From the Back Cover A bad wind's blowing from the new energy project known as Windfall Works, carrying the stench of pig poop along with rumors of financial shenanigans, blackmail and murder. Feather Sullivan can't believe her prissy sister Roxanne is involved. But when Roxanne disappears, leaving behind her dead lover and several furious investors in the energy project, Feather and her mother, often at odds, endure hungry hogs, sinister strangers, and a PI with killer instincts and drop-dead looks, to sniff out the murderer. From the award-winning author of Mustard's Last Stand, the debut novel called "an absolute charmer" and "a totally fun read with non-stop plot surprises and humor."

About the Author Kathy McIntosh is addicted--to words. She loves the way words sound and the way they look on a page. In addition to creating offbeat adventures for the zany characters in her novels, she writes and speaks about words and writing. Kathy transplanted from Idaho to the Sonora desert, gleefully abandoning her long johns and snow shovel. Now that the scenery has changed from cottonwoods to cactus, she's enjoying learning about javelinas, saguaros and other desert life. She shares space with a hairy cat, a large, lazy, dog and a husband who most of the time is neither hairy nor lazy. When not enjoying the outdoors or cozied up reading, she loves to travel and explore different cultures and cuisines.

Escape and Laughter By Ethel Lee-Miller Escape and LaughterEscape and laughter, two words that come to mind after reading Foul Wind, Kathy McIntosh’s second book in the Havoc in Hancock suspense series. Female characters both assertive and quirky with names like Feather Sullivan keep the action moving as the masculine lineup brings back Cliff Mustard, aka Roadkill, the hero and environmentalist who literally wears his philosophy on his back. Mix in relationships, sexual tension, jealousy, and greed and the atmosphere is set. McIntosh’s interest and knowledge of keeping things green in our world create a believable plot around a wind farm energy project that isn’t all that clean as unusual alliances are created to track and bring the villains to justice.I picked up Kathy’s first book, Mustard’s Last Stand, last year, looking for stress relief. It did not disappoint. I turned to Foul Wind for a change of pace from poring over social media tutorials, nutritional books, and research for editing. And escape I did right along with Feather’s sassy and smart maneuverings to settle the suspense along with her personal life

Over the past couple days, I've found myself thinking back on this book in a very positive way, and to such an extent that I'm revising my rating to a deserved four stars.Original (11/7/15) review follows:I am tempted to lie and give this book 4 stars, because I want to encourage others to try it even though it misses the mark for me.Drawn by the book's fantastic cover, I'd hoped the author would use Idaho as her setting the way Carl Hiaasen gives us his unique take on South Florida. In retrospect, those expectations were probably unfair. This is a pleasant enough story in its own right, however, and if you are a fan of Hallmark TV, you may really enjoy it.

The solution to the mystery isn't revealed until the last few pages. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you haven't already read "Mustard's Last Stand" (also by Kathy McIntosh) by the time you get to the end of "Foul Wind" you'll want to read "Mustard." so you can continue to be with the wacky characters and their thoughts as they get into outlandish predicaments.

Basil Ackroyd, mayor of a comfortable little town in the French Midi, leads a pleasant life profiting from his position of influence among the malleable citizens many of whom are ex-pat Brits. There are those outside his domain who resent this privileged position he is able to hold by the chance of his mixed parentage. However he has learned his craft in the grubby underbelly of British local politics and is able to carry the battle to his Gallic adversaries. This morning unfolds into one of those days of destiny for our hero.

