It was fun and had it's share of cuteness. It was different which I liked as well. While it was a short story, I think the author could perhaps write more into this story with the characters. They were fun and I loved the parrot. I would definitely like to hear more from Gary Alan Ruse as I think he's an especially good author.Nicholas Patrella did a terrific job narrating this audiobook. He's amazing with his voice inflections. I was able to distinguish who was speaking the whole time because of his awesome vocal skills. Impressive.Overall, I think it comes down to whether you like pirate stories or pirate lore. This story is a work of fiction though. Great job."This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com."

Former hippie Gordo McCain suffers a brain aneurysm in 2015 and awakens after surgery with retrograde amnesia. He can't remember a thing past the year 1969. He doesn't recognize his wife and family. He doesn't even recognize his own name because people aren't calling him Gordo McCain anymore but instead Robert Hurlbut. He discovers that he's been living under an assumed name for more than forty years and is now the last fugitive member of the radical underground group Stormfront. At first he tries to keep his head low and continue living as Robert Hurlbut. But when it becomes clear that, over the years, he'd become a conformist and "sell-out," Gordo is disgusted with himself. He trades his new Jaguar for a vintage VW bus, paints it in psychedelia, and hits the road to find an old lover, to find the truth about his allegedly violent past, and to find himself, existentially speaking. Along for the ride is his 15 year-old granddaughter, Emily Hurlbut, an alienated Goth and the only member of the family Gordo can relate to. Meanwhile, the FBI cold case unit picks up his trail ... Instant Karma is a comedic novella. It skewers the 1960s as well as America in the 21st century. Buy it today then "turn on, tune in, and drop out" for a few hours.

If it is written reasonably well, how could it not be? For fans of music of the era, you'll find subtle references from the John Lennon inspired title to a Grateful Dead reference near the end, and plenty more in between. And while the character of Gordo is a bit cartoonish (not inappropriate for satire), he's a likeable guy and the plot has more than enough conflict for a novella-length story to keep me plenty interested in where it was going. I especially liked the relationship that developed between Gordo and his granddaughter, Emily, who could be viewed as her generation's equivalent to Gordo, in that she's a bit of a non-traditional non-conformist who likes to test limits. Now the not-good-for-me. This goes strictly to personal taste and you may feel differently. Hopefully I'll get the terminology correct. The book is narrated in third person (a narrator who isn't a character, but sees all). This kind of narration is hard to pull off without errors, but the author dodged them here (or I missed them). It's also written in present tense. I'm not a fan of either of these, especially the second one. A double dose is worse. However, as I mentioned above, not everyone is going to react the same to this and both are valid writing styles.**Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. Robert Hurlbut, a petroleum drilling engineer in his late 60s, suffers an aneurysm at work, and wakes up in hospital. Surgery has saved him, but he’s lost his memory. He tells everyone he isn’t Robert Hurlbut, but Gordo McCain, a hippie activist in his 20s, and his memory is frozen in 1969. His family despair as he adopts Woodstock-era clothes and argot. But Gordo has an unpleasant surprise in store. The Hurlbut identity was a disguise. Gordo McCain was a member of the radical underground, and is still wanted for the firebombing of a Federal building. In fact, he has been on the run for over 40 years. To try and get to the bottom of all this, Gordo takes off across America to find his 1969 lover, Saffron. He does this in an old VW Kombi van that he has painted with flowers. He takes the one person who seems to understand him – his granddaughter Emily, a 15-year-old Goth, who has just been thrown out of school. Meanwhile, the FBI are surprised to find that Gordo McCain has surfaced. And they still want him.I rather liked this novella. The end is a bit sudden and doesn’t quite work as well as it should – and I also wondered if Christopherson could have done more with the story, especially from the thriller angle. I’m also not too keen on the use of the present tense to tell the story. Even so, Instant Karma is entertaining. The whole thing is a bit wacky, but it sort of works because Christopherson has a deadpan, matter-of-fact writing style that gives it all an odd credibility. Gordo and Emily are sympathetic, and things keep moving along at the right speed. Also, every now and then, it’s very funny. There’s a priceless scene in an Austin restaurant, when Gordo organizes a protest in support of breastfeeding mothers, and Emily summons a flashmob in support, using her iPhone. In fact there were a few points in this novella where I found myself chortling out loud.Despite some flaws, Instant Karma is fun and I do recommend it. Christopherson has written several full-length thrillers and I wouldn’t mind giving them a try.

