CBT as a treatment for many psychological problems By Convoke Cognitive Behavior Therapy - CBT - by Rebecca Franks is a self-help book of quality. Through Cognitive Terapy, teh author says, patients learn to change or stop unwanted behaviors.I am a layperson, so I cannot comment on the knowledge and advice in this book. However, unlike many such books, this one is gogently written and the information is well organized. The book tells us that Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment option that CBT is one of the most effective treatments available for problems such as depression.. She also recommends CBT for low self-esteem, addiction, and other ailments.Negative or distorted beliefs are identified so that individuals can recognize destructive thought patterns, understanding how these beliefs are contributing to one’s destructive behaviors. This book offers guidance in Individuals then challenge these thought processes, changing their behaviors through various methods. While emphasizing the caveat that CBT may not be helpful for all conditions, the book introduces the reader to CBT, which it says is a set of respected and recommended therapies to improve individual well-being and quality of life. This text offers an understanding of CBT and explains how it has helped patients recover from many disorders and conditions, improving their overall well-being.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was an English writer. His prolific and diverse output included philosophy, ontology, poetry, play writing, journalism, public lecturing and debating, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox". Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories-first carefully turning them inside out." For example, Chesterton wrote "Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it." Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both liberalism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position with Catholicism more and more, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius".

After seeing him quoted and referred to in so many other books I had been reading, I decided it was time to check out his actual work. I was not disappointed, and feel like I have discovered some hidden treasure!Beautifully written, mixing the ridiculous with the profound, I found myself underlining many times in this book. G.K. Chesterton's main character Innocent Smith managed to restore so much joy to even my life. Such is the goal of this character, to restore the joy of being alive. He manages to achieve this in a manner that many consider childlike or quite certainly insane! Innocent Smith aids other members of the tale in discovering the meaning of death; "It isn't only meant to remind us of a future life, but to remind us of a present life, too." A reader walks away from this work, realizing the beauty of the birds, the sweet smell of the flowers and the delight of one's own romantic love. I find myself indebted to this work for helping to restore my joy of living.I did discover one difficulty in starting this read. I am so accustom to reading such easily digested material, it took me several attempts to actually get past the first three pages. I thought to myself, 'how many adjectives does he need!' After crossing this hurdle, I was so delighted by the rich descriptions as one viewing a fine piece of art.I highly suggest this work with 5 out of 5 stars and am looking forward to reading more of Chesterton.

Chesterton writes a grown up novel about those who must become like little children to enter the Kingdom of God. Chesterton treats each mundane moment as momentous and the repetitious as startlingly new. Life for him is adventure and joy and he can't stand to see anyone not joining him.The Spirit of God is the wind that moves throughout the entire book and stirs up the lives of all it touches.I'd love to see this book as a play.

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Stop Taking Yourself So Seriously! By C. N. Gallimore Whether you're new to Chesterton or have read everything else he has written I cannot recommmend this book highly enough. In my opinion this is the best of his more serious allegorical novels in that the meaning is not hidden and confused as it is in some of his other works, but is right there ready to smack you in the face. Chesterton was always concerned with the problems facing the modern man (and while he wrote at the turn of the 19th century his "modern man" is still as modern today as it was then). The increasing societal pressures facing both the Christian and the non-Christian alike were then as now forcing people to view the world with a serious and somber tone, always looking to their survival in a world where absolutes were lacking and authority was no longer to looked to for answers. In this dismal worldview it is all too easy for man to get so caught up in the day to day struggles that he forgets that he is alive, that he is a living breathing person with a will of his own and not merely an automaton of a crushing society. He is alive, and that is a gerat thing! While the story is rather strait forward and not nearly as interesting in its own light as some of his other novels, this book is so full of life that the reader cannot help but want to jump up and down at times at the reemergence of joy in the lives of the characters. While the "irresponsible" lifestyle prtrayed in the book should not be taken as a realistic alternative to the monotony of life that has clutched so many, the exposure of stodginess for what it really is should be a warning to anyone who has ever found themselves snearing at the strange behaviors of children or getting too caught up in our increasingly materialistic culture. While not as overtly religious as some of his other books this book is perhaps most aplicable to those people who are too religious, whatever their philosophy. Those who have such a low opinion of the world and of man that they have forgoten that while their is evil in the world, the world was created good and their is still much to be found here. One of Chesterton's most endearing and uplifting classics, a must read for anyone who feels only too strongly the immense weight of the world on their shoulders, and a good reminder of the necessity of having some fun for everyone else.