Futile Deceptions (Basil Ackroyd's France Book 1), by Douglas Wallis

About the Author Douglas Wallis has lived for a very long time in rural France and has observed the uneasy interaction of the French and their, oft resented immigrants, the British. Having a French wife has enabled him to study the differences between their cultures and to realise that in one respect, that of humour, they will never be able to understand each other. Whilst trying to avoid the well worn clichés that characterise many Brits living in France stories, he hopes to gently portray the differences in their approach to living and understanding of the other, which is much more profound than most of his countrymen ever realise.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Sprawling Farce By R Johnson Author Douglas Wallis has penned a sprawling novel set in a French village in which the native French are outnumbered by expats. Farce is an old dramatic form defined as comedy that entertains by creating weird situations. Exaggerated characters, physical humor, and complex improbable plots are typical of farce. As such, farce can't be reviewed by the same standards of other types of fiction. The author delivers on characters larger than life, slapstick type physical gags, and a wild meandering plot with lies, missteps, accidents, and randomness twisting and turning the characters every which way.For me, successful farce is both funny and insightful. On both counts, Futile Deceptions falls short for this reader. Note that I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I would not have read this book otherwise because it was soon apparent the humor in this farce(and there is lots of it) doesn't amuse me although I'm sure it could be funny to many. Perhaps, there are insights into the differences between the English and the French that are too subtle for this American to decipher. Alas, I suspect there is a better audience for this than me.The author does a wonderful job in some of the dialogs in which the characters have completely different perceptions which turns the meaning of their speeches into three distinct interpretations: what the speaker thinks he is conveying; what the listener thinks the speaker means; and what the reader learns by knowing the mindsets of the speaker, the listener, and what is going on.Real estate shenanigans, marijuana-infused beer, a French-style theme park, and numerous liaisons are mixed and mashed together in this sprawling fast-paced story which takes place in the days leading up to VE day in a small French town. Subplots abound to accommodate various pairings and nefarious business arrangements. Deceptions are the order of the day. Government ineffectiveness is an underlying theme. As befitting a farce, as the mass of lies increased, the pace accelerated as the characters headed toward their inevitable collisions.I had to read the first few chapters several times to get into the story. There are (too?) many characters to track, especially because some of them have hidden goals that eventually come into conflict. It was difficult to identify with the main character, Mayor Basil Ackroyd, whose antics caused him so much physical injury, he certainly owes his life to fiction. As I made my way through the final chapters, it still seems several loose ends may not have been tied. Whatever did happen to that insurance claim? Will the mayor's wife find new happiness? Will Stavros ever get a shower? Will the terrorists be brought to justice? The book is decently proofread. If you like farce, Futile Deceptions may be a book for you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well Worth The Price Of Admission By Michael D. Scheffel With the solution to all of his problems almost within reach, the mayor of a small French town, a British expatriate, becomes the focus of a national scandal, fraud investigation, counterterrorism manhunt, blackmail scheme and paparazzi feeding frenzy. This story is a delightful romp through the trials and errors of Basil Ackroyd’s life. His ups, downs, advances, retreats, genius and ineptitude. The author has crafted a tale that involves a bit of political intrigue, a touch of mystery, a well thought out comedy of errors, irreverent humor, a well-written supporting cast and Basil.Basil Ackroyd is completely despicable—morally bankrupt, corrupt, completely self-serving and abrasive. He is thoroughly convinced that he is the only intelligent being in a world of idiots, and tirelessly endeavors to perfect the art and science of official malfeasance for personal gain. He attempts to corrupt everyone and everything he touches. Basil is also one of the most interesting characters I have read in a long time. I enjoyed his faults, elaborate schemes, tirades, irreverent observations and ability to unwittingly destroy his own plans. He is one of those characters I know I am supposed to hate, but I like him anyway. He made me laugh, cringe and shake my head in wonder. The author does a wonderful job of bringing Basil’s world and its inhabitants to life. Several minor characters are introduced, in rapid fire fashion, at the beginning of the book, but individual personalities stand out quite well—a no-nonsense barkeeper, the timid policeman, a band of geriatrics who behave like a gang of teenaged miscreants, Basil’s seemingly brainless secretary who consistently saves the day, Basil’s unhappy yet dutiful wife and others. These are the residents of Durac, a French town saddled with Basil’s unique brand of governance and drawn into the machinations of nefarious outsiders. The only fault I found in this book was a handful of misspellings.I heartily recommend Futile Deceptions, Basil Ackroyd’s France Book 1 and look forward to the next installment. It is well worth your time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Liberty, Equality, Absurdity By Elizabeth Rose Quirky characters populate the French countryside in Douglas Spencer Wallis' Futile Deceptions. The story mainly centers around Basil Ackroyd, a corrupt British expat who serves as mayor to a sleepy town in rural France, largely populated by other expats. He is engaged in a wide array of unethical/illegal wheelings and dealings. It would have been easy to make Ackroyd a villain, but Wallis provides such a cast of comically nefarious characters, he doesn't come off too bad. Everybody has an angle, some of them are just too dull to be any good at scamming each other. This is a farcical comedy that invites readers to revel in the absurdity of serious matters including runaway nationalism and corruption.None of the characters is realistic, but they are all still relatable. Rural France comes off sounding like a lovely place to visit, even if all of the locals are crazy. In all, Futile Deceptions is a fun read, good to take on vacation or for general unwinding.

