The endearingly hilarious tale about a young Gnome who strikes out on his own!

Gappy Whirligig is an industrious Gnome who has yet to reach the Age of Tinkering. He's 42. But, as anyone who lives in the Gnome town of Hubintegler can tell you, things have a way of exploding when least expected. In a flash, Gappy's life flips upside down, leaving him to make the decision to either strike out on his own or become a 42-year-old foster child. Gappy demonstrates his industrious spirit as he leaves Hubintegler's rules and regulations behind and instead seeks to make his mark in the seedy town of Planoontik. Along with his Orc assistant, Shrit, Gappy fights through the red tape of starting a business, running a business, dealing with the local Halfia (the Halfling Mafia), and battling the competition. The land of Ononokin gets its influence as a hodgepodge from Monty Python, National Lampoon, Family Guy, Terry Pratchett, Discworld, Robert Asprin, Myth Adventures, Piers Anthony, Xanth, Douglas Adams, Harry Harrison, and countless other comedic mediums. Readers will find a new, fun, comedic fantasy world to play in. Wizards, magic, Dwarfs, Orcs, Ogres, Trolls, Gnomes, Halflings, Vampires, Zombies, Dragons, Gorgans, and more fill the vastness of Ononokin.

The main character, Gappy Whirligig, is a likeable industrious young Gnome who sets out to accomplish his life’s dream. There are also many other great characters in this story. This is light comedy fantasy and is not epic or high fantasy, it is more like Pratchett than Tolkien.

By Amazon Customer Gappy's Gadgets is pure laugh-out-loud fun!  The characters are unique and engaging.  The plot is fast-paced and entertaining.  And the comedy is hilarious.  I couldn't put it down -- I finished the book in one sitting.  (As a caution to other readers, I must warn you that if you stay up till 3:00am reading this book as I did, you may find yourself kicked out of the bedroom by a sleepy spouse who does not understand what could possibly be so funny in the middle of the night.  Rest assured, this book is worth annoying your spouse over -- it's that funny). I loved the way Logson and Young created such laughable, lovable, relatable characters -- even their villains.  I also loved the way they combined the absurd with the mundane to create humor.  These two talented writers definitely know how to delight readers.I hope that Logson and Young plan to write more Ononokin books (4 is not enough!) because I will be eagerly waiting to read them.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it.

An enjoyable ride through a rather strange yet familiar world By murphyfields Disclaimer: I was given a draft copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed it enough that I bought the released version just to see how things changed. I am a geek who likes those sorts of things. This is a fun book and a joy to read. Great character development. Several laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of giggles. My only complaint is that I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen early on in the book, and that kept away the tension I like to feel when a character I love is in danger. Of course (*spoiler alert*) the hero will win and the villain will lose, but I want to have just a few moments of doubt. That lowered my rating from 5 stars to 4.Overall, the fantasy world is well developed, and there were many times where I was introduced to a new character and thought "I have met this person" even though the character might be an orc or a troll.

These adult fairy tales are contemporary, smart and very clever; Jason Antoon has tapped into our vanities, insecurities and obsessions, and transformed them into stories for the modern age. One cannot help but smile while reading these tales, yet each has a sobering ring of truth to it. The author has a fresh, witty voice, and this collection is a delightful read!

My fav was The Americn Flag Blanket and the title story but I actually liked them all. Would be cool as a Netflix series to bookend Black Mirror.

By Scott Although one might venture to say that a lot has been written about MIB's ... in book form - I'm here to tell you, reader, that if you haven't read Nick Redfern - you don't know very much about Men In Black. The man does his research, and has that rare ability to relay said research onto paper in such fashion as to raise the hackles of even veterans of the phenomenon, and for those who may be new, you're in for the read of your life if this subject matter interests you - as it probably does if you're reading this review. I will only state further, that if this is your first taste of Redfern - then ALL of his books are a MUST READ ... everyone of them. 5 HUGE Stars - the guy doesn't let up. Read it, absorb it, and watch your back! Then decide if your world view hasn't derailed once you've read his work(s)!! We are fortunate to have Nick in our midst - and writing for us!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. THIS BOOK SCARED ME By FROM TEXAS, NOT CRAZY This book scared the bejeezus out of me. I had not only never fully understood the Men in Black phenom and was further introduced to the Black-Eyed Children and the Grinning Cowboy. I suddenly understood a bunch of characters I had seen in David Lynch movies. As Redfern suggests, Men in Black love to play on phones and I experienced their interference shortly after reading the book. I am a complete believer that these entities are about and I have no idea what they want. Seems no one else does either. Fascinating stuff.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Odd Mix... By P Jerome Not as much high strangeness as Nick's last MIB outing, but makes for a good read. Some of the personal stories were very much "out there", sounding more like full-blown psychosis rather than a normal person's encounter with the bizarre. A bit of trimming would have made this a 5-star effort, but no worries, one can never get enough of Mr. Redfern.