Algorithms increasingly run our lives. They find books, movies, jobs, and dates for us, manage our investments, and discover new drugs. More and more, these algorithms work by learning from the trails of data we leave in our newly digital world. Like curious children, they observe us, imitate, and experiment. And in the world’s top research labs and universities, the race is on to invent the ultimate learning algorithm: one capable of discovering any knowledge from data, and doing anything we want, before we even ask.Machine learning is the automation of discovery—the scientific method on steroids—that enables intelligent robots and computers to program themselves. No field of science today is more important yet more shrouded in mystery. Pedro Domingos, one of the field’s leading lights, lifts the veil for the first time to give us a peek inside the learning machines that power Google, Amazon, and your smartphone. He charts a course through machine learning’s five major schools of thought, showing how they turn ideas from neuroscience, evolution, psychology, physics, and statistics into algorithms ready to serve you. Step by step, he assembles a blueprint for the future universal learner—the Master Algorithm—and discusses what it means for you, and for the future of business, science, and society. If data-ism is today’s rising philosophy, this book will be its bible. The quest for universal learning is one of the most significant, fascinating, and revolutionary intellectual developments of all time. A groundbreaking book, The Master Algorithm is the essential guide for anyone and everyone wanting to understand not just how the revolution will happen, but how to be at its forefront.

The Master Algorithm: How the Quest for the Ultimate Learning Machine Will Remake Our World, by Pedro Domingos

Review “Domingos writes with verve and passion, and the book has a strong narrative.”—New Scientist“[The Master Algorithm] opens the doorway to a world many of us never see or think about, though it has a tremendous impact on our daily lives.”—Shelf Awareness for Readers“[The Master Algorithm] does a good job of examining the field’s five main techniques...The subject is meaty and the author…has a knack for introducing concepts at the right moment.”—The Economist“Wonderfully erudite, humorous, and easy to read.”—KDNuggets“Domingos is a genial and amusing guide, who sneaks us around the backstage areas of the science in order to witness the sometimes personal (and occasionally acrimonious) tenor of research on the subject in recent decades... This is a highly inclusive book, aimed at a wide range of readers from the merely curious to those who might be interested in pursuing a career in the field. Descriptions and discussions are presented with a commendable lack of jargon and the examples are clear and accessible.”—Times Higher Education“An exhilarating venture into groundbreaking computer science.”—Booklist, starred review “[An] enthusiastic but not dumbed-down introduction to machine learning... lucid and consistently informative.... With wit, vision, and scholarship, Domingos describes how these scientists are creating programs that allow a computer to teach itself. Readers...will discover fascinating insights.”—Kirkus Reviews“This book is a sheer pleasure, mixed with education. I am recommending it to all my students, those who studied machine learning, those who are about to do it and those who are about to teach it. The author succeeds not only in presenting an accurate and entertaining journey through the methodological ideas behind machine learning but also in embedding those ideas in a colorful tapestry of philosophical questions concerning the ultimate capacity of man to emulate itself. A must read for both realists and futurists.”—Judea Pearl, Professor of Computer Science, UCLA and winner of the A. M. Turing Award“Starting with the audacious claim that all knowledge can be derived from data by a single ‘master algorithm,’ Domingos takes the reader on a fast-paced journey through the brave new world of machine learning. Writing breezily but with deep authority, Domingos is the perfect tour guide from whom you will learn everything you need to know about this exciting field, and a surprising amount about science and philosophy as well.”—Duncan Watts, Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research, and author of Six Degrees and Everything Is Obvious *Once You Know the Answer“The holy grail of computer science is a machine that can teach itself, as we humans do, from experience. Machine learning could help us do everything from curing cancer to building humanoid robots. Pedro Domingos demystifies machine learning and shows how wondrous and exciting the future will be.”—Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs and The Innovators“Machine learning, known in commercial use as predictive analytics, is changing the world. This riveting, far-reaching, and inspiring book introduces the deep scientific concepts to even non-technical readers, and yet also satisfies experts with a fresh, profound perspective that reveals the most promising research directions. It's a rare gem indeed.”—Eric Siegel, founder of Predictive Analytics World and author of Predictive Analytics: The Power to Predict Who Will Click, Buy, Lie, or Die“With terms like ‘Machine Learning’ and ‘Big Data’ regularly making headlines, there is no shortage of hype-filled business books on the subject. There are also textbooks that are too technical to be accessible. For those in the middle—from executives to college students—this is the ideal book, showing how and why things really work without the heavy math. Unlike other books that proclaim a bright future, this one actually gives you what you need to understand the changes that are coming.”—Peter Norvig, Director of Research, Google and coauthor of Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach“Machine learning is the single most transformative technology that will shape our lives over the next fifteen years. This book is a must-read—a bold and beautifully written new framework for looking into the future.”—Geoffrey Moore, author of Crossing the Chasm“This is an incredibly important and useful book. Machine learning is already critical to your life and work, and will only become more so. Finally, Pedro Domingos has written about it in a clear and understandable fashion.”—Thomas H. Davenport, Distinguished Professor, Babson College and author of Competing on Analytics and Big Data @ Work “Machine learning is a fascinating world never before glimpsed by outsiders. Pedro Domingos initiates you to the mysterious languages spoken by its five tribes, and invites you to join in his plan to unite them, creating the most powerful technology our civilization has ever seen.”—Sebastian Seung, Professor, Princeton, and author of Connectome“A delightful book by one of the leading experts in the field. If you wonder how AI will change your life, read this book.”—Sebastian Thrun, Research Professor, Stanford, Google Fellow and Inventor of the Self-Driving Car