Disc jockey Edward Allan Twain has some crazy ideas. He believes he can restore justice, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to a world ruled by corruption, prohibition and greed. This crusade destroys his radio career in the U.S. and leaves him scraping by at a tiny border station in Juárez, where he discovers that criticizing the drug cartels can cost him more than a job. He runs for his life, taking his one-legged girlfriend Juanita with him to Squirrel Bay, the marijuana-growing capital of Northern California. Here, Edgar finally gets a DJ job that fits his principles and quickly earns a devoted fan-base. By the time their Juárez enemies track them down, Edgar and Juanita have surrounded themselves with a bizarre assemblage of allies: modern-day wizards, an ancient extraterrestrial, a Cossack she-warrior, and a mad scientist determined to destroy his own freakish creations. Once they harness the power of some unique quantum inventions and the imagery of the death cult Santa Muerte, this crew of misfits gets a fighting chance against the bloodthirsty cartels. The bodies – and the laughs – pile up quickly as Edgar and his friends wage a war for justice and freedom…and for their lives.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gunz and Bunz By Randall Radic This a fantastic read, moving along at rocket speed. I couldn't put it down. The dialogue is terse and reminiscent of Elmore Leonard; the characters are like something out of Herbert Read's The Green Child. The humor is hip and punched my funny-bone at an oblique angle, while simultaneously channeling Catch-22-like paradoxes.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A super heroic battle against the abomination that is "The War on SOME Drugs" By Bruce Sommer An entertaining Political Satire with elements of Science Fiction, which the author discusses in the Afterword as those elements being influenced by his reading of Albert Einstein and Jim Holt. Being Political Satire, and the audience it is directed at, I didn't expect the Science to be as well-developed as that in "Hard Science Fiction". In the novel the author focuses on the Protagonists' war against "The War on Drugs".I found the characters to be well developed and diverse. It was my impression that the characters in "Squirrel Days" illustrate that talented people can come from anywhere, underscoring the idea of the sanctity of life and how aggression is anathema to life and the potential good that comes from it.In his irreverent writing the author illustrate that talent doesn't require having a perfect family, meeting some society's idea of "community standards".The author is also not afraid to point out that sexual behavior is part of the lifestyles of most individuals and doesn't censor that fact, and the diversity involved in that lifestyle, from his readers.I was disappointed in the abrupt ending and also felt that there were holes in the writing involving dialogue by third parties of the Science being discussed, instead of recounting the actual conversations that were held by those parties. A legal analogy would be that direct testimony is far superior than hearsay.Despite those few shortcomings, I highly recommend reading this.

STORM STRUCK: When Supercharged Winds Slammed Northwest Michigan

It was a hundred-year storm, said some. Thin trees snapped like matchsticks; thick ones toppled, one atop another, like felled soldiers. The storm’s straight-wind blast left houses with gaping holes, thousands of residents with no power for days, a Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore that is, said one official, unrecognizable, and a cleanup that could take years.

A UNIQUE, CROWD-SOURCED BOOK FROM THE COMMUNITY

Following a social media blast by Mission Point Press, over 70 local or visiting photographers submitted their visions of the storm, resulting in well over 300 photos from Leelanau County, Traverse City, Old Mission Peninsula, Acme, Williamsburg, Alden, Frankfort, Mackinaw, Kalkaska and Antrim County. Mission Point Press, a Traverse City publisher, will release a book on Sept. 27, 2015, chronicling the historic, tragic event. Titled Storm Struck: When Supercharged Winds Slammed Northwest Michigan, it will include:

• The storm’s anatomy ... what caused it, and why it was so devastating.

• A foreword by Bob Sutherland, founder of Cherry Republic.

• Mapped details of the path it followed.

• Extensive photographs showing the storm and the impact on Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Antrim counties – and more – from more than 70 different photographers.

• Stories of the people affected — their heroics and the swift response to repair the damage.

