Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Irvin Shrewsbury Cobb, ‘Sundry Accounts.’ “There was a house in this town where always by night lights burned. In one of its rooms many lights burned; in each of the other rooms at least one light. It stood on Clay Street, on a treeless plot among flower beds, a small dull-looking house; and when late on dark nights all the other houses on Clay Street were solid blockings lifting from the lesser blackness of their background, the lights in this house patterned its windows with squares of brilliancy so that it suggested a grid set on edge before hot flames. Once a newcomer to the town, a transient guest at Mrs. Otterbuck’s boarding house, spoke about it to old Squire Jonas, who lived next door to where the lights blazed of nights, and the answer he got makes a fitting enough binning for this account.” Cobb is remembered best for his humorous stories of Kentucky and is part of the American literary regionalism school. These stories were collected first in the book Old Judge Priest (1915), whose title character was based on a prominent West Kentucky judge named William Pitman Bishop. Writer Joel Harris wrote of these tales, “Cobb created a South peopled with honorable citizens, charming eccentrics, and loyal, subservient blacks, but at their best the Judge Priest stories are dramatic and compelling, using a wealth of precisely rendered detail to evoke a powerful mood."Among his other books are the humorous Speaking of Operations (1916), and anti-prohibition ode to bourbon, Red Likker (1929).

The sassy heroine of Sleeping with Paris is back! And this time, chocolate-covered French wedding bells are in the air....

It’s only been a month since Charlotte Summers reunited with her sexy French boyfriend, Luc Olivier, and the two lovebirds have already decided to take the plunge into wedded bliss. Charlotte is madly in love, and Luc is clearly the one, so what could possibly go wrong?

As it turns out, quite a lot...

On the heels of their drama-filled nuptials in the French Alps, Luc whisks Charlotte away to Paris for a luxurious honeymoon. But just as they are recovering from their mad dash to the altar, a surprise appearance by Luc’s drop-dead gorgeous ex-wife brings the festivities to a halt. Luc never told Charlotte that his ex was a famous French actress, or that she was still in love with him.

Determined to keep her independence and her sanity, Charlotte begins writing a book entitled The Girl’s Guide to Tying the French Knot. With chocolate, French wine, and fabulous girlfriends by her side, Charlotte navigates the tricky waters of marriage, secrets, ex-wives, and career all in a foreign country where, she quickly realizes, she never truly learned the rules.

By Simona Elena *Book received by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*This is the first Juliette Sobanet book I’ve read and I’m glad I did, because she’s a great writer. I’ve heard so many great things about her books and then when I saw an open tour for Honeymoon in Paris I grabbed the chance and signed up.So here we are, this book is actually the sequel to Sleeping With Paris, but you can also read it as a stand alone, I did as well and there is enough information for us to get into the story and of what happened before.Charlotte is a lovely character and I liked that the fact the she’s an American in Paris, Lyon (France) teaching English and French.Paris is an amazing city and it’s great reading about The city of Lights in books.Charlotte is on her honeymoon with Luc her husband. He planned amazing things, but then everything turns upside down. Luc’s ex-wife and the mother of his cute daughter Adeline Brigitte comes into the picture. She’s a famous actress and dating Vincent Boucher. Vincent is the father of Nicholas and Marcel (two French actors) and he was also married to Luc’s mother (after his father ended up in prison). There is also the fact that Luc has a lot of secrets and he doesn’t want Charlotte to know the truth. Then he suddenly leaves Paris, because Adeline is sick in Lyon. Charlotte spends her last night in Paris with her two best friends Lexi and Fiona and they end up with the Boucher brothers. They next morning they remember nothing and it gets worse it’s all over the tabloids. Of course Luc and also their boyfriends find out. Back home the drama increases, Char loses her job and has to look for a new one. She doesn’t tell Luc. It’s also that her new job is at Bella Magazine in Lyon with Victor Boucher.Char is determined to find out what Luc is not telling her, she knows it’s all connected with Brigitte, Victor and his sons. Luc still isn’t saying a word and exactly knows how to make Char forget everything. These two are made for each other, that was clear from the start. I didn’t Luc being so secretive all the time though. The story is full of drama, mystery and love.I loved the scene where Charlotte tried to cheer Adeline up with the penguin story, that was so adorable.Char took matters into her own hands, trying to find out what was going on. The drama increases dramatically and there is even some danger.Lexi and Fiona have their own story developed in this book and I liked the three girls together, real friends.Only at the end, when all the drama is solved, Luc tells everyone the truth…I couldn’t put the book down. It was dramatic, myserious and still sweet and, gripping and adorable. Sme things were a little over the top for me, so I can only give 4 coffee cups, it’s still a great book!