By Karl Rosaen This book isn't perfect, but I'm still giving it 5 stars because it provides a better overview of the entire field of Machine Learning than any other book I've come across. My background is in computer science and software engineering and I've been interested ML as more of a hobbyist and outside observer for a few years (reading some books, taking Andrew NG's coursera course), just recently dabbling in some applications professionally. What I was still missing before reading this book was as high a level understanding of where all of the models and technique in the field of ML fit. Other books describe the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning, but this book goes further in describing how, say, decisions trees, support vector machines and deep neural networks fit compared to each other and within which subfields statistics play a larger role than others. The book also puts many techniques in historical perspective that I found very helpful, such as the rise, fall and rise again of deep neural networks with support vector machines taking a lead as the hottest technique in between (while also making clear that SVMs are a useful technique with unique strengths today). Finally, it makes clear that these techniques are not all competing for being the best overall at everything, but that they can be used quite complementary and/or they have unique strengths within certain problem domains. The book accomplishes all of this through a survey of broad subfields of ML, how each has attempted to be *the* master algorithm, has fallen short in some ways, but remains the best at some things and could play a role in the state of the art master algorithm (while acknowledging we're not quite there yet). So while the term 'master algorithm' is somewhat of a gimmick (as he acknowledges), it's a good way to think about what ML is attempting to accomplish as a field: building working, adaptive software systems with less and less human assistance by learning from data, and to see how many specific techniques have played a role in progress. What I don't know is how accessible this book might be to someone who's less technical. I think the first couple chapters would be a great read for anyone with a general interest, making clear how ML differs from the traditional software / automation that has brought us so far, but it could be that the details within the rest of the chapters that go into more depth would be too in the weeds.I've also read some other reviews from technical readers that assert the book lacks enough depth to be helpful, but this wasn't the case for me, in fact the level of detail was perfect—just deep enough to match with details I'd skimmed before in previous surveys of the field yet not so deep that I couldn't get through and enjoy the chapters in a casual evening read. The author also explained some concepts better than I've read anywhere else before, such as the debate is between frequentist and bayesian statisticians.

49 of 54 people found the following review helpful. thought provoking but biased By Tao Xu It is a thought provoking book, covering 5 tribes of supervised learning, a bit of unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and other stuff like chunking and relational learning, etc. It has lots of speculations about the master algorithm which could learn everything. The climax of the book is the circled map of master algorithm. For each topic, it talks about the most important ideas, algorithms and applications, and how are they connected with other tribes. It also emphasize a few common principals: overfit, curse of dimensionality, explore and exploitation, structure learning and parameters learning, etc. The author is very good at explaining in a few simple sentences the gist of an advance algorithm e.g. TD(lambda) and value function approximation in reinforcement learning, message passing, MCMC and Kalman filtering in bayesian, etc.The author is a bit biased, perhaps 80+% Bayesian, claiming Markov Logic Network is the secret ingredient of master algorithm. I found that part the most unsatisfactory in book, not convinced by the arguments.

