follow at first but the fact that it didn't become "easier" in parts meant that Jaqueline matched Dickens style, tone, and prose exceptionally well. I'm not much of a fan of gore, but by the time I got to the chapter about the third ghost, I couldn't put the book down. The re-telling of this tale was imaginative, detailed, and incredibly well-written. I'm very proud of her and look forward to reading whatever she writes next.

Miller, fresh from too many pampered years at university, has managed to lose a PhD, a girlfriend, and her father’s car. With parents now committed to a regime of find-your-own-way tough love, he’s fallen off the fast track to success, and finds himself working in a shabby garden centre on the edge of nowhere. The staff are a collection of dropouts and oddballs, the boss is very shady, and Miller’s not sure half the stuff they sell is legal. Still, he’s learning to get on with things and make do, finding a brand new path through life, but... an alien invasion disguised as a bright and shiny big-box store from out of town? That really isn’t helping. If Miller wants to protect his job and save the world, he’s going to have to dig deep and get his hands dirty.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Creepy, twisted and hilarious By Jennifer R. Ganoung Creep, funny, dark, scary, hilarious and sometimes ridiculous--this book is a twisted tale full of humor that zigs and zags into unexpected places. Every time you think you've got it figured out it rounds another corner and there's something you never even saw coming. Miller and his eclectic collection of co-workers spend their days (and nights) at a rundown garden centre with a dwindling selection of customers but a growing business black market creepy crawlies. When a big box garden centre loves in nearby (with some seriously creepy staff and plasticky owners) they know have to check it out. But a covert op goes sideways, leaving Miller and his cohorts running for their lives. In case you can't tell, I LOVED THIS BOOK in all its twisty-turns, unexpected glory. The writing is beautiful, the characters odd, and funny, bumblingly inept at times, channeling strong strains of MacGyverism at others. Buy this, read it IMMEDIATELY (probably with the lights on, there are spiders, after all) and I guarantee you won't regret it.
