This Strange Journey Continues By soapathetic When I read Hayden Wilks’ first volume of Americosis, it was this strange, refreshing novella that I didn’t know what to do with, but knew I wanted more. Finally the second volume, Blood and Sand, was sent to me and I could continue this strange journey. What starts as an acid trip in the dessert that brings Jesus, ends with a bang, literally. This ‘darkness’ that is coming to take over has already started to spread from person to person, duplicating through sexual contact. A very strange apocalyptic curse, if you ask me.Again, I don’t know what to do with this. It’s witty and well written but its so short lived and with the time between the two volumes, it’s hard to keep a consistent flow, hard to keep track of who is who and where things are going. But I have enjoyed each volume so far, this strange look at a dark future. I will keep reading, I need to see what happens.Originally posted on citygirlscapes.com

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is a mile a minute By Ionia Froment I liked this book even better than the first. I think this series has a little something to offer to quite a wide variety of audiences. The writing is clever and at times laugh-out-loud funny.I like the different styles the author uses in the book and that you never quite know where he is going to go next with this crazy cast of characters. If you don't have time to read a long book, but are looking for some thrills and action, this would be a good way to go. Haydn Wilks manages to pack quite a punch in a few pages in these books and I think this will definitely end up being a series worth collecting all of the books in, and certainly worthy of a recommendation to those who enjoy Sci-fi with a bit of a twist.A lot of fun. This review is based on a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

A local church organist is implicated. A hairy Mafioso is adjudicated. The third in Townsley's Kindle-only short stories is dedicated to delivering the usual on-location dining hints, a mad swipe at the Philly Mafia, and a humorous and fun description of liquor and life in West Jersey.

Beach Body: Tommy Valentine, PI, by Gregg Edwards Townsley

Review "Gregg Townsley nails the murder-mystery genre with a strong and compelling action and humor-filled narrative.Townsley's writng is remarkably consistent, with lively dialogue and clever banter between private investigator Valentine and his sassy, saucy, but tough wife, Babs. Fast-paced and sharp."   D. C. Jesse Burkhardt, author of 'Travelogue From an Unruly Youth' and 'The Crowbar Hotel' "...Tommy's a man of few words when he's working, but when he's telling us all about it...imagine Sam Spade or Mike Hammer on amphetamines--a fistful of amphetamines--and you've got the picture." Matthew Paust, author of First Shot, Nature of the Bones, and When the Songbirds Went Silent in Cheerytown.

From the Author Look, it had been a while since I'd been home. And to be frank, the "Philly" cheesesteaks and hoagies" here in the Northwest just don't do the homeland  justice. So when the opportunity came to head back east, Babs and me made the best of it. I took her to all the places I didn't go last time, and spent almost a week doing it. Which means, you get an extra book about LBI. That's Long Beach Island, New Jersey, for you middle and west coasters. Yeah, I once worked in West Jersey, and I watched my trailer catch fire from a bedroom window. So everything I'm writing about is real...except for the stuff that's not.

About the Author Gregg Edwards Townsley is a reflective, free-thinking ex-pastor, martial artist, writer and Western Fast Draw enthusiast living in St. Helens, Oregon. No stranger to the places his Western characters inhabit--Reno, Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe--he raised his children in northern Nevada, from 1984 through 1993, while serving as pastor and head of staff of the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City. Prior to living in Nevada, he made his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Penns Grove, New Jersey, "a veritable fountain," he says, of people and places he likes to visit in his Tommy Valentine, PI series of short stories.Townsley is a member of the Western Writers of America.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. this is my favorite genre of fiction By Amazon Customer Full disclosure: this is my favorite genre of fiction. I'd three-star this on general principles unless it was absolutely terrible. But I'm five-starring it because it's an unusually great example of the genre, written with heart and humor. Tommy is so tough he views the mob as an irritating inconvenience, and would be just a thug if not for his love Babs. It's not high literature, but the world has enough of that. Beach Body is exactly what it sets out to be: gonzo fiction of the highest order.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read, escapism at its best By Brian S Great read, escapism at its best. I really enjoy the settings and local color weaved into the story, makes it a lot more vivid (and makes me glad I no longer live on the east coast!). Babs is a great character, I would like to see more of her and learn about her backstory.