Loves, lies, chocolates and great story line surprises By FrenchVillageDiaries Charlotte Summers, the heroine of the delicious chick lit novel Sleeping with Paris (A Paris Romance) is back and has been whisked down the aisle and married her Half-Naked French Hottie, Luc. We join them enjoying the life of luxury on honeymoon in Paris before they return to Lyon to take up teaching positions and settle into married life. However all is not the wedded bliss she thought it would be as she begins to discover secrets Luc has kept from her, including the identity of his ex-wife and Mother of his four-year-old daughter. She realises she doesn't actually know much about Luc's past and at each turn she seems to bump into high-profile, shady characters Luc is unwilling to discuss with her. Having led her best friends into a scandal and desperate for answers to put things right, she is left to turn detective alone. Has Charlotte just made the biggest mistake of her life? Is her new husband all she thought he was? Is her new life going to be at all how she thought it would be?Anyone who has read any of Juliette's other novels will recognise her unique style, her mouth-watering pastry descriptions and fun twists, turns and surprises. There were times when Charlottes over-explaining of her reasons annoyed me a little, but this was just a minor niggle in an otherwise exciting novel that had some nail-biting moments. It was lovely to be back in one of Juliette's novels and yet again she leaves me wanting a visit to Lyon, complete with chocolate croissants, chocolate fondant and chocolates. Although I recommend reading Sleeping with Paris (A Paris Romance) it isn't necessary to have read it to enjoy this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. C'est magnifique! By Melanie King It was great to connect with Charlotte and Luc again. I love Juliette's writing style and she swept me into the story from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. The settings in Paris and Lyon are skillfully weaved into the storyline so you don't feel like you're reading a travel brochure. Will we see another book with Charlotte and Luc? I don't know but I'd be at the head of the line to get a copy should there be.