On October 16th, 1998, a lone gunman entered Piney Hills High School and murdered thirty-seven people. It was then believed that the assailant took his own life, leaving many unanswered questions but nonetheless bringing a sense of closure to the community. Unfortunately, everyone was mistaken, and the actual gunman escaped both the attack on the school and any form of justice. Now an adult, Robert Higgins, the perpetrator of the worst school shooting in history, has decided to give a tell-all account of how he got away with his crime. Clearly a deeply disturbed individual, he relishes in describing all the stages of his planning and preparation, from obtaining the weapons used, to choosing his victims, to the actual framing of the teenager blamed for his own actions. But the story goes much deeper than that. In his recount, Robert reveals his bizarre inner-thought processes and gives clues as to what his ultimate motives were. Admittedly, Robert is a character that draws little sympathy. His acts are despicable, and as a person, he is unredeemable. Yet, like a horrific traffic accident that one cannot turn away from, his narrative draws the reader in and compels them forward. This is far more than a story of bloodshed; it is a look at how a monster is created and the terrible hatred that drives them to commit such acts of violence. The book offers commentary on the United States' lax gun regulations and other social policies that contribute to the prevalence of mass murders in the country. It also highlights the need for improved screening for and treatment of mental illness, especially among young people. While this is entirely a work of fiction, this novel sadly draws from events that are all too real. The violence depicted is graphic at times, but it is hardly exaggerated from what has been seen in many of the most recent mass-shootings. NO REASON IS REASON ENOUGH is somewhat difficult to categorize as a novel, but falls somewhere between the true-crime and psychological-thriller genres. Fans of Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho" and Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club" will particularly like this book, but it should find an audience with anyone willing to delve into the darker aspects of society.

No Reason Is Reason Enough, by Marc Anderson

About the Author Marc Anderson grew up in Spring, Texas, just outside of Houston. He attended St. Thomas High School, and went on to study biology and biochemistry at the University of Houston. After earning his undergraduate degrees, Marc spent several years bouncing around graduate programs (and a brief stint in vet school), before returning to the University of Houston and earning his Ph.D. in Cell Biology. The mind numbing title of his dissertation was "An Account of Chemical and Mechanical Regulation of TRPC6 Channels in Podocytes." Unfulfilled with conducting hours of research alone in a room without windows, Marc left science to pursue careers in both writing and web-design. Despite some difficulties, he still believes that this was a wise decision. Marc currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his two dogs, Sam and Bruce. He considers himself a pessimistic realist and is a real blast at parties. This is his first attempt at writing a novel.

Dark, disturbing and silently clever By Ajoobacats No Reason is Reason Enough is a psychological thriller, which reads as a genuine memoir of a mass shooter and sociopath, who appears to have got away with a school shooting killing thirty-seven and injuring three. The book is told from this heinous antagonists point of view and although our fictional author claims to be telling us how he did what he did, the why is eloquently conveyed too. Interspersed with the account of his upbringing and the lead up to his plans are quite graphic accounts of what occurred during the shootings told by our narrator.I honesty found reading this dark thriller easy to get into despite the difficult subject matter. If I had been told this was a story about a true crime and not a fictional account of a fictional shooter I would have had no trouble believing this, which is a true testament to author Mark Anderson. Anderson not only wrote a gripping account of a shooter but he cleverly disseminates the apathy and distorted ideas courted by our main character.Disturbing, dark and utterly intriguing, this book was an absolute nail-biting read and I recommend it to those who want a bit of realism and social commentary alongside a gripping story.

