5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Saki at his best By Robert Guttman Beasts and Super-Beasts comprises thirty-seven short stories from the pen of the incomparable Saki, which was the pen-name for H. H. Munro. Saki's ironic and witty stories chronicled the British upper class during the Edwardian period, the era that represented the zenith of British power and complacency just before the cataclysm of World War I. The quality of his wit and satiric humor are of the very highest order, comparable to very best of Oscar Wilde and Ambrose Bierce. As with Bierce, a touch of cruelty was often present in Saki's humor. In addition, Saki also shared with Bierce a taste for the supernatural, a quality which comes across in many of the stories in this particular collection.Reading Saki is an absolute must for any aspiring writer, and an absolute pleasure for readers everywhere.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Some of Saki's best stories By Marisa I'm a big fan of Saki's incredibly dry wit and hilariously snarky upper-class idiots - the characters he describes may be firmly set in their particular British early-20th-century setting, but many of them are universal types who can be found in practically any time and place. This collection has some of my favorites (especially the second story "Laura" and "The Schartz-Metterklume Method").The lack of a table of contents is annoying but not terrible, and for a free copy of the text it's readable and enjoyable.

I do like the short story format, and Saki is one of its masters. I like O. Henry, Ambrose Bierce, Oscar Wilde, Poe and Shirley Jackson. Got this one free for the Kindle, so I can browse and consume at my leisure.

Just Recompense (Basil Ackroyd's France Book 2), by Douglas Wallis

About the Author Douglas has lived in France for many years and with his French wife enjoys its rich life in the Loire Valley. He writes of people he may have know throughout a very varied life, wrapped in the mists of fiction. The events of his stories are no less believable than the true events he has experienced himself.

A screwball comedy about the English mayor of a small French town, "Just Recompense" is the second installment in a series that may appeal most to fans of British staples like "Carry On" and "Are You Being Served."Basil Ackroyd, the main character, is a Brit living in the French countryside with his wife and children after being forced to leave the UK under vague scandalous circumstances. Somehow Basil is Mayor of a French town, despite his nationality and his past. Basil seems to always find trouble, which in this case starts when an old enemy, Ginger, calls to ask Basil for a favour. High jinks, slapstick comedy, and murder ensue as Basil gets entangled with Chinese crooks, Russian hitmen, and crooked French politicians with axes to grind. The prose is lighthearted and the humour is wry, though the story has a distinctly episodic feel--most of the action takes place in a couple of locations in the small town, with the local populace (who all seem to be British) commenting on the comings and goings of the various characters. The abrupt end also makes this feel like a series rather than a novel. I hadn't read the first book, so that likely affected my understanding of the sequel. This book seemed designed for those coming right out of Book 1, as there were little to no introductions to the multitude of characters and their relationships with one another. This meant I had a hard time figuring out the who and why of many plot points.Overall a lighthearted read for fans of episodic fiction and traditional British humour, but I would recommend starting at Book 1 if you wanted to give this series a go.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Brayton PlotBritsher Basil Ackroyd, mayor of the French town of Durac, is in trouble. He owes his Italian uncle a lot of money. An insurance investigator has questions regarding a fire. One of his buildings is desired by the local constabulary and Basil's wife, but is reported to be available as a refuge for illegal immigrants. An old 'friend' shows up with another scheme to pay owed debts...but winds up dead instead. Meanwhile, a young woman in the government is outraged at the reports of illegals and plans to make Basil pay.Add in a Russian and a Chinese and this makes for a crazy complex concoction. The plot jumps from item to item so try to keep up.CharactersBasil Ackroyd: British, mayor of the French town of Durac, smokes cigars, has a sister, owns a motorbike, rotund stomach, has children, has a mustacheElizabeth Lindy Ackroyd: Basil's wife, company ownerSid: cafe ownerJack Waldo 'Ginger' Frampton: drives a Mercedes truck, divorcedLeticia Frampton: obese, Ginger's sisterClaudine Dubois: insurance investigatorAbdul Bin Avay: has some gold in his teeth, dark skin, notary publicJean Paul Beauclaire: has the rank of CaptainEverybody in this book is nuts. Basil reminds me a bit of Cleese's Basil Fawlty. Not many physical descriptions for characters, but I could get a vague sense of them through their personalities.DialogueBasil's secretary's voice comes through because of her personality. So does Leticia's. Some conversations tend to go back and forth at a rapid pace like an old radio comedy. Near the end there are lengthy explanatory conversations.WritingSome profanity. This reads like a comedy show. There's some corny humor, prat fall type antics and a roundabout way of getting to the end. It's a different read than most. With so many characters with so many connections, it took me awhile to get into it and even when I started too, it veered off around another corner.Still a pretty good read. I debated awhile on what rank to give it but decided that the clean writing (I didn't see mistakes in grammar, spelling, etc) earned it:Purple Belt

