Disc jockey Edward Allan Twain has some crazy ideas. He believes he can restore justice, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to a world ruled by corruption, prohibition and greed. This crusade destroys his radio career in the U.S. and leaves him scraping by at a tiny border station in Juárez, where he discovers that criticizing the drug cartels can cost him more than a job. He runs for his life, taking his one-legged girlfriend Juanita with him to Squirrel Bay, the marijuana-growing capital of Northern California. Here, Edgar finally gets a DJ job that fits his principles and quickly earns a devoted fan-base. By the time their Juárez enemies track them down, Edgar and Juanita have surrounded themselves with a bizarre assemblage of allies: modern-day wizards, an ancient extraterrestrial, a Cossack she-warrior, and a mad scientist determined to destroy his own freakish creations. Once they harness the power of some unique quantum inventions and the imagery of the death cult Santa Muerte, this crew of misfits gets a fighting chance against the bloodthirsty cartels. The bodies – and the laughs – pile up quickly as Edgar and his friends wage a war for justice and freedom…and for their lives.

The dialogue is terse and reminiscent of Elmore Leonard; the characters are like something out of Herbert Read's The Green Child. The humor is hip and punched my funny-bone at an oblique angle, while simultaneously channeling Catch-22-like paradoxes.

A super heroic battle against the abomination that is "The War on SOME Drugs" By Bruce Sommer An entertaining Political Satire with elements of Science Fiction, which the author discusses in the Afterword as those elements being influenced by his reading of Albert Einstein and Jim Holt. Being Political Satire, and the audience it is directed at, I didn't expect the Science to be as well-developed as that in "Hard Science Fiction". In the novel the author focuses on the Protagonists' war against "The War on Drugs".I found the characters to be well developed and diverse. It was my impression that the characters in "Squirrel Days" illustrate that talented people can come from anywhere, underscoring the idea of the sanctity of life and how aggression is anathema to life and the potential good that comes from it.In his irreverent writing the author illustrate that talent doesn't require having a perfect family, meeting some society's idea of "community standards".The author is also not afraid to point out that sexual behavior is part of the lifestyles of most individuals and doesn't censor that fact, and the diversity involved in that lifestyle, from his readers.I was disappointed in the abrupt ending and also felt that there were holes in the writing involving dialogue by third parties of the Science being discussed, instead of recounting the actual conversations that were held by those parties. A legal analogy would be that direct testimony is far superior than hearsay.Despite those few shortcomings, I highly recommend reading this.