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. side bar description are fun. By John West A little confusing as to where story is taking place. Killer too obvious. Writing is still interesting, side bar description are fun.

Cupcake Craziness By Maria T Join 2 women post divorce as they try to find their way in the world of business and the occasional love interest.Michelle and Chloe were best friends in high school, but after graduation life got in the way and they lost touch. 20 years and a chance meeting later the 2 meet again and decide to work together to open a cupcake shop. And now let the fun times roll!Between incompetent realtors, and designers these two have their share of crazy and hilarious times just trying to make their dream shop a reality. Add in their attempts at love or sometimes just lusty fun and you've got one funny story!Michelle has no filter and says what she means! She is enjoying the single life and her date stories will have you rolling on the floor in laughter!Chloe is the more subdued of the two and wants to find love again, although her date stories have their share of funny too! This is just the beginning to what I'm sure will a laugh out loud series you won't be able to put down!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fun, witty read! By A.C. Wilson I am a huge fan of this author and this dive into a new genre didn't disappoint. The book is witty, silly, and everything in between. Michelle and Chloe have suffered the same fate of having ex-husbands and suddenly finding themselves back on the market for both love as well as a business. They decide to open a cupcake bakery. Michelle is daring, fluent in curse words and only interested in a man who can satisfy her needs. Chloe is the diamond in the rough type. She is still looking for the perfect man, a husband that really means "forever", and she's not as confident as Michelle. Together they create a dynamic duo and I can't wait for the next installation. Get ready for mischeif, fire, laxatives and an encounter with an old lady that puts Cafe du Cupcake on the map!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ready for more like yesterday, cannot wait! By JJ Judith What can I say the cover is really adorable, cute, literally sweet, innocent and kind of looks like a children's/chi chi-lit book. The storyline however, was lavished with very relatable, relevant, humorous, widespread issues we all face. It's a grown up read I loved the characters the girls are genuine, funny, charismatic, willful an admirable group really. DJ's books are all so different like his trilogy is instense, his collaboration more paranormal, and this is lighter, but covers so many underlying issues that I want to explore MORE!! of in the next books of the Cupcake Chronicles I love ❤️ It, I've yet to read a book by DJ I dislike lol. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pearls Landing Amongst Swine: An Idylic Island Scene or Three (Island Trilogy) (Volume 1), by Trevor A Welford

From the Author Have you ever stood in the most idyllic setting imaginable and then felt the  sudden unexpected trickle of icy cold water descending your spine? The Island is such a place, superficially  perfect, harmonious, yet beneath the surface lie the same cardinal sins to which humanity is prone when the walls of paradise are breached. My aim is to create a world where the characters are allowed to speak with their 'inside voices', express the fundamental truths and flaws that the wallpaper of social and moral conventions disguise. The cracks exist every moment of every day, subconsciously wanting to control every aspect of our lives, the brave or insane allow them to show, the scared or corrupt never face at the reflection in the mirror. Adulthood can create a filter on our thoughts, speech or actions and in the void safe behind the smoke screen we become bland automatons. On the island, in my imagination all bets are off.

From the Back Cover   It was a perfect spring day. Periwinkle Mudskip perused the oyster beds and smiled happily. The gulls circling high above his head watched hopefully but Mrs Mudskips favorite son new exactly what to do and precisely how to do it. The Mudskips had been masters of these Oyster beds for as long as most remembered and Periwinkle had been fitted for gum boots from the first day he had walked. The wheeled cart moved smoothly enough over the wet sand and shingle, the nets full of year old sea fruit meant a good few coins in his pockets.   "Any pearls for me Perry?"   Periwinkle thought about ignoring her, wanted just to get on with his chores and the rest of his life but always Adriatica Huffleton loomed like a permanent cloud over his sunlight.