We were on the outskirts of the storm and saw some of the aftermath, but this brought it home. This may be the future of news: real people conveying what happened, with just astonishing photos. And you also get a real feel for the place, what it's all about and what the people are like, reflected in one event. And it's so fresh; my wife and I were astounded it came out so soon after the storm!

Great pictures on high quality glossy paper. Really told the story. Ordered some for friends on Amazon and significant drop in quality. Poor color quality on cheap paper. Looked like at home printer. Disappointed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Astounding By Cheryl Fettes The stories are as amazing as the photos. Exceptional talent went into assembling this amazing collection of photos of the weather phenom that hit an area of the country known for not having such severe storms. Published just 2 short months after this event, it shows the damage and the characters of the people of this hugely popular region. That nobody died made this a true miracle.

With no money, no experience and absolutely no idea of what awaited, he embarked on a 10-year journey, exploring the alien corners of Asia and discovering the darkest regions of his soul. Acerbic, poignant, witty. Raw like sushi, brutal like Bukowski and dry like the mouth of the Yangtze. The Durian Effect puts the odd in odyssey. By Robert Sherlock It's not often you pick up a book and you feel that the narrative is not only brutally authentic but beautifully written. Sure it's a life-romp of a gweilo lost in transition, but it's a bloody good life-mirror that never seems to lose its effect. Having lived in Hong Kong takes it a notch up for me, but hey, it takes one to know one. M-goi Richard Tong.

Circumstances lead a thief to steal a dead cat. Gravity proves a harsh but philosophical mistress to an unlucky Vietnamese hod carrier. An elderly lady convinces the courts to dismiss her speeding ticket with a story that casts her in an entirely different light. An author loses his completed manuscript to a waitress, a homeless man, and a monkey.

These are the stories so wild and far-fetched that they cannot possibly be true. They are our urban legends, or at least tall tales in the process of becoming legends. They happened to a friend of a friend of a friend. They’re the stories of The Liars’ Club and they can’t possibly be true—or can they?

A mix of funny, touching, and disturbing stories with unexpected turns and twist endings, this is a compilation of tales presented to author Bob Naquin as the truth. Naquin has his doubts, but passes them on to you to judge—with a little added poetic license of his own. After all, a tale grows with the telling, and the best stories have a life—and truth—of their own. Even if they never happened.

Even an eccentric lord is a good catch — especially if he's rich. So thinks Mrs. Smalltree. She is convinced she can get Allen St. George, visiting naturalist and wealthy lord, to marry her daughter, Pamela. But plain, poor cousin Harriet disapproves. Pammy is sixteen, and extremely shy. And there is another, far baser reason Harriet hopes Mrs. Smalltree's plans fail: she's beginning to have feelings for Allen herself. A quirky Regency romance 20,000 words Excerpt Now he looked sheepish at her mention of travel. "Er, not exactly. I spotted him on the way. I do love a hedgehog!" He held it out carefully for her perusal. "There's so much we don't know about the world and the creatures in it. Even a humble hedgehog has secrets clutched tightly." He stroked fingers tenderly back over its little spines, and smiled fondly down at the indignant creature. "Can you spare some milk for him? I'll only study him for a bit and then let him go again. But sometimes they drink milk. I don't want him to starve." This artless announcement had the unintended effect of charming both girls utterly. It also gave poor awkward Pammy an escape route. "I shall go at once," she managed. She rose and hurried from the room, her cheeks pink. A gentleman who could spare attention for a little animal, and who was passionate about learning about the world, could not but be welcome here. As she strode away, she couldn't help feeling that it would be a wonderful visit after all. Harriet smiled affectionately at the hedgehog and then looked up to say something to the gentleman — she never afterwards remembered what — only to see him looking down anxiously into her face as if working out a bothersome puzzle. "You're not really named Hortense, are you?" She laughed and straightened up, smoothing her skirts automatically. "No, indeed. It's Harriet. Sometimes they even call me Harry, you know, but it's never been Hortense before today." She rolled her eyes slightly. "I'm the poor relation." "Ah." He held out a hand. "I'm very pleased to meet you, all the same." She shook his hand solemnly. It was slim and warm even through the glove, which was just a bit grubby. "We have cats and dogs," she told him solemnly, looking into his gentle face. "If you're interested in them. And any amount of rodents, though I shouldn't say so, and insects and birds. There are acres of wildlife. We have badgers, and hawks, and all sorts of creatures." She hoped these delights would encourage him to stay. He didn't stand as tall as many gentlemen, who seemed to tower over women and look down at them. He was only slightly taller than she, who could be only considered of average height for a woman. He might, in a roomful of men, be one of the shortest present. And yet his size suited him well, like a small, clever bird of some sort, perfectly suited to its body, not awkward and long and unkempt like half-grown cattle, the way some young men were, always knocking things over and hunching in on themselves, or booming and strutting like peacocks. He fit his size perfectly. He did look young, although she couldn't guess his exact age. He seemed precise and kind and perfect: exactly what one would want in a gentleman if one could pick from a catalogue. This trait and that...this particular, gentle smile, and these pleasing gray eyes. And then there was the delightful aspect of his interest in nature and animals. It could only please a slightly unconventional woman...especially when he looked at her like that, as though he saw her, as though she was worth the bothering of noticing and listening to. Therefore she spoke somewhat at random regarding the animals on the estate. He nodded gravely, released her hand, and said they would get on very well together if she could show him but some of these delights.

