Faster, Higher, Stronger: The New Science of Creating Superathletes, and How You Can Train Like Them, by Mark McClusky

Review “Faster, Higher, Stronger is one of the most lucid and entertaining books I've read about sports science and how it is making better, faster, stronger athletes. More important, though, Mark McClusky clearly explains why this science matters to the rest of us and how we can use it in our lives. A smart and important book.”—Gretchen Reynolds, author of The First 20 Minutes “Success in top-level sports is no longer just an athletic contest -- it’s a learning contest that takes place on the frontiers of science, technology, and the human body. If you’re interested in understanding and competing in this new world, you need to buy Mark McClusky’s smart, invigorating, and useful book, right now.”—Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code and The Secret Race “In my more than 20 years researching the field of health and fitness, few books have captured my attention like Mark McClusky's riveting investigation of the groundbreaking science fueling elite athletic performance. Faster, Higher, Stronger breaks the code and gives everyday readers a chance to steal the cutting-edge secrets of the pros.”—Dave Zinczenko, author of Eat This, Not That “Is fatigue mostly in your head? Can built-in talent take you to the Olympics in only four years? Will big data transform how we play basketball? Faster, Higher, Stronger is a brilliant, fun report on the science of hacking your performance.”—Clive Thompson, author of Smarter Than You Think “Mark McClusky has written an enlightening, intelligent, comprehensive look at the merging of sports and science. It’s truly fascinating stuff.”—Jeff Pearlman, bestselling author of Showtime “An engaging journey through the intersection of sports and science, Faster, Higher, Stronger is a must-read for armchair athletes, coaches, parents, and anyone who wants to understand human potential."—Chris Anderson, bestselling author of The Long Tail and Makers “Today, in sports, what you are is what you make yourself into. Innate athletic ability matters, but it’s taken to be the base from which you have to ascend. Training efforts that forty years ago would have seemed unimaginably sophisticated and obsessive are now what it takes to stay in the game. Athletes don’t merely work harder than they once did. As Mark McClusky documents in his fascinating new book, Faster, Higher, Stronger, they also work smarter, using science and technology to enhance the way they train and perform. It isn’t enough to eat right and put in the hours. “You need to have the best PhDs onboard as well,” McClusky says. This technological and analytical arms race is producing the best athletes in history.”—The New Yorker “McClusky’s eye-opening account of sports science shatters outmoded training myths and heralds a revolutionary new terrain, in which the combination of high-tech methods and scientific breakthroughs designed will give the sports fan something wondrous to watch.”—Publishers Weekly “In Faster, Higher, Stronger, journalist Mark McClusky takes us into the world of athletics, looking at what differentiates winners from losers in elite competitions, from the Olympics to Formula One auto racing. The focus on extremes of excellence and performance at the margins of human capability makes a great read. The casual sportsman is not forgotten, as McClusky touches back on his own golf game to help weekend athletes relate. Marginal gains, trainability, and best fit run through the book, which is filled with engaging stories of athletes reaching the podium or missing by a hair.”—Science “Speed-skating super-suits, motion-tracking cameras, the 10,000 hour rule—it's all covered in Mark McClusky's engrossing look into how athletes use science to avoid injury, train smarter, and shatter records.”—Mother Jones “McClusky states that “every great athlete is the product of the interaction between their genetics and their effort,” and he presents rigorous research with an accessible style relatable to both professional and lay readers alike. All of this trickles down to amateur athletics as well, and McClusky does a good job of relating cutting-edge science to people wanting to run their 5K a little faster or shave a few strokes off their golf handicap.”—Booklist “While most of the work is dedicated to advancements in sports science, McClusky saves the inevitable conversation of performance-enhancing drugs for the conclusion. He tries to discover the thin line between finding and utilizing scientific advantages and actual cheating. It's a difficult one to discover, but the book's overall strength is McClusky's willingness to engage those questions many sports fans have trouble navigating. This is a fascinating read about the creative—and sometimes bizarre—training techniques extreme athletes use. VERDICT: This brief but detailed tour of modern sports science will garner strong interest from athletes, sports fans, and even couch potatoes.”—Library Journal

About the Author A former Sports Illustrated editor, Mark McClusky has contributed to several bestselling books and is a contributor to Alinea, by Grant Achatz. He lives in Oakland, California.