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dark Screwball Comedy of Many, Many Errors... By Kelly Kobayashi I have not read a protagonist so unscrupulous and ultimately self-destructive since the likes of Scarlet O’Hara.Basil Ackroyd, the portly English expat and self-preserving mayor of Durac, France, returns in this second installment of Douglas Spencer Wallis’ dark farce series. Picking up right where Futile Deceptions left off, Just Recompense finds Basil only weeks after the prior fiasco. Unfortunately, another fiasco is always inevitable. It’s astounding that anyone so morally-repugnant can be so resilient… and laugh-out-loud funny. This time, Basil’s endeavor to collect money off an ex-associate who skedaddled years ago rapidly leads the cigar-puffing mayor from forged passports, to dirty money, to accidental auto-theft, to self-inflicted stab wounds, to the unwelcome notice of plotting politicians and icy socialites. (With innumerable bumps and tumbles peppering his way.) Basil, however, takes each disaster in stride. Avarice with a side of blinding self-confidence is the order of the day… and our anti-hero is no stranger to meals. All of France seems to be working an angle. Faraway politicians plan to use the corrupt Englishman as their scapegoat. Basil’s private secretary Sylvie still retorts with a bit too little thought while flashing a bit too much skin. Elizabeth Lindy has grown exasperated with her role as Basil’s glorified trophy-wife and is wrestling with secrets that may shred their marriage. Timid Capitaine Beauclaire is reeling from his short, stolen moments with her… which seem to have meant far more to the officer than to Elizabeth. Basil’s longtime confidante Abdul decides to make a run for it, leaving Claudine Dubois to step up as Durac’s first lady notaire. And everyone’s past just keeps rising to the surface like sewage in a flooding gutter.Just Recompense is an incredibly fast-paced, inventive, and surprising read! The absurd situations, physical comedy, hair-brained plans, over-the-top personalities, and insatiable Basil keep the pages flying. This tale is by all means a Farce. What should be hopeless comes off as haphazard coincidence. What should be abhorrent is played for laughs. And just when you’ve lost all patience with Basil Ackroyd, the poor, deluded fellow falls in so deep that you can’t help but root for him… against your better judgment.I strongly recommend reading the Basil Ackroyd’s France series in order, as the schemes and scandals from the first book do carry over into the second. Though I eventually reached an understanding with the substantial cast of characters-each of whom is masterfully intertwined and necessary-I did spend the first several chapters trying to sort out where everyone was from, why so few citizens seemed to be French, what year it was, and what exactly had brought about the shady purchase of a statue and the recent arson of a public building…If you’re a fan of the screwball comedies of the 1930s, the campy thrillers of the 1960s, or the completely-improbable action films of the 1980s… Basil Ackroyd’s zany, brazen, barely-survivable adventures are for you!

Have you ever wondered how we came into being? Have you ever looked in the sky, marveled by the stars?

As we have realized over hundreds of years...

Space is filled with a variety of phenomenon. The timing of these events is in terms of millions and billions of years, far exceeding the average human life span. Yet the universe made available many clues to understand how it builds these stars and planets, even if we personally will not live through an entire life cycle of a star or planet. On the hunt for these clues, scientists continue to study the universe, accessing supplementary data to further explain how it was created….

In this book you will learn things like…

  • Brief history of astronomy
  • Galaxies and Solar System
  • The Sun and The Moon
  • Different types of Stars and Planets
  • Black Holes and Wormholes
  • Meteors, Comets, Asteroids

And much, much more!!!

The author has managed to capture the mystery of space and enabled himself to write the facts in a way that is extremely easy to read. The pictures provided enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the book and they also made a great reference when reading. Hopefully the author release more books like this one!

David Astronomy is one of the most interesting science and I guess it is a good outdoor nature hobby. First of all, I will not need too much tools or equipment to start with. I can simply have the night sky, my eyes and a book like this. This book discussed the basics of astronomy. It gave a brief astronomy history, talked about the galaxy and the solar system, the sun, the moon, stars and other parts or elements of the universe. Though some of the topics discussed were already familiar to me (I think we all had this subject when we were in grade-school and high-school), I was able to learn good astronomical facts. In fact, I quite find it funny that I never have truly understood what light-year means until I read this book or maybe I just forgot, either way, I'm still thankful this book refreshed my knowledge on that; and the diamond planet? I think it is really amazing. This book made me feel like a kid again, a kid filled with wonder, fascination and awe. I enjoyed reading it and I would recommend it to anyone, young or old, who likes reading about science, astronomy and space.

This is truly an educational book, just found out that there is a thing called the diamond planet? You could just imagine if NASA has developed a robot that could harvest that stuff and who knew that black holes emit lightning with epic voltage! The book will really give you surprising facts. I strongly suggest this to all parents who wants their child to practice their reading skills while using a tab or phone.