By Christopher I stumbled upon “Mrs. Smalltree’s Folly” after wondering if anyone was still writing stories in the style of traditional Regencies, rather than historical romance novels. After reading the story, I’m not sure it qualifies as either category – but I applaud the author for having a very creative and unique take on the Regency period nonetheless. It is, as the title promises, a quirky story. It involves a poor relation with is actually best friends with the daughter of the family for a change. Neither of the two girls are considered a beauty and both are somewhat subdued in personality, although the heroine is a bit more outspoken. The hero is an exceptionally unusual character as a quiet man more focused on insects and small animals than socializing.Again, I really liked that both the characters and plot are unique and interesting – that’s hard to find. The story isn’t exactly funny, but there are definitely some amusing moments – like when characters are shown from the perspective of an entomologist. I also liked that the author uses a lot of appropriate (or at least relevant) language for the time period. But I do think the story needs a good deal of work. It has a very “fairy tale” feel to it because there is so much narration and so little dialogue. There’s not much romance to see because the reader is only present for a few sentences of dialogue between the main characters before they decide to get hitched. The story continues a ways after the couple gets married – which in a way was satisfying – but in other ways felt like an epilogue that took up the last 1/3 of the novella. Other details could be improved: sentence transitions could be refined with the help of an editor, Mr. Smalltree shouldn’t talk like a modern day redneck, and there was at least one place where the name “Harriet” was used when the author meant to type “Pamela.”Overall, I think the author had some wonderful ideas and unique perspectives. But the story feels like a very rough draft.

How would a creature limited to two dimensions be able to grasp the possibility of a third? Edwin A. Abbott’s droll and delightful “romance of many dimensions” explores this conundrum in the experiences of his protagonist, A Square, whose linear world is invaded by an emissary Sphere bringing the gospel of the third dimension. Part geometry lesson, part social satire, this classic work of science fiction brilliantly succeeds in enlarging all readers’ imaginations beyond the limits of their “respective dimensional prejudices.” Unless you’re a mathematician, the chances of you reading any novels about geometry are probably slender. But if you read only one in your life, this should be at the top of your list. Flatland imagines a two-dimensional world inhabited by sentient geometric shapes who think their planar world is all there is. But one Flatlander, a Square, discovers the existence of a third dimension and the limits of his world’s assumptions about reality and comes to understand the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England. Includes unique illustrations.

Flatland A Romance of Many Dimensions (illustrated), by Edwin Abbott Abbott

About the Author Edwin Abbott Abbott (1838-1926) has been ranked as one of the leading scholars and theologians of the Victorian era. He received highest honors in mathematics, classics, and theology at St. John's College, Cambridge, and in 1862 began a brilliant career, during which he served as schoolmaster of some of England's outstanding schools. At the same time he distinguished himself as a scholar, and in 1889 he retired to his studies. Although "Flatland, a literary jeu d'esprit, " has given pleasure to thousands of readers over many generations, Abbott is best known for his scholarly works, especially his "Shakespearian Grammar "and his life of Francis Bacon, and for a number of theological discussions.