Insightful look at the use of science in sports By AmazonFan If you have read any of Mark McClusky's writings on the convergence of sports and science in Sports Illustrated or Wired magazine, then you are familiar with his years of exhaustive research on the subject. In Faster, Higher, Stronger, McClusky builds on his previous articles to provide a fascinating, in-depth look at how science, technology, medicine, nutrition and training work together to improve the performance of elite athletes.Today, even the casual athlete is aware of how technology and science are used to improve performance, whether it be through a golf swing analyzer, the design of a new running shoe or through altitude training. Throughout the book, McClusky uses examples of familiar athletes to illustrate the progress made in various sports and the advantages of different training techniques for strength vs. endurance vs. skill athletes. He even discusses several long-held but misunderstood training concepts, like the need for carb replenishment during workouts less than 75 minutes long, that weekend athletes can apply to their own workouts. There is a wealth of information here - sometimes reading like a medical or chemistry textbook so be prepared - but it is incredibly fascinating and informative. With so much emphasis on Olympic and professional champions, I was beginning to think McClusky would leave the elephant in the room of sports unaddressed. But in the second to last chapter, "Athletes' Little Helper," he finally tackles the delicate issue of performance enhancing drugs (and the fall of icons like Ben Johnson, Marion Jones and Lance Armstrong). It's one of the more interesting chapters in the book and McClusky does a good job of walking that fine line between jaded sports journalist and unabashed fan.Faster, Higher, Stronger is not just for those aspiring to Olympic greatness or a place on the roster of a professional sports team - that would be a very limited audience. Instead, it is written for the average layperson who wants to better understand the strides made in the study of how the human body works when pushed to its physical limits.

Good, General Overview of the Intersection Between Sports and Science By Kevin Joseph Mark McClusky's survey of the scientific influences of sports performance offers a comprehensive look across a number of subjects that other recent books have handled individually and in greater depth. For example, The Sports Gene offers a deeper look at genetic contributors to performance, and other books examine performance enhancing-drugs and data analytics in more detail. Consequently, the text moves from subject to subject without putting forth a remarkable thesis beyond the rather-obvious observation that science is affecting the way athletes approach their sports, in much the same way as it is affecting other aspects of our lives. For me, the most groundbreaking portions were those that discussed how science is allowing athletes to train more intelligently and specifically to hone those skills sets unique to their particular sports. That said, the writing style is clear and engaging, and the author makes good use of interesting anecdotes and studies to support his observations. So I would recommend this book for someone who has not read extensively on these subjects and wants a good, general overview of the intersection between sports and science.

Interesting and Enlightening; An Enjoyable Read By Craig Stephans McClusky covers a wide gambit of science's contributions to the sports world in the last decades. I appreciate that the book covers a plethora of sports. He discusses sports ranging from individual performances like track & field, swimming, weightlifting and cycling to team sports like soccer, baseball, football and hockey. The subjects include nutrition, specialized training, equipment, lifestyle, age factors, genetics, and more. The book is well-written and researched. McClusky incorporates scientific data, sports facts, interviews and citations of research. Readers will learn all that goes into championship athletes and their teams. A focus is on what sets the elite tier athletes apart from the other great professional and amateur athletes. So much of the work involved is geared toward finding slight edges here and there. A good way to sum up the contributions is in the words quoted from a book about cycling, "performance by the aggregation of marginal gains." The book touches on the many little ways of improvement by science and expert training. For the average athlete, there are some bits and pieces to take away. One thing I will try to practice is the shot of espresso before the event, as practiced by European cycling teams and shown to at least trick the brain into thinking it is not fatigued.I think the book could have been enhanced by a chapter at the end that summed up and itemized the gleanings for the average athlete or parent of athletes to incorporate in their routines and lives.

Situaciones tan confusas que solo una mente privilegiada optaría por levantar muros que a la postre la mantendrían alejada de la locura permanente y de la definición justificada por la psicología moderna como psicosis o al extremo asesino serial.

The next time it’s sunny out, use this method to find north (or south in the southern hemisphere).  STEP ONE Start early and place a vertical stick on a large flat spot that will stay in sunlight all day. This is called a gnomon. A yardstick in a can of dirt, or a (clean!) plunger, will work. Mark its spot in case it moves.  STEP TWO Mark the line of the plunger’s shadow in chalk or place a stone at the tip of the shadow. You can also write the time.  STEP THREE Make this same observation as often as possible, especially in the middle of the day. Every 30 minutes is ideal.  STEP FOUR Find the shortest shadow marking or the stone closest to the gnomon. That line represents when the Sun was highest in the sky—midday (it can be as late as 1:30 PM during daylight saving time). It is also the point when the Sun was southernmost in the northern sky, or northernmost in the southern sky.  STEP FIVE Draw a line between the plunger and the tip of the shortest shadow. This line points directly north in the northern hemisphere or south in the southern hemisphere. With a compass (or compass app), see for yourself the difference between true north, which you just found, and magnetic north.