A Voyage to the Moon By Steven Davis Joseph Atterley of New York, finding himself in the doldrums after the death of his wife, resolves in 1822 to undertake a sea voyage to the Far East on one of his father's merchant ships. In the Indian Ocean the ship is caught by a mighty cyclone and driven ashore somewhere in the Burmese Empire. Mistaking the Americans for their enemies the British, the Burmese take Atterley and the crew captive. Atterley is eventually placed under rather loose house arrest, which allows him to meet and befriend a reclusive Indian Brahman who lives in the nearby hills. One day the Brahman reveals an astonishing secret: he knows how to build a machine to fly to the moon, and has already been there and back twice.George Tucker was a Bermuda-born Virginian, a former Congressman, a friend of Thomas Jefferson and professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Virginia. In addition to A Voyage to the Moon he would publish a number of books on history, biography, economics and political philosophy. Ever since Utopia and Gulliver's Travels, the "fantastic voyage" genre had been a popular vehicle for political and social satire, as well as for Utopian conjectures. Tucker would cleverly use his lunar civilization to both satirize American culture and public life and to propose an ideal society. The moon vehicle Atterley and the Indian construct is a cube made of copper and reinforced against the vaccuum of space with iron bars. Its source of motive power is a metal discovered by the Brahman which, which separated from other ores, repels the gravitational force of the earth. He calls it lunarium because it is attracted to the moon to the same degree that it is repelled by the earth. The Indian has also discovered that lead has opposite properties, being repelled by the moon just as strongly as it is attracted to the earth. They bolt large plates and smaller spheres of these two element to the outside of their spacecraft in such a way that they can be released individually by a screw mechanism from inside the cabin. Dropping some of the lead allows to craft to ascend from the earth, and the attractive powers of lunarium automatically steers it toward the moon. When approaching the moon, the pilot drops lunarium so that his descent can be slowed by the remaining lead. The trip takes several days, so they carry compressed air in spherical tanks affixed to the outside of the craft.Tucker's spacecraft design is imminently practical, and would no doubt be workable if there were such a thing as lunarium. (The idea would be revisited decades later by H. G. Wells in The First Men in the Moon.) Likewise his description of the how the ascent path is affected by the earth's rotation, how the earth would look from space and from the moon's surface, and the effects of lower gravity on the moon are all completely accurate. In political matters the author's prescience is even more uncanny. He predicts that the United States would eventually span the North American continent, whereas the nations of South America would remain disunited and weakened by civil wars. He projects a population for the country in the early 21st century of "three or four hundred millions" with a declining birth rate, and said at that time the U.S. would be the most powerful nation on earth with Russia as its chief rival. The people that Atterley and the Brahman find on the moon are of our own species. This is because the moon was once part of the earth, it's separation leading to the formation of the Pacific Ocean. (This is a theory which some scientists still hold, but of course it would have happened long before the appearance of life on earth.)For the most part the lunarians are ridiculous people whose customs lampoon the fashions and political excesses of Tucker's native land. Some women, for example, dress completely in feathers, while others wear caged butterflies on their heads. The more daring and shapely moon maids wear dresses in which "were inserted glasses like watch crystals, adapted to the form and size of the female bosom." Religious sects eat only the worst part of plants and animals and think it superior to descend stairs by walking backwards. But there is one isolated community in one of the moon's circular valleys (craters) where everything has been designed for the best. Democracy is practiced without demagoguery, trade flourishes without poverty, each man and woman is educated at public expense to his or her full potential, religion has no place in public life, and criminals are reeducated rather than punished. One of the keys to this paradise is that the citizens have calculated exactly how many people their valley can optimally support, and have found the means to keep their population at that level. Atterley wonders how the lunarians can restrain the natural growth in population. The Brahman hints at birth control and says it is already secretly practiced in Asia, but in the United States it "might do more harm than good to be made public, by removing one of the checks of licentiousness, where women are so unrestrained as they are with you."As an adventure story, A Voyage to the Moon lacks suspense. Its satire is amusing at times, but not exceptional in any way. Tucker's utopian society is intriguing, chiefly for its pragmatism, but this is only a small portion of the novel. What I found most appealing about the novel was how astutely the author managed to foresee the future and to view his own world and his own culture as an outsider. The author also comes across as an affable, ingenious, iconoclastic and practical sort of man it would be a delight to know in person. I suspect there is a lot of Tucker's late friend and neighbor Thomas Jefferson in this novel.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A "Utopia" Plot with a very American Cast By Peter G. Markiewicz If you remember this book was published in 1825 (before there were significant railroads in the US, much less the high tech of a moonshot) you'll be ok. The moon-ship is pressurized, and steerable, but flies via an antigravity material similar to the "unobtanium" in Avatar or the "cavorite" in H.G. Wells' First Men in The Moon. The story follows standard "Utopia" style dating from Moore's original Utopia. It is a study of culture more than the impact of technology. To this point - the moon-people are really close cousins of Earth. The author uses a popular theory at the time - that the moon "pinched off" the earth early in its history via electrical interactions in the crust. This explains the, very human inhabitants, who are related to some Asian cultures. Most of the story is devoted to behavior of Americans in the 1820s, satirized by using various Moon people and nations as a descriptive tool. Various tribe of Moon people act like America gone to excess. What struck me was how "American" the ideals in the writing now. Tucker, a progressive, admires the same things we do in the American spirit today, though he also thought they could go to excess. Religion, constant new inventions and tech, strange family rituals all seem about the USA. His foil, a guru from India on the moon voyage with the hero, provides a foil. The novel structure is a bit dated - if you've never read anything before the 20th century, you may initially find the plot over-emphasizing some details at the expense of others.A good example of America Utopian writing with a bit of space travel built in. Later writers, e.g. Jules Verne, Percy Greg, and H.G. Wells may have been aware of this book - some similar devices are used, especially by Greg in "Across the Zodiac"

This quirky and fast moving romance revolves around passionate lovers in tangled and mostly unfulfilling relationships. The tale is complete with hot housewives, rock musicians, exotic dancers, motorcycles, steamy nail polish-melting love scenes, hard drinking college professors, hybrid alien children, a romantic bug exterminator, girl fights, a New Year’s Eve brawl, religious zealotry, prophecies (The Temple of Just DOET)—and more. Ultimately, Love in the RV Park is about the male perception (misperception?) of the female psyche—and the novel attempts to answer an age-old question: What do women want? Laugh or cry—you’ll come away enlightened after reading this zany romance.

I recognize myself and others in the characters in and around the RV park; the social commentary is biting but not so acidic as to sting too much. My favorite character is Old Sol, who drinks too much and waxes poetically about men, women, America, beer, and love. One of my favorite quotes by Sol: "Why are there so many beer commercials? People would buy beer anyway." Truer words have never been uttered. I also chose the perfect time to read the novel as it takes place around Christmas and New Years (and the New Year's Eve party at the RV park is not one to miss). If you enjoy satire, and even if you've never lived in an RV park, you'll enjoy this romantic romp through Americana.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Recommended read By Allison N. Olsen In a culture saturated with telling women what they want, this author refrains. Ross illustrates in satirical fashion that a woman does, indeed, know exactly what she wants. And if she does not, that's okay. She'll figure it out for herself.