This is a collection of fun stories that pokes a little gentle fun at the Watson-esque recorder of the stories (who gets a little swindled on at least one occasion) but combines the fun of the skilled thief who just can't resist making a steal every now and then - but never from someone who can't afford to lose a little - and has a spirit of fair play with the skill of the detective who notices everything. Even if you've only got a passing acquaintance with Holmes, you can enjoy these stories. One note: there are a few uses of period racist language, such as this one when a character is listening to minstrel music:“He’s suffering from a bad attack of coonitis this evening,” I observed to myself.

The Mystery of Life: How Nothing Became Everything, by Jan Paul Schutten

From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up—How old is the Earth, and how was it formed? How did nonliving atoms evolve into single cell organisms and then into the plethora of species that inhabit the Earth today? How did scientists discover the answers to these questions, and how can they provide proof for their theories? Schutten responds to these queries and countless others as he explains the scientific discoveries that led, over time, to the development of theories such as the big bang and evolution. Taking a big picture approach, he puts all the pieces of the puzzle that comprise our complex world into one accessible, entertaining title, using just the right mixture of fun facts, scientific information, and age-appropriate language. Schutten divides his chapters up into subsections that ask specific questions ("What Are Seashells Doing on Top of a Mountain?") and incorporates complex ideas in his responses. He also peppers his text with interesting tidbits of information. For example, we get goose bumps because our ancestors had fur—which, when it stood on end, provided warmth. Schutten is an award-winning author who argues vehemently for evolution but doesn't exclude those who believe in God and creationism; he encourages his readers to think for themselves. Interspersed liberally throughout the text are clear, rather playful illustrations, which add to the lighthearted and humorous tone. VERDICT A great choice for libraries looking to bolster their STEM collection.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn, NY

Review "A lighthearted view of the universe's progress, from the Big Bang to the evolution of bacteria, bonobos—and 'Joe Schmo from Buffalo.'...[Schutten's] overall account of life's origins and tenure is as rich in detail as it is entertaining." (Kirkus Reviews)"Taking a big picture approach, he puts all the pieces of the puzzle that comprise our complex world into one accessible, entertaining title, using just the right mixture of fun facts, scientific information, and age-appropriate language....Interspersed liberally throughout the text are clear, rather playful illustrations, which add to the lighthearted and humorous tone. A great choice for libraries looking to bolster their STEM collection." (School Library Journal)

About the Author Jan Paul Schutten has been writing children's nonfiction books since 2003. A native of The Netherlands, his books are popular and critically acclaimed; he has won several awards including the Gouden Griffel (Golden Stylus) for his book Children of Amsterdam.

The eighty-nine cetacean species that swim our seas and rivers are as diverse as they are intelligent and elusive, from the hundred-foot-long, two-hundred-ton blue whale to the lesser-known tucuxi, ginkgo-toothed beaked whale, and diminutive, critically endangered vaquita. The huge distances these highly migratory creatures cover and the depths they dive mean we catch only the merest glimpses of their lives as they break the surface of the water. But thanks to the marriage of science and technology, we are now beginning to understand their anatomy, complex social structures, extraordinary communication abilities, and behavioral patterns. In this beautifully illustrated guide, renowned marine mammalogist Annalisa Berta draws on the contributions of a pod of fellow whale biologists to present the most comprehensive, authoritative overview ever published of these remarkable aquatic mammals. Opening with an accessible rundown of cetacean biology—including the most recent science on feeding, mating, and communication—Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises then presents species-specific natural history on a range of topics, from anatomy and diet to distribution and conservation status. Each entry also includes original drawings of the species and its key identifiers, such as fin shape and color, tooth shape, and characteristic markings as they would appear both above and below water—a feature unique to this book. Figures of myth and—as the debate over hunting rages on—figures of conflict since long before the days of Moby-Dick, whales, dolphins, and porpoises are also ecologically important and, in many cases, threatened. Written for general enthusiasts, emergent cetacean fans, and biologists alike, this stunning, urgently needed book will serve as the definitive guide for years to come.

Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises: A Natural History and Species GuideFrom University Of Chicago Press

Review “‘I take the good old-fashioned ground that the whale is a fish,’ Ishmael says confidently in Melville’s Moby-Dick. Old-fashioned indeed—whales are mammals, not fish. Thankfully, our scientific understanding of whales has come a long way since 1851, and much of that knowledge is collected in Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises, a sperm whale-sized compendium of all things cetacean.” (Chelsea Leu WIRED)“Did you know that whales are related to cows and early whales had legs? Some whales release a ring of bubbles to corral their prey, and recent research suggests that bowhead whales may live for more than 200 years. Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises, edited by whale biologist Berta, explains the diet, conservation status, and a host of other details for each of the 89 species of cetacea. This guide is a fantastic resource for biologists and aquatic-mammal watchers alike. There is a sequence of illustrations showing what each species looks like above water as it dives.” (Boston Globe)“Entries are brief, accurate, authoritative, and they highlight fascinating features of these animals. This informative and captivating book will be a fine addition to libraries that serve everyone from laypeople to researchers and scientists who are interested in learning more about marine mammalogy, in particular the titular species.” (Tina Chan, SUNY Oswego Library Journal)“[This book] contains many good illustrations of the majority of extant species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises (cetaceans). It also provides a general overview of the systematics and evolution of cetaceans as a group and very brief summaries of anatomy, feeding, life history, range, and conservation issues for each species. Except for the first few dozen pages, the text is not meant to be read continuously, but browsed. In doing so, a reader will gain appreciation for the range of cetacean biology topics and some insight into recent developments in scientific understanding of that biology. Casual readers . . . should enjoy the photographs and drawings if they are curious about whales, dolphins, and porpoises. . . . Recommended.”   (S. R. Fegley, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Choice)“Judged at a glance, this book is an elegant achievement to encapsulate all whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Although there is no shortage of guidebooks that focus on cetacean species, Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises: A Natural History and Species Guide gives homage to the diversity of this taxonomic group through its large page size, ample species-specific illustrations, and efficiently organized authoritative text. . . . This book gathers together the most interesting and pertinent research, alongside the information needed to identify every species, in a spacious and regimented format. This user-friendly directory will satiate any cetacean enthusiast's curiosity about species diversity and distribution; and I can envision that this book will inspire many future whale fans.” (Marine Mammal Science)“A well illustrated reference book . . . to the world’s cetaceans.” (Ian Paulsen Birdbooker Report)

Bille In this superb overview of the cetacean world, Professor Berta marshals a huge collection of solid, up to date information, from whale biology and evolution to feeding techniques to range maps and field marks, with 2-4 page descriptions of 89 known species. The most recent discoveries, such as Daraniyagala's beaked whale, Omura's Whale, the Australian snubfin dolphin, and the narrow-ridged finless porpoise are all here. There are also some intriguing bits for those (like me) who are curious about the number of types yet to be confirmed. A line in the long-finned pilot whale entry, for example (this entry is by Jessica Aschettino, one of 37 named contributors) mentions "G.m. un-named subspecies." The killer whale section (by Robert Pitman) lists the animal as a single species with "at least six distinct ecotypes that may in fact represent different species or subspecies." Uncertainties about the exact delineations of minke whales, Bryde's whale, and others are also mentioned. For those interested in the mysterious, deep-diving beaked whales of the genus Mesoplodon, there are 22 species of beaked whale described in a section written by Randall Reeves. All the species sections are excellent writeups by people who know the animals well. The book is beautiful as well as informative. Photographs and other illustrations are plentiful, well-labeled, and helpful. The text is authoritative but highly readable to the nonexpert like myself. The only quibble I have is with the physical book: the binding feels flimsy and the pages don't lie flat: handle it with care. (OK, there are two quibbles - killer whales deserve more than two pages, and there should be illustrations, at least silhouettes, of the differences between ecotypes).Overall, though, this book is a magnificent achievement and a very useful reference.- Matt Bille, author, Shadows of Existence: Discoveries and Speculations in Zoology (Hancock, 2006)www.mattwriter.com