An Absolutely Perfect Place to Start Your Journey By Smartpage Books It is easy to tell that this book has been put together by people who are skywatchers. First of all, the book is the right size and is of very sturdy construction. This book is intended to be used, and used a lot. Of course the real measure of any book is the material it contains. I have looked at every page, and what a great assortment of tips and techniques, of how-tos and actually useful information - all accompanied by detailed drawings, photos, and illustrations. This is truly a one-size-fits-all manual on how to skywatch. The book also contains information about how to construct some useful tools for skywatching. Clearly, a lot of thought has gone into the topics covered in this book. If you are a beginner, this should be your new best friend! If you are not a beginner, then you will most likely pick up a new skill of two from reading this book, or at the least, gain some new insights on old friends in the night sky. And just so you know, there are significantly more than 275 topics covered. How many? Buy the book and find out.I close this review with my deepest gratitude to those who put this book together - what a fine job you have done to help those of us at the beginning of our journey to wander around the night sky.

Remember the first time you were taken our stargazing and got to look through a telescope? Remember how fun it was? If you are thinking about getting back into the astronomy, or thinking of buying a telescope, or if you are just curious our cosmos and all things space related or if you are presently an amateur astronomer, this is a great book for you!The book features about 300 mini-section each covering a standalone topic. Each mini-section has about a page or so of text and quite a few beautiful illustrations, photos and graphics. These sections can be read in just about any order. A few examples: Section #134 "Meet Jupiter" ( (Jupiter's year is 12 earth years long, the Red Spot is the size of two earths, and Jupiter has 50 "confirmed" moons)Topic # 145 "How to Select a Telescope" (Look for diameter not power- 4.5-6 inches is a good place to start, try before you buy and make sure it fits in your trunk) Section #64- "Learn how indigenous Australians view the Milky Way" (turns out some groups view if as a rivercontaining fish, others view it as drowned brothers.)All in all, its a beautiful book that is fun to flip through. Simple enough for a kid to read and yet with enough real information to satisfy an interested adult. Great gift that you will want to keep for yourself.

My 7 year old is super interested in the solar system and its stars, so when this manual arrived on our doorstep the other day, she was over the moon. We look forward to gazing at the sky together, with the help of this manual, and actually knowing what we are looking at. I have read other stargazing books/manuals before, but this one is so easy to read with great tips and tricks to get the most out of the night sky. I highly recommend this manual to anyone who wants to have a better handle on the vast beauty of our solar system.

What is consciousness and how can a brain, a mere collection of neurons, create it? In Consciousness and the Social Brain, Princeton neuroscientist Michael Graziano lays out an audacious new theory to account for the deepest mystery of them all. The human brain has evolved a complex circuitry that allows it to be socially intelligent. This social machinery has only just begun to be studied in detail. One function of this circuitry is to attribute awareness to others: to compute that person Y is aware of thing X. In Graziano's theory, the machinery that attributes awareness to others also attributes it to oneself. Damage that machinery and you disrupt your own awareness. Graziano discusses the science, the evidence, the philosophy, and the surprising implications of this new theory. Now in an affordable paperback edition!

Consciousness and the Social Brain, by Michael Graziano

Review "The author offers an engaging and accessible explanation of his theory. Rather than merely touting its merits, he aims to show how it is compatible with other popular theories. Avoiding technical details, he uses anecdotes, drawings, and metaphors to convey an understanding of the important concepts. [This book] turns the field's contemporary wisdom on its head, and from its new vantage point one has the sense that an answer to the problem of consciousness might be in sight. Graziano's attention schema theory marks a milestone by offering a plausible, mechanistic answer to the hard problem." --Aaron Schurger, Science Magazine

"Graziano proposes a new and intriguing theory of consciousness... [He] guides readers step-by-step through his captivating and convincing theory of consciousness, explaining how the theory accounts for many oddities in human perception. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in consciousness from either a scientific or philosophical perspective." --Library Journal