About the Author English by birth and culture Trevor Welford has dabbled in both short stories and prose throughout a varied career in the public and private sectors. Moving to Orcas, in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA gave him the time and freedom to both create anthologies of his writing to date and start major new projects include amongst other things a major novel trilogy. Creatively he takes his influences from such varied authors as Dodgson, Lear, de Sade, Shakespeare and Cervantes. His early prose was often in the form of free verse, reminiscent of 40's and 50's Jazz or beat poetry, styles he references to the present day. A genuine love of the perverse nature of both the English language and its humor pervades throughout often adding surreal or pantomime like episodes and themes. His characters tend to be human in every sense of the word, driven by the essence of their primal natures but also touched with the sentient spark to understand the difference between right and wrong, even whilst invariably making the less ethical or moral choice. Eccentric, quirky, ridiculous and funny mixed with a degree of poignancy that will both surprise the reader and regularly question any previously held perceptions.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mystery, Romance, Resurrection, and the "Cat Guy", Oh My!! A must read!!! By Amazon Customer The author possesses a refreshing and witty writing style. I've never read a book quite like Misty. There's romance but the focus of the plot remains on the main character, Misty. Misty is unapologetic for her vigorous physical relationship with her boyfriend, but I didn't have to slog through pages of 50 Shades of Gray sex scenes. I'm not a prude. I'm just such a prolific reader, sex scenes have become gratuitous and repetitive in my opinion. Misty's commentary on her life or those around her, had me chuckling out loud many times. The author's development of the "Groundhog Day" plot was clever and not at all tedious. Though the novel possesses a paranormal aspect, its not enough to discourage readers who do not care for that genre. For the readers who do enjoy a paranormal twist, Misty provides a novel approach to resurrection after death. And that's not all, Misty must solve, who is killing her and why. Misty is not alone as she tracks down clues. She has her grams, who is battling dementia and lives in a nursing home. Misty also has the neighborhood homeless fellow, dubbed "Cat Guy" to help her piece all the clues together. I enjoyed the author's descriptive abilities. She is masterful in her portrayal of the nursing home and Misty's encounters with the nurses in the hospital, to give a couple of examples. The colorful characters, the unique twists to story, and the mystery add up to an exceptionally entertaining book. I eagerly await more books from this author.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Smart and Fun By Bart Great read. Interesting plot line and an engaging mystery. Sometimes "Groundhog Day" type stories can be repetitive or tedious but the way this story is told keeps it fresh and entertaining. The characters are a lot of fun and they get more entertaining after each "blackout."

I was engaged from the beginning and the author's creative storytelling had me looking for moments throughout my day where I could sneak in a few more pages. Great first novel, can't wait to see what she writes next!

Good Guide book By Fredrick Shaw Phuket goes beyond beaches and bars; it also entails the fun and facts of Buddhist, shrine, Chinese temples, beautifully preserved, old fashioned cafes, museums and shophouses. These are gems you shouldn't really miss on while visiting this unique area and this book reveals these rare gems. You will find many traditional businesses such as printing, hardware, wholesales and great textiles as well as local restaurant and noodle shops. Also the site of substance from laem phromthep viewpoint is a short momentary experience to behold. The book also details much about the Muay fight which most people will find not good siting but it is a tremendous event to behold. Also the book talks about the night market which is a narrow escape route from the super expensive malls and touristy shops. The best which happens on weekends, the market offers a huge variety of souvenirs, clothes and traditional Thai products. This book is a great revelational guide of Phuket, Thai city: the seafood places, beaches, Medina, fishing routes, upside down houses, drinking spots, water park and the delicious pork belly eaten in a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a parades of water sporting events ranging from surfing to scuba diving. I commend the author of this book for the attached maps and locations and recommend a correction of the mistakes made in the arrangement of the subheadings. Thank you

When you're a tourist you probably have a tourist guide, and a tourist guide will take you to all the places popular with tourists, and to me that is hardly experiencing what the place has to offer you. This book is just the right guide you need to have an unforgettable experience. The difference that this book offers is that it was basically written by locals of Phuket. Locals know any place best; they know the fun spots, the beautiful spots, the spots you go to for some peace of mind. So when I visit a place I make sure to have a unique and unforgettable experience; I learn the language a little, I research the culture. Experiencing a place like a local is a surefire way to enjoy the experience.