But while it claims to be about its future, the focus is more on its past. Domingos' gives us a tour of the five different Machine Learning fiefdoms (Evolutionaries, Connectionists, Symbolists, Bayesians, and Analogizers ), how they connect, and what their histories are.If you're not familiar with machine learning at all, it's a broad but interesting overview. At times the discussion gets a little too technical. Sentences like "...we can view what SVMs do with kernels, support vectors, and weights as mapping the data to a higher-dimensional space and finding a maximum-margin hyperplane in that space" (pg 196) make it clear Mr. Domingos is no Malcolm Gladwell.Another issue I had with the book is Mr. Domingos' tendency to overstate the current state of machine learning. Early on he claims Obama's use of machine learning was instrumental in his 2012 win against Mitt Romney. "The candidate with the best voter models wins, like Obama against Romney" (Prologue, pg xiv). I don't know of a single political scientist that would agree with this. Obama won the popular vote in 2012 by nearly four percentage points. That's far too high a margin to be attributable to any ground game.Mr. Domingos also has a tendency to insert his own work into the book. I could have done without the self promotion. If you're really interested in AI, but have no background in it, the middle of the book provides a broad overview of it's many sub-disciplines. I'm just not sure I can say it's worth it.

Ever wonder what is going on in a baby's brain? Or how you can best nurture a child's natural development? Or why exactly Bach is better than Mozart for babies? This book will explain why. No technical knowledge is necessary, as Shore makes recent neurological findings accessible to all those who come into contact with young children. Everything a baby experiences in his or her first five years is building the foundation of life's learning potential. Through increasing the complexity of the early childhood environment in developmentally appropriate ways, we can nurture young children's brains. Developing Young Minds is a must-have for new parents or caregivers of young children.

Developing Young Minds: From Conception to Kindergarten, by Rebecca Shore

Review Shore, a parent and experienced educator at the college and high school levels, makes an argument for stimulating, complex, and brain-conscious early childhood education, relying on her long-standing interest in 'how and why learning occurs in the brain the way that it does.' The book’s first third outlines scientific findings about the brain that demonstrate the need for a stimulating, language-filled environment during the early years of a child’s life. The next section promotes art, dance, and music for the developing brain. Although this can be done cheaply and easily, the author includes an endorsement for a set of Bach CDs she produced. The last section, punctuated with useful childcare checklists and an age-by-age guide, encourages parents to provide enriching learning environments that are developmentally appropriate and allow young children to grow at their own pace. . . .There’s a little something for all . . . audiences. (Publishers Weekly)Focusing on the importance of the first five years of life in children’s intellectual development, Shore reviews neurological research showing how important these years are for learning, given what is now known about the structure of the brain. She makes complex material accessible and in most chapters summarizes the important points. In the last chapter she gives specific examples (organized by age and sensory mode) of activities to do with children from birth onward. She devotes two chapters to the significance of music in the development of children’s minds, emphasizing the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. She has created CDs of Bach’s music for babies and writes convincingly of the music’s positive effects. Shore points out that young children are capable of more complex learning than was thought possible in the past, and she wants parents to be aware and take advantage of these crucial early learning years. . . . .Summing Up: Essential. All readers. (CHOICE)If you’ve ever watched babies – even those under a year old – erupt with joy as they watch dancers on TV, you understand what Shore means when she says 'music matters in the lives of young children.' I’ll admit it’s a bit of a stretch to imagine the busy mothers of infants or toddlers having time to read every word of this well-researched book. But if you’re the mother or the grandmother of a busy mother, tell them this: Bach is tops for building the brains of babies and toddlers. (The Charlotte Observer)Dr. Shore has blended current research findings in the area of brain development with what we know about how young children learn to create an accessible resource for families, educators, and policy makers. This book can help both parents and educators reflect about many aspects of the nature of childhood in our culture. The material is not only highly engaging, but contains a wealth of ideas about delivering educational activities in a way that enhances their cognitive complexity and therefore maximizes benefits for young children. (Rich Lambert, PhD, director of The Center for Educational Measurement and Evaluation, UNC Charlotte)Dr. Shore has produced a marvelous, well-informed, highly readable book that has the potential for substantially influencing a number of critical educational issues. She refocuses the discussion regarding the misguided attempts to "fix" the failures of America's schools and the poor educational performance of too many of America's children on the exciting possibilities encompassed in the current research in early learning. Dr. Shore offers reasonable solutions that can be implemented at the level of the family, the school, the state, and ultimately, the nation. (Barbara Clark, professor emeritus, California State University, Los Angeles, and author, "Growing Up Gifted")That music not only calms the savage beast, but is good for human development has long been suspected. Now, Rebecca Shore lays out the case for music and child intellectual development. Readers, and especially young moms and dads, will find her presentation not only interesting but passionate and provocative. Sit back and get ready for the overture. You won't be disappointed. (Fenwick W. English, R. Wendell Eaves Sr. Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)A superb and necessary book that synthesizes and explains much of what we know about early childhood development and discusses many things we didn't know about the importance of music in early childhood development. The chapters on Bach and ployphony and the importance of complex aural stimulus for brain development are absolutely compelling and entirely convincing. Dr. Shore's book is inspired and must be considered a major contribution to the field. I, for one, am headed to the piano to play through my Bach Preludes and Fugues, flushed and inspired anew by the power and depth of this wonderful music. (Robert Greenberg, composer and professor, San Francisco Conservatory of Music)As a practicing pediatrician, I'm delighted to find Dr. Shore's readable, practical book. She is able to take the most complex research on neural networks, the history of music, and child development and weave it into stories that are familiar and accessible. The last chapter, in particular, is filled with age-appropriate tips on stimulating development for young children. A very welcome addition to the shelf of "must have" books on parenting and early childhood education. (Kathi J. Kemper, M.D., M.P.H. Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University and author of The Holistic Pediatrician and Mental Health Naturally)