"In most scientific theories, awareness emerges from the physical functioning of the brain, almost like heat rising from circuits. Laid out in his recent book...Graziano's theory takes a completely different approach to explaining consciousness. 'In this theory, the brain is an information-processing device. It doesn't produce non-physical essences -- it computes information,' Graziano said. Graziano has given consciousness a more solid footing in the real, tangible world even if it remains a creation of the brain, Schurger said. 'If anything, his theory stands to demystify consciousness, in the same way that our understanding of genetics and self-organizing systems has begun to demystify 'life,' which was once thought to depend on an unseen force.'" --Morgan Kelly, Princeton University News

"There are many rewards to this text... Graziano's work is in important step in bridging a persistent gap between mind and brain in interdisciplinary research, notably because he attempts to answer the questions that require asking, and he does so with a remarkable level of humility." --Metapsychology

About the Author Michael S. A. Graziano, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at Princeton University, is an internationally renowned scientist and an award-winning novelist. His books include the popular science title God, Soul, Mind, Brain and the short novels The Divine Farce, The Love Song of Monkey, and Death My Own Way.

Clason Graziano, a Psychologist and Neuroscientist at Princeton, here carefully and methodically lays out his argument that consciousness, rather than being an epiphenomenon, an emergent phenomenon or some ethereal, immaterial thing, is instead a straightforward (though complex) brain function. His theory is easily summarized -- he does it himself 8 pages in (total spoiler, gives the whole story away):"The brain does two things that are of particular importance to the present theory. First, the brain uses a method that most neuroscientists call attention. Lacking the resources to processes everything at the same time, the brain focuses its processing on a very few items at any one time. Attention is a data-handling trick for deeply processing some information at the expense of most information. Second, the brain uses internal data to construct simplified, schematic models of objects and events in the world. Those models can be used to make predictions, try out simulations, and plan actions. What happens when the brain inevitably combines those two talents? In the theory outlined in this book, awareness is the brain's simplified, schematic model of the complicated, data-handling process of attention."The rest of the book explains and supports this theory in great detail. He doesn't evade obviously controversial issues, like where religion and spirituality fit in to this scheme or whether or not other creatures possess consciousness, and he places the development of consciousness as an adaptive feature of human evolution, important for our development into a deeply social animal, and now important for additional reasons.Graziano's frequent repetition of the fundamental ideas might put some people off, but, not being anything like an expert on the subject matter I found that the frequent guideposts prevented my getting lost in unfamiliar intellectual terrain.I haven't a clue about the scientific value of his claims, but I recommend the book for its fresh approach to the "problem" of consciousness and for the care and grace with which the author makes his case.In the Kindle version, you should be warned, some footnotes are difficult to access because the author often cites supporting documents in bulk, like "[15-18]" referring to footnote numbers 15 though 18. Numbers 16 and 17 would be hard to read, in this case.

Graziano's book is the best one I've come across. Clearest. Best-written. Most convincing.Over and over, I found myself saying "yes, yes, yes." Yet not, as Graziano notes in several places, without some disturbing underlying feelings behind those "yes's." His theory that awareness is information concerning a sketch of the brain's attention processes goes against our subjective intuition that consciousness is, if not other-worldly, something mysterious -- the well-known Hard Problem.Well, maybe. But this book persuasively argues that the problem is simpler than it appears. Philosophers, mystics, scientists, and others have assumed that consciousness has certain characteristics, then they try to explain how those characteristics come to be. I find Graziano's approach refreshingly creative and out-of-the box.Awareness is information. So is consciousness. The information available to awareness does not contain all of the neurological facts, as these are unnecessary for effective functioning in everyday life. Here's one of my favorite quotes: "Consciousness is composed of information that says, in effect, 'This information is not information'...The brain has constructed a model of something, a picture painted in the medium of information. The model is not terribly accurate."Brilliant. A word I kept saying about Graziano as I read his book.Again, I've read many books dealing with consciousness and how the brain works. Usually I get to the last page feeling like I've been exposed to a lot of facts, most of which I'll quickly forget, but few insights into how seemingly immaterial consciousness/awareness relates to physical goings-on in the brain. In contrast, "Consciousness and the Social Brain" left me feeling like a window had been opened on a whole new way of looking upon myself, other people, and reality as a whole. There are still curtains over that window. Graziano's theory isn't close to being universally, or even widely, accepted. But personally, I have no problem with the book's contention that I have as much consciousness as a puppet does. (Read the book to learn why this is true.)Or, as God does. I much appreciated the next to last chapter, "Some Spiritual Matters." Graziano holds a view of religion and spirituality that makes excellent sense. He accepts two simultaneous truths:"One, literally and objectively, there is no spirit world. Minds do not float independently of bodies and brains. Two, perceptually, there is a spirit world. We live in a perceptual world, a world simulated by the brain, in which consciousness inhabits many things around us, including sometimes empty space."