By Emily Bruns I have found this guide book to be very helpful and informative when planning a trip to Thailand, I especially like the emphasis on the visual - which sets it apart from other guides. Lots of information about Bangkok and the cultural and historic sites of the north. If you're planning to travel extensively around the islands of the south I would recommend supplementing this guide with a more in-depth guide to Thailand's islands and beaches.

    Review

"In its first two editions, I’ve found it to be the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to defining, constructing, and using the metrics every marketer needs today. It’s a book I keep handy on my shelf and refer to frequently. As marketing continues to rapidly evolve, Marketing Metrics continues to stay at the cutting edge. This third edition updates and adds more detail on a number of the key metrics, including brand metrics and ROI. Given the increasing importance of online and social metrics, this new edition now dedicates a chapter to them separate from traditional advertising metrics. Herein you will also find a section about the metrics for the emerging area of neuro-marketing."–Jim Lecinski, Vice President, Americas Customer Solutions, Google

"Marketers know that they must use metrics.  The key--which this book addresses superbly--is which metrics to use and how to use them."  –Erv Shames, Chairman, Western Connecticut Health Network; former President and CEO of Borden, Inc. and Stride Rite Corporation.

In today's data and measurement rich marketing environment, this book is an absolute must-have for marketers at all levels. It is the most comprehensive single source of information on all the important things a smart marketer would want to track, with helpful tips about how to use them. It is encyclopedic in coverage, yet it is so much more fun to read than an encyclopedia. You can leaf through the whole book and learn a ton, and then you find yourself (at least I do!) going back again and again to refer to specific metrics. Its a must-read book, but its even more valuable as a desk-reference. I have one copy at school and another in my home office. And I've given up on trying to return it to the book shelf -- I use it so often that it sits within easy reach on my table most of the time. And, I'm really delighted to see how much new stuff the authors have added in this newest edition -- on topics from online and mobile to neuroscience.Kusum Ailawadi

It was the first book (and continues to be the best book) to combine all related marketing metrics in one resource. I now have all three editions (two in my home office and one at work). These books provide comprehensive information on a host of metrics that enable you to train your team about how to speak "finance-language" to the CFO/finance department. It is a reference book that essentially lists all marketing related terms, their definitions, and their calculations. On top of it, the more recent editions have some great survey data that provide insight on which marketing metrics marketers find the most valuable. I have been able to use this data to explain to non-marketers why some measures are more valid than others. In sum, I highly recommend these books as primary reference material for marketers and anybody working with marketers (e.g., finance, accounting, etc.).