"A child's toy consumed my life."The kid went up this kicker--which, if you are not a skateboarder, is an incline or decline you go up or down--launched in the air (the board staying under him), and landed on top of a four-foot tall railing just ahead of the kicker, glided along it, then finally dropped off and landed down on the cement. Perfectly."It was love at first sight."Lo and behold, I became a skater. . . ."Carl Klitz is an amateur local skateboarder in South Florida. Since he was nine years old, he's struggled to find a way to "make it" in the harsh world of the skate industry. When he discovers friends that could possibly get him there, he finds himself in an even harsher world: the taxing festivities of getting kicked out of spot after spot, the challenging, undertaking superiorness of other skateboarders seeking the same purpose of exposure, and the tedious, agonizingly painful attempts of landing tricks for hours on end. Yet upon arrival of the sizable premier of his final skate video, Carl has the epiphany he's been looking for--is the skate world really what it appears to be, or is all of this a journey to find his sense of self and friendships?⠀⠀⠀A surprising story of youth, growing-up, and learning life's trials, Skateboy is a fiendishly insightful, eye-opening novel from one of the most provoactive of urban writers.

Skateboy: A Novel, by Kevin Klix

From the Author Excerpt from Introduction/Author's Note © by Kevin KlixThe skateboarding industry is made up of millions. This surprises most people that aren't involved in the skate world, and that's okay--most of what we skaters call "non-skaters" don't understand the concept of trying trick after trick for hours on end just to get maybe three seconds of footage for a video that may or may not happen. That's the point of the skate industry: You skate, try tricks, and if they are good you gain a sense of status. Then people in the industry "know you." YouTube is huge for the skate community because you can find skaters doing the most insane things and getting recognition. That's how people get noticed and sponsored. The skate industry is poppin'! You'll feel accomplished!⠀⠀⠀⠀Now, I've never wrote an introduction to my own book before because I think it's egotistical, but I wrote this to tell you first-hand I wanted to make a novel that showcased the world of skateboarding in a new light. There isn't a single book that shows what it is really like to be a skateboarder. It's hell! You have to prove to people that you don't like that you're worthy of this status. It's a mess, and I have to say, it's sad. I see that now, but that's what skateboarding is all about. You chase the status because you are chasing recognition. In many ways, that's how skateboarders get so hung up on skateboarding and landing the best tricks, because it's simply an artist at their craft, looking for an audience for which to showcase their work. That's what it's all about. And that's why skateboarders make skate videos and work so hard on them. It's an art form.⠀⠀⠀⠀I guess you could say I fell into skateboarding because I'm very much an attention-seeker. This idea is sort of ingrained in our heads as skateboarders. It's honestly a joke to want to care so much about what people think of your skateboarding. That status and that insatiable need for attention on my own art, has transcended into my adulthood and caused me great sorrow in the process. You can apply that hunt for attention into every aspect of our lives. This is the new millennium of people trying to "make it big," and skateboarding is no exception. I have no idea what it is, but showcasing artwork as been so heavy in my psyche that it makes me nauseous.⠀⠀⠀⠀In most cases, this novel also shows the lifestyle of the skateboarding industry. Most skaters are scumbags because we find humor in the idea of being a scumbag. That's just the way skateboarding is. We trash-talk, we treat people like crap, and we are genuinely awful. That was a part of growing up, being a kid, and being influenced by skateboarders that are total scum. Everyone does it, and when you see something often enough, you tend to get desensitized by the scumminess, and then you become it. That's what the main character in this novel goes through.⠀⠀⠀⠀Carl Klitz is the main character and is happily my alter ego. This is a semi-autobiographical novel, but is loosely based on real events. I can still say it's fiction because this is a span of a decade into a person's life, so it's rightfully impossible to showcase every little detail of said life. Regardless, I still say that this life Carl leads is not the least bit interesting.⠀⠀⠀⠀I know what you're thinking: "This author-guy is stating that this is a semi-autobiographical novel about skateboarding and he says it's not interesting?" Yes, I'll say that over and over! This book consists of nothing but pure, petty bullcrap. That's just what it is. That is the point of the book. There are so many characters in this book, so many different outlooks and sayings and actions that they all seem to blur together. That's another point of the book. I'm also showcasing life.