A baby boomer has a medical problem that causes his memory to freeze at 1969. He was a radical hippie who may have blown up a building and is wanted by the FBI unbeknownst to his wife and Goth granddaughter. So now he’s reverted to his hippie ways and everything is groovy as he decides to search for his former hippie girlfriend, Saffron. I thought the novella was too short at 65 pages and the writing too concise. The could've been a full length novel. Otherwise a fun groovy story. I also like the cover.~

An exceptionally crafted novel By Erika Lund Filled with dark humor-- and, at times, just plain darkness-- "The Queen and I" is a haunting novel of exceptional craft. Unique, and wholly engrossing, it is one of those terrific books you can't put down-- and want to read all-over-again when it's over.

By Becca How much do you want to be famous? “I really, really want it” by Richard Hennerley is an irreverent look at celebrity life. It explores the dysfunctional world of fame and celebrities, and the imperfect world in which we all live. Anyone that is interested in reading about human nature will enjoy this book. It is ironic how we tend to idolize the lifestyles of the famous, as the truth is often so far removed from the fantasy we've created. It's a well-written and thought-provoking read. It will take an average reader about 4 ½ hours to finish reading. Plan ahead. You will not want to put it down! This book is insightful, intelligent, and vibrantly engaging. Highly recommended.

A delightful ride and memorable characters By January Gray I would tell you to curl up with this book and your favorite beverage, but this wonderful book holds an edge of your seat tale you will not be able to put down, and you will be astonished to find you finished your whole bottle of wine! DO NOT pick up this book until you have a few hours to give to nothing but reading. Celebrity, glitz, glam and...murder. I love when an author like this comes along and gives me a character I want to meet in real life. Yes, I am dying to have drinks with Andrew Manning. This book is a delightful ride and I look forward to reading more by Richard Hennerley! "There, now you know a little bit more about me, as long as I'm telling the truth, that is. Believe me. Don't believe me. I would say that we meet up over drinks one night so that you could tell me a bit about yourself, except hat I already know all about you..." -Andrew Manning (Reviewed for AuthorAmp. By Gaele I’m still of two minds about this title: clever prose that is so bitingly ironic and dark with a protagonist that, to this point, I still don’t know if he was simply playing a part of what he thought was expected of him, or if he was really that enmeshed in the game.Hennerley has penned a dark and occasionally gruesome tale about the quest for celebrity, and the reality that is behind the façade. The most relevant question is, how badly do you want it?And the people in this book really want it… like that deep down childhood refrain that your life will be over if you don’t get that ONE thing. And, aside from some pretty horrific behaviors, most of the characters in this story are childlike: refusing to see consequences, or even care about them, each character brings a core of selfish, self-aggrandizement: they are so wonderful because they WILL it so, and the tabloids feature them. Most unusual is Andrew – the king-maker or breaker who repackages and totes out the wanna-bes, the has beens and the marginally relevant. Honestly – think Seacrest without the obsequious personality: Andrew doesn’t really care what you think about him. Or, if he does, he knows that he can spin things to change your opinion. Years in the business, he has wealth, power and a certain caché that, while oily and greasy is the one thing that keep people bowing and scraping: he knows where the bodies are buried. His approach is part Machiavellian, part puppeteer and part politician: talking out of both sides of his mouth. And, people will go far to get Andrew’s assistance and that boost in name recognition: eliminating competition and threats, and a psycho who is hearing voices telling him to kill the famous, this is a fast-paced twisty turny story that will leave you breathless. Be aware that there are gruesome and gory scenes; personally I think that they were fitting but could have been cleaned up some as the story and race to the end is that good. An interesting skewering of celebrity culture with a look in from behind the curtain.I received an eBook copy of the title from the publisher for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world.
