It's 1957, and thirteen-year-old Philip Morris Kleinmann--nicknamed "Skippy" in loving memory of Uncle Nate's late Scottish terrier--already knows zits are caused by eating broccoli, oral book reports are a violation of the cruel and unusual punishment clause of the Eighth Amendment, and Annette Funicello is blowing kisses at him. Now he has clear, daily proof that this is the year he'll meet the baseball great he idolizes. MICKEY MANTLE DOESN'T EAT BROCCOLI is for anyone who's ever been a thirteen-year-old boy...and for anyone who's ever known one.

But a couple of friends said, "You want to laugh? You have to read this book." So I did...and I'm glad! I haven't laughed so much with a book in a long, long time. "Mickey Mantle Doesn't..." reminded me of that TV show, "The Wonder Years." True, there are a couple of chapters that take place at baseball games, but they're educational...and funny. I absolutely loved the cast of characters. Among them are The Schneid, who speaks fluent 8th grade Spanish and knows what really happened to his cousin Amelia Earhart; Fenway Farkis, who's named after his mom's favorite baseball park and looks like Desi Arnaz; and wacky but loveable Uncle Harold (my favorite), who dances in the rain like Gene Kelly...but without an umbrella. Most of all, this is the story of 13-year-old Skip Kleinmann, who not only idolizes Mickey Mantle, but is convinced zits are caused by eating broccoli and oral book reports are a violation of the 8th Amendment. This is truly a gem of a book! Only thing is who's going to play Skip in the movie?

This book scores a home run By Valerie Byron i was never interested in baseball, but after reading Phil Schlaeger's witty first novel, I may just become a fan. Set in the fifties, this book will appeal to young and old alike. It appears to be very authentic, although "Harvey Meshugenah?" Really?. This guy can write - and does it exceedingly well. There are many laugh out loud moments, vivid characterisations and great dialog. I love the tongue in cheek names of some of young Phillip's classmates and teachers, and his relationship with his older relatives. This is the kind of book you just cannot put down. It is real, honest and oh so funny. An added bonus is the perfect editing. I found very few, if any, grammatical errors which is a rarity today. Top marks to Mr Schlaeger for a great first novel. I look forward to many more.

Hilarious By Stuart Whether you grew up in the 1950's or have children or grandchildren who wonder how life was for a young teen back then, this is a great read. This book will surely give you laughs and each chapter will put a smile on your face. A most enjoyable coming of age novel by Phil Schlaeger.