By lyndonbrecht Not sure I'd call this a guide in the sense you can take it with you, your pants would sag from the weight. As a birder I have a couple of similar guides, and their value is in preparing to go looking for species--that is, if you have a good sense of what species will be in the region at the time you're looking, and if you know some details of color, shape and behavior, you're much more likely to know what you actually see, the book's value is partly in preparation. On the water, the book may be practical depending on the size of the boat. Note that little is known about a number of species, particularly the beaked whales. The first few chapters before the species accounts offer a rather good basic natural history of the animals. I did not know that Cuvier's beaked whale can dive to 1.86 miles down and last 137 minutes in the dive. I was interested at the (brief) account of bubble feeding (essentially bubble corrals enclosing fish, created by cooperation among whales who at the end rush in and dine. I had never heard of Bottle nosed dolphins on muddy bottoms swimming around a school of fish, raising a sort of mud ring suspended in water, much like bubble feeding. The species accounts are excellent. Each has an image, basic information about natural history, ID checklist, food and foraging details, conservation status, anatomy, behaviors and many have life span if known. There are visual keys to behaviors that differentiate species, such as variations in diving and breathing. There are maps (small!) of distribution. Appendices include information on classification, a glossary, resources, etc.

The most up-to-date field guide to cetacean species By Vahe Demirjian There has never been a shortage of field guides to marine mammals, and this book is no exception. It keeps up with slight revisions to cetacean taxonomy by including the newly described humpback dolphin Sousa sahulensis but also the "new" beaked whale Mesoplodon hotaula (which was previously thought to be the same species as the Gingko-Toothed Beaked Whale shortly after it was described in 1963). Ironically, this book doesn't follow the recent proposal to split the Amazon River Dolphins into three species or recognize Tursiops australis as distinct from T. tursiops.

Camping or backpacking in winter is appealing for many who enjoy the serenity of wilderness settings without the crowds and bustle of the summer season. But as rewarding as they can be, these outings require special preparation and a different set of skills than are necessary at other times of the year. Snowfall can quickly cover one's tracks and make orientation difficult. Hypothermia is insidious, and rapidly changing weather conditions can become treacherous, even life-threatening.

In addition to those who are exploring the outdoors recreationally, there are also those who find themselves in unexpected winter survival situations. Each year, people become stranded in wilderness areas, and in most cases they are not equipped to face the challenge of spending an indefinite amount of time outside. Without sufficient gear or knowledge of how to improvise without it, injury or death is often the result. The development of some basic skills, however, can help avert such unfortunate outcomes.

As the founder of the renowned nature awareness program Primitive Pursuits, Dave Hall has been practicing survival skills for more than twenty years and has amassed a comprehensive understanding of winter survival. By refining these skills, Dave has reached a point of understanding that is without peer. Through detailed explanations, illustrations, and personal anecdotes, Winter in the Wilderness imparts Dave's knowledge to readers, who will learn to meet their most basic needs: making fire, creating shelter, obtaining safe drinking water, navigating terrain, and procuring sustenance.

Winter in the Wilderness is a handbook for those who want to explore cold-weather camping and those who might find themselves in need of this critical information during an unexpected winter's night out. Whether used for pleasure or for survival, Winter in the Wilderness emphasizes the benefits of enriching and deepening our connection with the outdoors.