Whisper, Sasha, and Mae have finished college and each has her own idea of what her future holds. But before they can take on the world (or hide from it), Whisper receives a surprising inheritance from her eccentric Aunt Della; a small fortune and a decrepit island mansion. She can only keep her windfall if she moves in immediately… with everyone who attended her last birthday party! Now it’s on her to hold together a crumbling historic home filled with college friends, severe relatives, and her childhood crush with his colorful singing group. Sasha, Whisper’s fraternal twin sister, makes the trip with the group out to the dilapidated old building. She, uninterested in the inheritance, supports her sister even though she believes a household built on friendship is ridiculous. It sounds ideal, but Sasha embraces the practical approach to life. She needs no one to protect her. But Clark, a pristine tower of ideals and member of the now-resident musical group, seems to have it in his mind to do just that. Mae, Whisper’s journalist friend and college roommate, sees wonder in the island and the eclectic group of young people. She follows confidently, knowing her boyfriend David is along for the ride. As she falls more in love with the house, the small town, and the family of friends, David shows little interest in connecting with anyone but her. The growing divide strains more than just their relationship. Three friends’ lives and loves bind, facing either a united future or a terrible rift. However, love appears in unlikely places in the Mishap Mansion.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Flat characters and no plot structure By Chelsea Heidt So, I read this book for two reasons: I needed a book to read that was written by someone under 30, and I really didn't want to read Divergent. So I went to the NaNoWriMo Facebook group and asked if anyone there had written anything that would qualify, and this one got tossed out as a possibility--I honestly don't remember which of the listed authors mentioned it, and I'm not going to go back and look. I was really hoping for good things from this. The premise, that a group of friends moves into a mansion in Hawaii and has romantically-inclined adventures, sounded cute. But in execution, I was severely disappointed, and I don't really think that I could recommend it.I took a ton of notes while I was reading this because so many things bugged me, something that I rarely do when reading because I don't have that many issues with a book. But here, they just kept piling up until I had to take notes or risk losing the whole train of thought. Let me touch on the most minor one first: editing. I normally have a lot of issues with indie books and line edits, use of grammar, etc, and I have to say that wasn't the case here, except for a few minor cases. The dialogue isn't written correctly when the characters cut each other off, with the dashes left outside the quotation marks instead of inside of them, and there are several instances of the authors using a homophone for the word they meant--the one I noted down was using "feinting," as in faking, instead of "fainting," as in passing out, but I remember seeing a few more before that. For the most part, however, there's a solid grasp of spelling and grammar here, which is often missing in independently-published works. They could, however, use a proper book formatter. This book is written like a blog, with line breaks between all of the paragraphs instead of tabbing, and no working table of contents, things that don't take that much effort to include but can make a big difference in streamlining the reading experience. No, what bothered me here was the structure and plot of the book itself...by which I mean that there wasn't any. The plot is supposed to be that the main character, Whisper, finds out that she inherits her aunt's mansion and fortune in Hawaii, on the condition that she and the guest list from her last birthday party move in immediately, leaving behind their jobs and lives in the process, of course. Because all of these people would totally be willing to jump at the strings of a dead lady they've never met... For what purpose? No one knows. I certainly never found out, like I never found out why the party guests, despite having attended said party together, had never met when they moved in. This read as a meandering "slice of life" role play rather than as a book with a plot (even a character-driven one) and solid structure. Whenever anything starts to lag, which things do quite often, the authors just toss in another character for no apparent reason than to get things going again. Nothing ties in to a larger plot. And can we talk about names? What kind of names are "Whisper" and "QT" (As in Cutie? Really?) when the rest of the people have normal names? Whisper's appears to have no purpose other than to designate her as a "special snowflake." QT's bothered me, too, but luckily she wasn't mentioned that much, despite being mentioned in the first few pages. She hardly showed up at all after that, until the authors apparently decided they needed a wedding to liven things up--again, for no apparent reason other than things had stopped moving.I hated Sasha, and found no redeeming qualities in her. Sasha is a supreme b---- and doesn't really get over it--until she does for (again) no apparent reason. All the characters here run around protesting that they don't like each other until, suddenly, they confess their love for each other. They have no depth, flip-flopping between nice to mean and happy to angry with no in-betweens. Sasha and Daniel are the worst examples of this (David aside, who was clearly meant to be a bastard, and was overwrought in being one...) and I absolutely could not designate them as likable or believable love interests for other characters after the way they behaved. Sasha is the sort of girl who hates on other girls because they're pretty, and yells at another character for having "vain little habits" when the character in question (Molly, another character apparently without any purpose...) wants to get her brush out of the bathroom while Sasha is brushing her teeth. Apparently wanting to brush your hair before breakfast is the height of vanity. One could attempt to argue that Sasha is so insufferable at the beginning in order to show her growth as the story goes on--but there's not growth so much as there is a sudden change without any real motivation behind it other than falling in love. Because love clearly actually changes people. (It doesn't.) The characters don't have believable motivations on any front, and act like cardboard cutouts rather than real people. I couldn't really believe or like any of them because they were written without any dimension and were apparently supposed to be adults but ran around acting like hormonal middle school students instead. And let's not even talk about the supposed historical society sub-plot, if you can call it that, which has SO many things