The First Sensible Neuroscientific Elucidation of Consciousness By Max Hoiland "Consciousness Explained" might have been a more accurate title for this book, but it was already taken.Author Michael Graziano's previous research in neuroscience is on the body schema and the motor cortex, which makes him an unlikely candidate for cracking open a new perspective on the hard nut of consciousness. But just as the motor cortex controls and directs our movements, there's the sense that consciousness controls and directs our thoughts. The theory in brief: Attention itself is our automatic ability to focus on one or two aspects of our environment at a time so that our cognitive capacity is not overloaded by trying to focus on everything around us at once. To be able to control something, in this case what we mentally are attending to at any moment, we need a representation of that thing. As our mental representation of our body helps us control our body movements, our mental representation of our attention helps us control our attention. What we pay attention to is crucial for not only carrying out simple tasks but also for high-level and long-term planning. So we need some kind of mechanism for controlling our attention in order to carry out complex tasks in a complex world. And voila, the representation of attention facilitates this control and is what we experience as consciousness. The theory isn't complicated, but it is rather abstract. Reading summaries or reviews of it will probably not make it seem convincing or even immediately comprehensible, but the book lays out all of the parts and shows how they fit together to create a coherent mechanism that we call consciousness. After the basic ideas are grasped, the theory is quite simple, as all good and far-reaching scientific theories are.A major strength of the book is how Graziano places his ideas in the context of other contending theories. While his framework for explaining consciousness is novel, his theory incorporates many of the insights of existing rival theories, like the integrated information hypothesis and various social theories of consciousness. The integrated info hypothesis makes sense in light of how when we attend to an object, our representation of that object appears to be integrated; its shape, color, texture, and location are not separate but tied together in our consciousness. Social theories of consciousness focus on how our consciousness is bound up with the stories we insert ourselves into in order to make sense of our relations with other people and our physical environment. But while both of those theories on their own seem to only each account for partial aspects of how we experience and study consciousness, Graziano's account integrates them so that they plug each other's theoretical gaps.Graziano discusses the neuroscience of the theory, including how and which brain areas are involved. He also examines the philosophical questions at stake, like those relating to free will and qualia, aka the sensation of 'being' conscious. Perhaps the highest praise for this part of the book is that two of the most prominent philosophers of consciousness, Patricia Churchland and Dan Dennett, have come out in support of Graziano's theory. If there was one bone that got stuck in my chops, it would be that the main terms themselves can mean so many different things that occasional passages seemed ambiguous in the broad theoretical sketch contained in the early chapters. However, in the middle of the book he defines his terms more fully and the ambiguity disappears. One wonders whether those fuller definitions could have come earlier or if they were necessarily postponed for the sake of giving an initial big-picture view.Consciousness is something many have strong intuitions about because of its centrality to our experience as experience--a property that seems to not merely belong to us but to define us. This book is for those, not everyone, who are curious about consciousness as a phenomena that is in principle susceptible to philosophical and neuroscientific understanding.