By Amy Fontaine-Smith This is an excellent book, not just for new mothers, but for everyone. My son is now 16 but when he was younger I believed, as Ms. Shore does, that his mind was developing. In that light I took my colicky baby to museums, symphonies, libraries, and was not always greeted kindly. Many people told me I was "wasting my time" and the baby would "not remember these experiences anyway". This book proves them all wrong with the research of neuroscientists and studies of brain development. Everyone should receive this book in the maternity ward as they begin their journey of motherhood, but so should the rest of us as we share this world with babies who will grow to be our fellow citizens and share and contribute to it. A must read, very important, and fascinating book!

A collection of horror fiction that's both a love letter and a middle finger to the zombie saturation of our culture. It's the backlash to the backlash, as zombies are finally unfashionable enough to be cool again. Inside, you will rehearse end-of-the-world scenarios with the staff of a tourist trap, follow an undead love triangle struggling to survive a tipping point of post-modern, pop-culture references, and enjoy one small apocalypse after another as the living continue to adapt to a new world of the dead, where they'll finally discover who is hungrier. Don't let these poor souls dine in vain. Also includes the irresponsible zombie movie drinking game "Send More Paramedics," which you can play while you read, drink, drive, and die, over and over again.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Stealing Propeller Hats From the Dead is a work that finds success on multiple levels. By Timothy S Potter David James Keaton follows up his first two novels, impressive both, with a collection of zombie tales from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Stealing Propeller Hats From the Dead is a work that finds success on multiple levels. It is a great set of entertaining genre stories that any zombie fan dive into and enjoy one bite at a time, but it is also a deep, well thought out commentary on the history of the subgenre. The individual stories all work, and, even though a few are rather forgettable, comprise an great book with with a few of the finest zombie tales of recent years. The book opens with a foreword by David Tallerman, in which he coins a phrase that well describes the stories that the reader is about plunge into as “Keatonesque pulp-literary goodness”.We’ve all skipped Introductions to books and then lied about having done so. Don’t skip “Introduction: Scare Quotes and Coffin Rides” as Keaton uses a true story of his involvement with zombies as a launching pad for the fiction to follow. Keaton describes visiting the Monroeville Mall where the original Dawn of the Dead was filmed and the backroom pseudo-museum dedicated to the film as a way of celebrating the sale of his novella, “Zee Bee & Bee (a.k.a. propeller hats for the dead)”. It’s just one episode in what must have been, as the content of the book proves, a life full of zombie education.“Greenhorns” is the first piece of fiction in the book and takes zombies in a very different direction. New recruits begin working on the famous crab fishing vessel Gone Fission from the Crab Monsters television program, a show is long since cancelled. Gone Fission is the only craft to survive the finale of the show’s last season. The story is terrifically suspenseful as it tells the true history of the boat from the middle out. While the reader learns about Jake and his current and future on the ship they learn the root of the disaster that wiped out so many ships and resulted in the show’s cancellation. Jake’s ultimate fate is directly related to the beginning of the problems for Crab Masters. “Greenhorns” is a skillfully crafted and entirely entertaining story. The second story in the book is “... And I’ll Scratch Yours (or the one who had none)”, a tale of genetic engineering and how to properly care for one’s severed arm backscratcher. The story has a few callbacks to “Greenhorns” which actually makes “Greenhorns” a better story after the fact. There is something of a parallel to this story and the classic film Gremlins, that I was fully prepared to discuss here, but Keaton goes ahead and discusses it within the story itself. There’s no need to include more of that here, except to say that Gremlins fans will likely quite enjoy this one.