wrong with it...Actually, let's talk about it. Let's talk about how the historical society apparently expects a crumbling mansion to be renovated at any moment, or they won't give it their endorsement as a historical landmark, how they can apparently evict the inhabitants from the premises even though the property is privately owned, how the head of the historical society can apparently be outranked by some random kid who just moves in but is a Secret Agent of the society the entire time, how they hate the mansion but want it as their headquarters the entire time...What?In addition to all of that, the writing managed to be too simplistic and too overwrought at the same time. The characters emotions and motivations were told, rather than shown, but the authors must have felt the need to describe the characters and Hawaii in such great detail that adjectives end up appended to every other word, and you end up like sentences like this: "Through the window was a long swatch of green, interrupted with palms and various island jewels that swept from the house to the beach, which was dimly glimpsed in its liquid beauty," and "She had lustrous, innocent eyes, and an endearing smile. Sasha didn't have to guess that everyone loved her the moment they met her; it was written all over the young lady." Ugh.Finally, let's touch on how this book as categorized. All of the categories on Amazon trickle down to "inspirational," "Christian," and "romance." I guess there's a minor romantic aspect to this book, but again, it seems like kids in middle school rather than functioning adults. I'm guessing that's what contributes to the "Christian," aspect, because there's nothing religious about this at all. So it has to be that the characters aren't running around having raunchy sex. Which is fine, but...the romance was still really wimpy. You can write a good romance without including raunchy sex, and there are tons of them out there that are far more engrossing and enjoyable than this one. As for the "inspirational" aspect... I'm not sure where that comes in at all.I don't recommend this book. I think the authors have a knack for cute ideas, but as of this point they don't seem to have the finesse to execute those ideas well, and this needs a lot more polishing before it becomes good.1.5 to 2 stars out of 5.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The new and improved review. By J. J. Roper I previously jumped to conclusions about this book. Now, after having better chance to look it over better, I'll have to say that it is the best guide of its type. The illustrations are very good, but not as good as Ridgely and Tudor's "Songbirds of South America" BUT, van Perlo's book is more compact and much more convenient because the text, with maps, and illustrations are on facing pages. That is a huge plus to me. And, with that said about the illustrations, I'll add that having very good illustrations, maps and text all on the same pages makes the book much better to use in the field. Also, it is less than half the weight of R&T's book. The taxonomy is up-to-date, which is another plus.My earlier less-than-ideal review was based on some erroneous information and my own conclusions. I would love to have this book as a Kindle book with the same format, that I could use on my smart phone! The version I have of a previous book is a little complicated but, it is still good enough that I use it rather than other guides. If this book comes out in kindle, I will certainly try it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Probably van Perlo's best illustrations so far. By Mike R. This new book is intended to be a companion volume to the older "Birds of South America - Non-Passerines: Rheas to Woodpeckers" by Erize, Mata, and Rumboll. It is similarly compact as that title, but a little thicker. With this new book on the South American passerines by van Perlo, all the known species of birds from that continent are now illustrated in a compact two volume set, with accompanying text and range maps on the facing page. Both volumes are nearly identical in layout and are very easy to use.I've long been a fan of Ber van Perlo's loose, free style of bird illustration. I know painterly or "sketchy" work isn't everyone's cup of tea, but van Perlo's work has some strengths that some other illustrators are weak in, including many who turn in tighter, slicker looking work. To my eye he has usually been pretty consistent about capturing a bird's gestalt in his drawings, although the colors are sometimes a little off. In his other books similar to this one, the plates also tend to be crowded with very small figures, all more or less standard "cookie cutter" side views which emphasized male breeding plumage. That's fine, it's doubtless hard to avoid that in a compact format where so many species are featured. Yet I'm happy to see that in this new book the author has taken a different approach. Namely there is a better use of the small space provide on the page. In this new book the figures on the plates average a little larger than in his other books, and many distinct female plumages are shown complete, not mostly hidden behind the drawing of the male. In a few instances the female gets a full illustration and there is only a head shown for the male (all those gray male antbirds which look more or less alike). Generally the poses are more varied and lively than in van Perlo's other books. The plates are less crowded, the vast majority showing only ten species, so there is no flipping around to look for texts or maps on adjacent pages. There is another, much bulkier book on the passerines, or song birds of South America by Ridgley and Tudor, which recycles and updates the illustrations from their earlier two volume "Birds of South America". It's called "Field Guide to the Songbirds of South America: The Passerines." It is also an excellent book, and Guy Tudor's illustrations are simply marvelous. If you were to only have one field guide type book on the passerines of South America, you might want that one instead, because of the more extensive and detailed text. But it doesn't quite illustrate all the species, and as mentioned, it's much larger and heavier than this new book by van Perlo, which can't be beat if you intend to bird in widely separated regions and wish to travel light.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. second volume of a pair that might be indispensable in some instances By G. Hunter Probably a second or even third reference (along with its companion volume devote to non-passerines) for any one country or even region, in which instance the illustrations (often depicting a range of geographic variation), the distribution maps and the concise species accounts might prove quite helpful. Both volumes would be in my estimation essential for any birder traversing more than one South American region or any country not adequately covered by its own guide. An added benefit is the insight into current taxonomic thinking.