Outstanding Book That Prepares You For Winter Survival By Francis Tapon Before sharing my thoughts of this book, I'll share my background and experience to illustrate my expertise, ignorance, and bias.I've spent many weeks backpacking in the winter or in winter-like conditions. For example, when I did a round-trip on the Continental Divide Trail, I walked across Colorado in May. When you're in the Rocky Mountains in May, it sure looks and feels like winter, even though officially it's spring. The mountains are buried in snow and freezing temperatures are the norm.My most memorable winter trip was a 4-day backpacking trip in Yosemite during Thanksgiving (late November).I've also climbed many snowy peaks, such as nearly all the peaks in Cascade Mountain Range (e.g., Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Mt. Baker, Mt. Adams, etc...), as well as snowy mountains outside the USA, such as Mont Blanc.Despite all these situations, I have only once been in a true winter survival situation. That was in late March 2006 when Maiu and I got lost in the Olympic National Park. We almost died. We spent two nights (one of which snowed on us) in a diabolical ravine. We both ended up with frostbite, but we got out on our own.Another close call was when I was snowshoeing in Idaho for the day with Julia, my Ukrainian girlfriend at the time. We got lost as the sunset and kept walking until we ran into a man running a snowplow at 3:00 a.m. We were walking the wrong way and he took us to back to safety. Therefore, it was with great interest that I read Winter in the Wilderness. Here are the pros, cons, and verdict of the book. What the Winter in the Wilderness coversWinter in the Wilderness is a 216-page book that is broken up into seven sections and four useful appendices. The seven sections are:1. Priorities2. Fire3. Shelter4. Water5. Sustenance6. Helpful Crafts and Skills7. Navigation and OrienteeringThe four appendices are:1. Motor Vehicle Considerations (where you're told what to do if you're stuck in your car in a remote place in the winter)2. Survival Kits3. Winter Gear Checklist4. Suggested ReadingStrengths of Winter in the WildernessThe appendix, especially the survival kits and winter gear checklist are extremely useful. Many illustrations, which are useful to visualize how to make a snow cave or how to set a snare. It gives you all the basic and intermediate things you need to know to survive in the wilderness.Weaknesses of Winter in the Wilderness- The cover stinks. Yes, I'm being superficial, but the cover looks like a self-published nightmare, not something done by Cornell University.- Although the illustrations are useful, they are the same quality as Tom Brown's classic book, Field Guide to Wilderness Survival. Brown's book was written before the era of desktop computing and computer graphic illustration. I would have preferred superior graphics and/or photos. Usually, I could see what they're trying to show me, but sometimes a better graphic would have helped.- His experience is mostly in New York state. Although talks about situations where you might not find abundant trees or animals, the information is minimal.- It's not super comprehensive. At 216 pages, you can't expect it to cover all the possible edible plants in the world, for example.Who should buy Winter in the Wilderness?- Novices and intermediate backpackers.- Anyone who fears freezing to death in the woods.- Most mountaineers - because you never know when you'll blow off the mountain.- Preppers who want to survive the nuclear winter.Who should NOT buy Winter in the Wilderness?- Advanced backpackers who have spent significant time in the woods probably won't learn much in this 216-page book.VERDICTMost survival guides tell you to stay put when you're in trouble. Conventional wisdom says that the biggest mistake people make is trying to walk out. However, I've always walked out because I sensed that safety wasn't that far away. Indeed, in the USA, it's hard to be more than 50 km (35 miles) from a road. And I always felt strong enough to just keep walking. Had I stayed, I would have to depend on someone saving my ass. Moreover, you tend to weaken with each passing day as the cold and low calories take their toll. Moreover, finding someone in the wilderness is hard, especially if you're off-trail, which is often where you are when you're lost. I'd rather not be stuck there for days or weeks. Staying put and making a shelter isn't always the best solution.Still, this book does an excellent job at teaching how to survive for days, even in the frigid wilderness.FOR MORE INFO: I interview the author on my website

Lord Hall’s primer on finding/making fire, shelter, water, food, and the rudiments of orienteering/navigation and other Neat Tricks (e.g., making moccasins or a digging stick, etc.) is pretty frigging awesome. It takes readers through the very basics of whatever skill is at hand. To make fire, for example, you have three choices—the bow drill, the two-person cord drill, and the hand drill. Variations generally go on to demonstrate more sophisticated ways of accomplishing the task. Note that “sophisticated” doesn’t always mean easy, or pretty. The chapter on “Sustenance,” for example, notes that “[f]oraging in winter is a…difficult task, but with practice you can identify wild edible plants and trap animals.” The food itself isn’t the Four Seasons (plants like hackberry and acorns will basically help you not to starve) and trapping game, even with a simple deadfall, will most likely take a whole long time to perfect. And it won’t cook itself! With skills like this guide can teach you, forget about your audition for Naked and Afraid. They know you’ll come back too well rested and having gained some muscle. VERDICT Awesome stuff, like Boy Scouts 2.0, that will backdate your “primitive” skill set about 50 years and prepare you very well for survival in the cold and/or disasters of all sorts. If you can master this stuff—and what the hell, it’s actually fun to try—you’ll be the dude sleeping in the backyard snow cave every winter there’s enough snow to do it. Copyright Library Journal.

By Amazon Customer I have spent much time in the Adirondacks in upstate New York and did not know how little I actually knew about wilderness survival until I read this detailed book! It has now become my "go to" gift for my daughter, off exploring the Green Mountains of Vermont. Thanks for a fantastic guide!