“Do the Munster Mash” and “The Doppelganger Radar” do not follow each other in order in the book but are certainly related. Between the two tales there are a rash of dog bites that may or may not be dog bites and a discussion of how people tend to look so much like their pets. These stories are best read in the order in which the appear, but reading them a second time back-to-back is recommended for a more complete reading experience. For an extended riff on dead baby jokes and other repellant and honestly funny comedy, “What’s Worst?” is for you. “The Ball Pit” tells the story of how humankind faced a possible extinction event because of a rogue medication that causes priapism. It’s likely the first time a fictional boner has threatened the future of the world. “The World’s Second Shortest Zombie Story” is fascinating and leaves the reader wondering if they know what really just happened.“Three Ways Without Water” is a story set in the same fictional world as Keaton’s novel Pig Iron. The story was written some time before the novel and presents an interesting challenge in describing how the two works are related. “Three Ways Without Water” includes elements that are scattered throughout the entire novel, which is about 175 to 200 pages longer. It could be considered a prequel, but that doesn’t quite fit that definition correctly. The best explanation of the story is that it’s an early version of a story that would evolve into something much larger and more complex. It’s a great stand-alone short story and a rare glimpse into the creative process. The main course of the book is served up in “Zee Bee & Bee (a.k.a. propeller hats for the dead). It is a novella of good length that serves as an homage to, and a complete deconstruction of, the zombie story. With copious references to just about every significant zombie film ever made, this is the zombie story against which all should be judged going forward. Actors have created a combination bed and breakfast dinner theater-like experience that allows couples to spend a weekend in a rural house fighting off the zombie hordes. If you can have an honestly serious conversation about the Nazi zombie film Shock Waves or argue the spelling and chronology of Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2, or Zombie, you will swallow up this piece in one sitting. There is also a great twist that takes the story to an ending that it’s unlikely readers will see coming. “Zee Bee & Bee (a.k.a. propeller hats for the dead)” is a crown jewel to this collection of stellar fiction.Readers new to Keaton will find Stealing Propeller Hats From the Dead a smart and fun entry point to the author’s work. Pig Iron and The Last Projector are both excellent novels, but are both very challenging reads. Challenging in the best way, as they experiment with the most basic elements of narrative storytelling, taking old ideas in very new directions. Keaton does not shy away from the bizarre, nonlinear, and, most notably, the unapologetically anarchistic in his novels. He does the same, to a lesser extent, here. These stories are easier to understand than his previous books, but they do introduce the author’s unique style and do not pander to the reader. The collection ends with the rules to a great zombie movie drinking game that you must absolutely never, ever consider playing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Undead World of Opportunities! By Liam Sweeny I'm a fan of David James Keaton, having read all of his previous works, and though at times bewildered, I was never disappointed. Same holds true with this book. What I like about the stories in this collection is that it starts with each zombie apocalypse in its rearview. The stories live in the apocalypse, swim in it, bathe in it. Entrepreneurs selling dismembered undead hands as back-scratchers, a macabre B&B - a cottage industry of putrescence. Keaton has such an ability to find not only the B-side of life, but the C- and D-sides as well. This is definitely worth a pickup.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. " Both of these stories reminded me of something that could easily translate to film in a "Tales from the Crypt" ... By F. Fischer, IV This collection is worth the price for "The Ball Pit" alone. Think "Who Can Kill a Child?" but the kiddos did get off the island and go full zombie on the rest of the world. How in the hell would you deal with that kind of mess? Well, David James Keaton knows how to handle such things, so pay attention. He just might save your life.Equal parts humor and horror, you can't really go wrong with anything printed in this book. And Keaton knows his zombies. There is an encyclopedic knowledge of zombie films, and horror films in general on display in this thing. Just check out "Zee Bee & Bee" and you'll know precisely what I'm talking about.A few other favorites are "...And I'll Scratch Yours (or the One Who Had None)" and "Greenhorns." Both of these stories reminded me of something that could easily translate to film in a "Tales from the Crypt" kind of anthology. Imagine if we still had a show like that with episodes written by the likes of David James Keaton, and Adam Cesare. Jeez. The possibilities! Oh well, maybe one day. In the meantime, you should check this sucker out. I think you'll like it.