Buzz Meyers grew up in the 1960s, so it should be no surprise what he’s all about: baseball, sex, rock ’n’ roll—and baseball.

Toiling at different jobs, he can’t help but think how wonderful it would be to work at a ballpark, and he gets his chance when he becomes the sales and concessions manager for the Hampton Roads Monitors, a minor-league team near Virginia Beach.

He might not be a player, but this is the next best thing, and while he puts in long hours, he also gets the chance to party and meet baseball legends, upcoming stars, and a cast of unforgettable characters.

The longer he stays in the business, the more he realizes he’s partying a little too much, and he starts trying new things, including giving back to his community, lecturing, acting, singing, and even hosting his own radio show.

When he runs for elected office at the same time his team is engaged in a heated pennant race, he has no idea what to expect. But no matter what happens, he can bask in the satisfaction of having lived a major-league life in the minors.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. by Miers bist du shein By wordworker Minor League Buzz, Major League Life is a simply written, true-to-life account of the author's slowly skirting the sidelines of his childhood dream, a career in major league baseball. Providing much comic, sometimes clownish, and often self-deprecating humor, it occasionally comes off as an overly contrived attempt to get the rookie to react with a decided blush. This might work among the simplistic stands of Kowtown, where a good deal of the action takes place, but falls flat in underscoring every play. Perversely, while the frustrated await the much-prolonged maturation of Meyers, we voyeuristically revel in the saturation of Buzz.Overall, small-time Buzz's fly-by-your seat ascension to and through the minor leagues (and assorted accomplices) reveals his myriad missteps, devilish pranks, clumsy (though clever) rebounds, and ultimate successes in spite of same. While eschewing the majors to remain a big fish in a small pond, this thinly-veiled diary should garner its share of local kudos (and frowns) along with eventual widespread readership; like Mr. Miers, it is truly a diamond in the rough. It is obvious that the work invested in this soul-baring endeavor almost equals what it took to get there in the first place. I don't expect a sequel. How does one top their first home run stopping short of overkill? You be the umpire. (Gee, I wonder if Mr. Meyers/Miers should go down in the Mustache Hall of Fame.)

Hilarious antics and very interesting to see a side of baseball you don't usually get to. A must read for any baseball fan.

By KC If you want to know what it is like to be involved in Minor League Baseball, and with a dash of "sex, booze, and Rock n Roll", then this is the book for you!!Not only is it packed with hilarious stories (caught myself laughing out loud many times while reading), it is written in a style that is fun, as well as informative, which kept my interest throughout the whole book. The protagonist evolves from some kid with just a dream and achieves that dream, and along the way becomes a man. While reading, I was thinking that this would be make a great movie (sort of like a "Bull Durham" "For the Love of the Game" and "Major League".)Who knows? Maybe some day it will!Highly recommended to all baseball fans and non baseball fans alike.