113 of 124 people found the following review helpful. Mind bender anyone? By A Customer Although it isn't very long, Flatland does take a long time to read. This isn't because it is boring, or because it is hard to read, but because of the large amount of digestion one need's to fully comprehend (and to fully enjoy) this book. Even this book contains only 82 pages, it is by no means light reading. The book was originally released in 1884 under Abbott's pseudonym A Square. In the story we follow the journey of a square who lives in a land of two dimensions--a flat land. In it class, and ultimately intelligence, is determined by the amount of sides that a shape has. As the amount of sides a shape has decreases, we find that it also is more emotional and apt to cause destruction through their pointed corners. Women are depicted as straight lines, but one has to take into account the time that this book was published. One can also disregard the story as having any relations to anything in our society and enjoy it for what it is, a mind bending social criticism. In this tale we follow the aforementioned square through his everyday life. we learn what it is like to exist in only two dimensions. We learn of how rain falls form the north and disappears to the south and how gravity is a minute force that pulls to the south ever so slightly. We follow him through the government and through social classes, and the discrimination that comes with them. When his son talks of geometric impossibilities such as 23 (cubed) he has a dream of a lesser land than his, a land called line land. IN it there is not two but only one dimension of being. Through discussion with the kind of lineland, we are offered insight into why our hero the square cannot conceive of the third dimension. Later our hero is visited by a great being, a sphere that appears to him seemingly out of nowhere. This confuses the square very much, and even more when the sphere tries to explain how he passed into his dimension from the third. After heated debate, the sphere takes him and shows him the third dimension, turning our hero into an evolved form of him self, a cube. Form his higher vantage point the square is able to see the innards of those who reside in flatland. He receives tutoring from the sphere about this new dimension and all that it entails. He learns of how limited the field of vision is for those living in flatland, both literally and figuratively. With his previous limits of reality stripped and with his eye opened to the truth, the square quickly follows logic and asks to see the insides of the sphere, and wishes to ascend further into greater dimensions, fourth dimensions and fifth and onward and upward. The sphere is appalled by this heresy and send our hero back to the limited realm of flatland. Here he tries to convince others to be enlightened, but cannot find success. He has a second dream involving the dimension of pointland, no dimensions. The being inhabiting this land is of nothing and knows nothing but itself, which is nothing. There fore this being cannot be disappointed by anything, because it cannot conceive of anything other than itself. We can see the religious parallels to Hinduism and Buddhism here. The completely content creature is of nothingness, much like the state that Buddhists try to achieve, and the outward ranking by dimension not sides can be seen in Hinduism in the spiral path towards God that the Hindu believe they travel along passing from one point on the spiral to another with each passing life. In this land of math all of the lands are contained within each other, much like the rings of the spiral. Finally after this dream the square realizes the futility of trying to convince others through speech, and he feels he must do it through demonstration. Folks hear of his heresy and bring him to the court for the climax of the book. Whether or not the plot of the novel itself is very entertaining, the ability to get your head around concepts that can only be experienced through the mind is challenged thoroughly by this novel. It is a must read for anyone who thinks that they are well educated, as it will quickly tell you just where you stand, theologically, philosophically and mathematically.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. Unimaginable Dimensions By Jon Linden Flatland is a unique and brilliant treatise on a trifurcated level. It is a sociological statement, a mathematical statement and a religious statement all rolled into an incredibly astute 82 pages. The book centers mostly on the differences between a two dimensional world and a three dimensional world; but comments on society, law, prejudice, religion, and proselytizing. The book especially points out the difficulty in envisioning a greater reality and a greater vision than is commonly observed by any individual in any dimension or society. The author's premise relates to things existing in a "plane geometry" world as opposed to a "Euclidian Geometric" three dimensional figure universe. The book carefully illustrates to one denizen of Flatland how the three dimensional world of space works and/or exists. Upon finally understanding the "Gospel of Three Dimensions" our protagonist goes on to try and apply the same arithmetic logic and geometric analogs to a fourth dimensional universe. Shouldn't there exist a fourth dimensional universe that allows an entity to look down upon the three dimensional universe with as much transparency as one can from three dimensions to two?Alas, things become different in dimensions other than the first, a world of lines, the second, a world of shapes and the third, a world of objects. In the zero dimension, all things are a point. Mathematically we know that any number raised to the "0" power equals 1 and therefore, all things in the zero dimension resolve into one single omnipotent point. This condition would also exist in the fourth dimension; as those of us in the third dimension have no model to compare it to. Envisioning a fourth dimension, even with time as the fourth dimension is truly difficult or impossible for us in the third dimension.Interspersed with this witty and intellectual dialogue are comments on society and its structure. He specifically comments multiple times of the degradation of women in society to the lowest social status. Only men are educated in Flatland. Interestingly, he paints a picture of an authoritarian society in which people are judged by their shapes and angles. This reflecting the Victorian societal values around him at the time of his writing.Flatland is recommended to all those who seek to enlighten their view of the universe and of potential universes. It is especially recommended to those seeking higher knowledge of any type. Flatland is truly a multi-dimensional experience and worth every minute.