The jaguar is the rarest mammal to roam the United States, but Janay Brun was lucky enough to have a close encounter with this revered feline. Meeting the nation's only known wild jaguar, known as Macho B, in the Sonoran Desert inspired her ten-year odyssey following the endangered cat's trail. Their story begins in the remote lands along the southern U.S. border with Mexico and concludes in the hollowed halls of a federal courtroom in Tucson, Arizona. Environmental activist and "Grizzly Years" author Doug Peacock calls Janay Brun's exposé "a very valuable book...As good an inside look at insular fish and game departments as has been written. The role and cost of whistleblowing is clear, as is the portrait of the assholes who skated." Josh Gross, founding editor of the "Jaguar and its Allies" blog, has dubbed this "a must-read book."

We finally have the full story of the worst fiasco perpetrated in Arizona’s long wildlife “management” history (and that’s saying something when one considers how many endangered Sonoran pronghorn, black-footed ferrets, desert bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and Mexican gray wolves have died thanks to being under the auspices of the state wildlife agency). In 2009, wildlife field technician and eyewitness Janay Brun was resolute enough to blow the whistle on those responsible for the illicit capture and subsequent killing of the iconic borderlands jaguar called “Macho B”. The convoluted tale of incompetence, arrogance, conspiracy, and deceit on the part of both the Arizona Game and Fish department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should be seen as an eye-opener for the general public that had erroneously had put their trust in these agencies to protect wildlife, not destroy or abuse it. When the media spotlight was pointed at the perpetrators, when federal investigators found cause to file criminal charges, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona - a man who would shortly thereafter be allowed to resign that position in disgrace, instead of facing his own criminal charges for his key role in the insane and bungled “gun walking” scheme called “Fast and Furious” - issued them immunity. In order to deflect attention from the fact that these agencies had broken their own laws which the public must abide by, they decided to use the heavy hammer of the Endangered Species Act to try and break the whistleblower who had shown the audacity to stand up to them; and in doing so exposed the tainted, incestuous, secretive underbelly of wildlife “management” in the United States. Only Janay Brun would be taken to the Federal Marshal’s office in Tucson, be mug-shot, finger printed, deprived of her passport, have a special FBI file started, her freedom of movement harshly restricted, and have to pay outrageous legal costs that come to anyone trying to survive a judicial assault by the federal government. All this was while the real culprits and their puppeteers were laughing up their sleeves, facing no repercussions, secure behind their bogus wall of immunity. This should be a wake-up call for all American citizens. It could happen to them too. The Congressman who originally was a vocal proponent of real investigations into these travesties of justice should be ashamed that he didn’t follow through and get to the bottom of the whole sordid mess. The fact that some of those whom the federal investigators wanted to take to court are still in positions to replay similar wildlife debacles is mind-boggling. Read the book: then call or write your Congressman and demand renewed scrutiny.

EXCELLENT BOOK PROVIDING A GREAT SERVICE TO WILDLIFE LOVERS By Ricardo Small This is a very well written account of the gross mismanagement of jaguar by agencies supposed to have wildlife as a priority. This book provides a great service to all of us who care about wildlife. I highly recommend this book. The writing is by a true wordsmith, making reading a joy.

In the middle of the night at the Super Mart, Jack’s encounters with the obese on scooters and a pimp spoiling his hoes help ease his existential troubles. Working alongside an eternal optimist, a profane supervisor, and an impish duo helps Jack cope with the endless struggle of stocking frozen pizzas. This story inspired by mostly true events and sheds light on the monotonous but often humorous experience that is working retail. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Camus Chuckles By Derren Grathy The existential dilemmas Jack ponders about while trapped in a Sisyphean cycle of stacking pallets of frozen goods and dealing with a strange characters that inhabit the store he works are the kinds of divine comedy jokes one would find in the pages of Dante or Camus. If there is such a thing as gallows humor about endlessly stocking shelves and dealing with the oddities of pimp-daddy customers and eternally-optimistic coworkers, this short story certainly explores it.With interesting portraits of characters produced by our weird modern Superstore culture and while exploring that nagging feeling that our existences of pure, mundane routine are not exactly the Paradise commercials have us envision, I would recommend this book to anyone feeling like having a Camus-inspired chuckle and those who have ever experienced the daily grind of life as a retail grunt.