⠀⠀⠀⠀In life, whether you're a skateboarder, lawyer, YouTuber, cop, mom or dad, you have the things you care about. The problem with Carl is that his cares in life are all over the place, and he just happens to fall into skateboarding rather than truly wanting to. Everything Carl does is influenced by others for the simple purpose of "fitting in." For me, this novel is a complete exploration of my sense of self. I wanted to make a roadmap for myself and to see where my thoughts came from, why I reacted the way I did, and what I can come up with in the present moment.⠀⠀⠀⠀With this all in mind, it's hard to say I had any opinion in these scenes during the times when I was living them. I was a child, a teenager, and I was just living. I had no real opinion, and for this, there is barely any commentary or opinion on subject--only rarely. The book can read monotonous if you are a "non-skater," but if you have known what it's like to be a skateboarder, been in high school, have had relationships, or have problems, then skateboarding isn't the main plot in the story--it's just a conduit for something larger.⠀⠀⠀⠀There is no set plot when it comes to real life, in my opinion. The events in these upcoming pages lead into each other from prior events, questioning the ideologies of Determinism through Carl's life. This is, by proxy, how Carl becomes so frustrated and out of control. He felt ultimately nothing because he is just living in the monotonous lifestyle, wondering if he was truly in control. That is the point of reading the book.⠀⠀⠀⠀This novel is basically not just for publication reasons or for personal financial gain, because I do not anticipate it being a best seller (upon writing this). It's a dark book with many different backdrops, and for me this is a novel that is for the people that are characters based in the story, and for me to understand more about who I am. That's also another reason I wrote this garbage.⠀⠀⠀⠀I feel bad if you consider reading this, because you probably will not like Carl in the slightest: he's self-inflicted, crass, angry, sad, annoying, silly, funny, depressing, and he can really frustrate you sometimes. This is actually how I am in real life, but obviously I've grown since these phases. There are moments when Carl is a very heartfelt creature, but it's all ties into the realism of the book, so if Carl offends you, I wholeheartedly apologize--I'm just trying to showcase something real. He very much contradicts himself in each chapter, and it's very hard to understand what he's thinking and feeling. That's also your mission to figure out if you plan to read this cover-to-cover. I am giving you fair warning, and that's my reasoning for this introduction.⠀⠀⠀⠀I also want to say that, while the characters in this book are based on real people, all of their names have been changed--their looks, actions, and everything else--to protect said people from any embarrassment or praise caused in this book. I care a lot about the individuals in this book, and I harbor absolutely no feelings of hatred toward them. On the contrary, if they find themselves in this book, they are actually important to Carl and his growth as a fictional character.⠀⠀⠀⠀This was no easy book to write . . . I must say. I actually cried upon its completion because a lot of this book shows darker meanings behind my own sorrows, and it is clear that Carl is a very troubled individual dealing with loads of baggage and mental issues.-...This text is incomplete and is in the final edition of this title.

By Janet Foster Okay, I'm new to the world of Amazon and this is my Grandma's account so allow me to "introduce" myself. The name's Courtnie- I just recently started my first term of college & like others my age I am learning how to balance fulltime school and work while struggling to find time for homework and sleep. The only thing that may make the previous statement interesting is that I am doing all of these things while dealing with severe depression, anxiety, and even self-harm issues. To be honest, when I first started reading Skateboy, I was worried that it was going to talk about nothing but skateboarding. I couldn't have been more wrong. I read this book in one very short evening. I was hooked. Skateboy not only relates to the many challenges and obstacles of young adulthood, but also deals with some of our darker, and very real experiences. This book was unlike anything I'd ever read before. In today's world, everyone seems to be so worried about offending others and live as if everything is okay when they're really not. Kevin Klix's main character for this book is a teenage boy named Carl; Klix has an incredible ability to keep his character's reactions and repercussions to their experiences 100% realistic, no matter how raw that reality is. This kind of honesty is something that I personally crave due to its lack of existence in today's society. I'm not usually much of a reader but I truly feel that this book will reach out and touch so many lives- regardless of age, gender, mental state, etc.

Unapologetically heartfelt and honest and it just felt so real! I could smell the damp Florida air and the teen angst and the freedom and folly of alternatingly passionate and apathetic youth. If you are human and or care about being human you'll love this book. Don't take my word for it, read it.