88 of 97 people found the following review helpful. Horrible Edition By M. Gajdosik This edition is essentially unreadable and not representative of traditional printings. It's printed directly from the digitized (and free) copy from Google Books and has clearly had NO editing work done. The book is filled with references to figures that were not included, mangled words, and seemingly random breaks and markings in some spots. This would be fine for a free digitized text online, but is entirely unacceptable for a paid-for product, especially a short book that would be similarly priced in a physical store.

At first afraid that the boat will put him out of business, he later finds out that he is to be appointed the boat's janitor. What follows are eleven stories set on the house boat. There is no central theme; each chapter features various souls from history and mythology, and in the twelfth chapter the house boat disappears, seguing into the sequel, Pursuit of the House-Boat.

Most of what he wrote, though very clever, will probably come across as very dated today. One exception is A House-Boat on the Styx. This book is written in the succession of Homer, Vergil, and Dante as a major work on "The Lower Regions". It is reminiscent of Lucian of Samosta and several other ancient writers including Aristophanes. Bangs' story takes place in the afterlife when Napoleon, Washington, Baron Munchausen, Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Mark Twain, Kipling and others form a men's club which meets in a plush, luxurious houseboat anchored on the edge of the river Styx. Anyone who likes history and brilliant, satyrical wit would enjoy this book. It is a timeless classic.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bangsian Fantasy By Kat Hooper John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) was an American humorist who edited some popular American magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Puck. His satirical novella A House-Boat on the Styx is responsible for the term Bangsian Fantasy, which refers to stories about famous people in the afterlife (e.g., Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series). In A House-Boat on the Styx, Charon the ferryman is dismayed to discover that he's got some competition in the transportation business -- a posh new riverboat has appeared on the Styx and there's no way his craft can compete. His fears of bankruptcy are relieved, though, when he's asked to be the janitor of the new boat which belongs to an exclusive men's club run by Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh and his colleagues spend their time playing cards and pool, smoking tobacco, and hosting fights (e.g., Goliath vs. Samson) and debates (Noah vs. P.T. Barnum: Which animals should have been saved from the flood?). They also have occasional business meetings in which they discuss agenda items such as whether or not there should be a Ladies' Day on the boat (yes, but Lucretia Borgia and Delilah are not invited) and whether poets should have their own Poets' Corner (yes, because then they won't be lounging across all the chairs, scribbling drafts on the pool tables, and boring everyone else with their recitations). There's almost no action in A House-Boat on the Styx and no need for characterization since all of the characters are already known to us. The story is almost all dialogue as, for example, Shakespeare defends the authorship of his plays, Solomon's Proverbs are called a hack-job, Confucius complains about the poets, the logistics of all of Henry VIII's wives attending Ladies' Day is discussed, Baron Münchausen is accused of making up stories, Sir Walter Raleigh is discovered to be setting up his witticisms so his biographer can record them, Jonah insists that his whale is copyrighted, and Eve laments that she never gets invited to Queen Elizabeth's parties because she has no pedigree.Much of this dialogue is very funny, but it occasionally comes off as a stand-up comedy routine when the jokes are transparently set up:Sir Walter Raleigh: ...Queen Elizabeth could have married a hundred times over if she had wished. I know I lost my head there completely.John Dryden: That shows, Sir Walter, how wrong you are. You lost your head to King James. Hi! Shakespeare, here's a man doesn't know who chopped his head off.Of course, it will be helpful to be familiar with these pre-20th-century characters and their "issues," but most adults will understand most of the allusions and the others can be easily investigated on the internet. I enjoyed the banter, but it was non-stop, so I was ready for it to end when it did. However, at the very end of A House-Boat on the Styx, some action finally did occur when Captain Kidd showed up. So now I'm eager to read the next installment, The Pursuit of the Houseboat.A House-Boat on the Styx and The Pursuit of the Houseboat are available on Kindle in the Halcyon Classics edition, which contains 48 works by John Kendrick Bangs for (at this writing) only $1.99. Both books are rather short and easily read in an afternoon.

