This short novel is loosely based on the lives of six actual children growing up during the summer of '62 in a small southern town. An edited version of this book is now included as Part 1 in the recently published,"The Rascals of Stafford Street:The Neighbor We Never Knew." The story is mostly a comedy wrapped around a thread of darkness which the kids attempt to unravel. The rascals, (myself, two sisters and two cousins, and my best friend), embrace humor every step of the way and savor each hour as a life and death mystery unfolds in their midst. More than anything, the story re-creates a unique place and time which no longer exists except in the collective mind of those of us who were blessed to enjoy such real togetherness and never ending laughter.

About the Author John Quick was born in middle Tennessee in the mid-50's and continues to live there in a rural farming community in a small rustic cabin he built himself in 1980. He is a former biology teacher and now builds hand carved Windsor chairs. This is his first novel. He has now written the sequel, "The Rascals of Stafford Street: The Neighbor We Never Knew."

It brings great memories of a simpler life when kids could utilize a vivid imagination. Very touching when he describes celebrating holidays with family. Wonderful to read how extended family supported a single mom. The author's description of the characters brings them to life on the page.

A Slower Time By Amazon Customer Aptly titled THE RASCALS OF STAFFORD STREET, the book chronicles the escapades of the author, his siblings, and cousins during the summer of '62. I have no doubt the characterizations, speech, and activities of the rascals are accurately portrayed, although the author says there is "a little added embellishment". I can see Linda shaking her head at some of the shenanigans, even as she tried to distance herself from situations in which they found themselves.A slower time, the sense of family, and prominence of pets in the kids' lives remind me of the writings of Robert Newton Peck. The neighborhood of the setting still exists, off the busy Greenwood Avenue; I drove down Stafford Street a few weeks ago, but I couldn't identify the Quick's house. I'm anxious for the next chapter in the Rascals' lives to be published, hopefully with more pictures.

Mystery, Delinquency, and Nostalgia on Stafford Street By Nelda This is a short coming-of-age, learning-about-life story that will leave you nostalgic for “the good old days” of youthful hijinks, club house meetings, and friendship. If you need or have three-hours to de-stress, laugh, and get inside the voice of a child, this is the book to read. I read it in one sitting during the holidays and found myself laughing aloud at the antics and the remarks only children can make, but also immersed in the mysterious events and juvenile delinquency that threatened to destroy the innocence of the preadolescent children on Stafford Street. I highly recommend this book!