Griffith It seems like the intention here was a sex fantasy but the author followed is humorous instincts rather than erotic instincts. Much of the comedy is silly dialog. He borrows an idea from one of his earlier books "Nightlife of the Gods" and has an ancient Greek based statue come to life as a beautiful, naked, amorous, young woman who seeks satisfaction or at least fun. An old couple skinny dips in a pool and physically rejuvenates. People inexplicably spend the whole book naked. No doubt some will take exception to the treatment of the Japanese servant or perhaps for revering cocktails, or operating fire engines under the influence. I allow for the fact that the story is from another time and another mind set. Mostly it's a story that doesn't need to make much sense. It's just light hearted fun.

Dent If your tastes run to 1930's or so screwball comedy I think you'll like this. Liking the Three Stooges would also help. An elderly gentleman visits his long-time lover to celebrate her birthday. Strange things occur from there. The characters ARE stock in trade - the man and his mistress drink like fish and seem none the worse for it. The odd people who come into the story are equally potted, and yet continue to be merely funny and not messy. The houseboy, Nokashima, is stereotypically "Japanese", but like Curley in the Stooges he takes the casual verbal abuse (inflicts his own in return) and is not terribly bothered by it. It is funny, silly, utterly politically incorrect and yet... it's fun. It may be one of those guilty pleasures like calling in sick, sitting in your pajamas for the day eating ice cream and playing video games... but every once in a while that is exactly the sort of mental health day you need. Here it is in print form.

Strom There are those who may object to the treatment of Nockashima, but few who would object to the stereotypical French maid (a nice bit of hypocrisy), and the plot rather fizzles out at the end, but then poor Thorne Smith died while writing it, so what can one expect? In spite of these faults, this book contains the greatest comic dialogue ever written, and, if it is by some obscure chance preserved for posterity, it will put crowds of people into stitches of laughter for generations to come. To say that I cannot recommend it highly enough would be an understatement. I rank The Glorious Pool somewhat above the Bible (which likewise suffers from dodgy authorship and weak points in the plot [not to mention that the Bible is one of the most remarkably humorless books available]), and I always keep a copy near at hand.

Science can be both savior and damnation. The inventions of the great minds of the world can make our lives easier, bring about our destruction and facilitate the delivery of terabits worth of funny cat videos. Technically, those last two might be the same thing. Here is a collection of humorous tales of science like the perils of time travel, how body switching can both help and hurt the gender gap, the woes of the classic Mad Scientist in a modern world and the importance of pizza throughout the universe. So grab your guide and towel. Get ready to brave the dangerous terrain of theory and hypothesis. Madness and Science go hand in hand. Skipping, Singing and Laughing Maniacally! Muahahaha!

By Nicole Chorney Weirder Science is the fourth compilation of short stories in the Alternate Hilarities series, and lives up to its name. Tales of scientists, Mad Scientists, some of their morally questionable activities, and one tale of a time traveler who doesn't want to call for help because the only one who will help him is a future version of himself, and he's a jerk!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A good Guide for your Success with the Atkins Diet! By Peter S. I can't understand some of the negative reviews. The book is what is written: A guide for the Atkins Diet. What I personally really like about this book is, that it helps you, preparing you for and keeping you with the atkins diet. I personally like to know how and why a diet works! What are the benefits and what is important - if you really want to lose weight and keep it that way. For this purpose, this book is highly valuable and I can really recommend this book.

It was easy to read and well written. I tried Atkins over ten years ago and enjoyed the meal plans, but I'd lost the information. This small book presented everything I needed to know in a concise manner. I recommend it to others looking for info on the Atkins Diet.