You are cordially invited... After a mishap involving a stripper and a coffin, event planner Lucky Gould-Bang is fired for the third time in three months. When a position for Post Conviction Coordinator pops up at the Bureau of Prisons, Lucky jumps at the chance with no clue what it involves. Finding out she will be planning recently re-instated executions, Lucky finds herself dealing with an ambitious Governor, smarmy death industry executives, protesters and a spree murderer cum pastor on a regular basis, all while trying to do the Governor's bidding by putting on 'family friendly' executions. At the Governor's request, to attend the execution of... Madison Madigan is tired of everyone seeing her as Lil' Maddie, First Granddaughter of the state of Illinois. She's Governor now and she will do anything to win the office on her own merit, even if she has to rely on voters from the other party get there. She reinstated the death penalty over her Party's wishes and now she's determined to make it something everyone is talking about...and not because a run of the mill death by electrocution turned into a barbecue. Her key to winning is Pastor Bishop Parsons--will she commute his sentence or won't she--now all she has to do is make a decision. On this day at the following time... Pastor Bishop Parsons doesn't deny his sordid past. A former drug addict on Death Row for the spree murders of ten people. But twenty years into his sentence he is a reformed man; Pastor of the largest e-church in the country, fundraiser for the upper crust and media darling. He's not ready to die and he'll do anything he can to stop it...even invoking religion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. She must first change the feel of the death chamber as well as figure out how what types of new and better methods to use for ex By Heather L Lucky Gould-Bang is an event coordinator who has lost her third job in several months and is looking something new. When her friend Taryn comes to her with a possible job, Lucky is excited even though all she knows is that job is at the prison. When she goes in for the interview she is expecting to be hired to plan events for the prisoners, staff, warden and possibly the Governor. What she is not expecting is to be told that including in those duties she will be coordinating the deaths of inmates on death row. Lucky isn’t sure how she feels about this new revelation but decides to accept the job and see where it takes her. She must first change the feel of the death chamber as well as figure out how what types of new and better methods to use for executions that won’t fail the way the previous one did. Will she be able to handle having to coordinate other people’s deaths or it will it break her as it has so many others? Madison Madigan is the Governor of Illinois and she is trying to create a separate persona for herself that doesn’t include being the former governor’s granddaughter. Her first step was to reinstate the death penalty but the first execution gets seriously screwed up. Now she is intent on hiring an outsider to become the first Post-Conviction Events Coordinator of the prison. She wants someone who can change the way public executions are done, make them infallible as well as family friendly. Madison is also looking for someone to help change her public image and get her off the worst dress lists around the world. Will she be able to win the re-elect for Governor or will her antics be too much for the people of Illinois? Will she give a stay to a beloved prisoner on death row or will she follow through with the sentence that was almost 20 years ago? Taryn Micklesby works for the BoP and for the Warden and she has been delegated to handle the hiring of the new Events coordinator. Taryn is beautiful, intelligent and successful but she dreams of having more. She wants to good friends with the Governor as well as possibly becoming the Governor’s trusted Advisor. She will work any angle and use whatever manipulations necessary to reach her goals, including using lucky as the new coordinator and her stepsister Patrice aka Tricee as a professional stylist to help Madison to accomplish her goals. Bishop Lamont Parsons has been sitting on death row for almost twenty years for being a serial killer and killing 10 people. During his time in prison, he has become a Pastor, an activist, started an E-Church, and won a Pulitzer Prize winner. Now that the death penalty has been reinstated Pastor Bishop has been informed he will be executed in 6 months’ time. He believes and wants everyone else to believe that he is a changed man since he is now a man of GOD he deserves a stay of execution and/or to have his sentence commuted. Pastor Bishop will do everything he can to try and make sure that he is successful in his cause even going as far as scheduling multiple media interviews, using his echurch followers to petition and protest on his behalf and also by staging the first ever behind bars internet press conference. Will he be able to convince the Governor that he is a changed man and deserves a second chance or will he lose his life the same way his victims did? Natasha writes an intriguing and eye opening fictional book about the interworking of a prison and Governor’s office. She shows multiply dimensions to each of her characters as well as making them likable and hated at the same time. She allows the reader to imagine what goes behind closed doors all the while holding their attention by providing glimpses of what’s to come. Ms. Jackson keeps the story light and makes the darkness acceptable. I read this story in a span of a few hours because I couldn’t put it done due to the need to know the outcome of each person’s story. With this book, your attention will be grabbed and held till the very last page.

Not going to spoil the original story which brings together the worlds of prisons, executions, religion and politics superbly. But I laughed out loud and enjoyed reading something that stands out from the throng of all that sameness.I am always complaining that all that I read is the "same book" well no fear of that happening here. The characters were vividly drawn and unique, plenty of different types of people in there rather than the usual dull caricatures. The book is written with a light deft touch and an eye for pacing that keeps the plot ticking nicely along. Plenty of walks of life come in for a slating in this satire, organised religion and politics perhaps more than any other. And boy do they deserve it. Poking fun at the powerful is the job of any satire and the po-faced certainly end up with egg of their faces. Buy this book it's a great read.

It was full of insight and thought provoking scenes about different perspectives of prison style executions. It was not a dark , depressing story though. It was full of humor, sadness, greed and the status quo of politicking. The characters are real and multi dimensional, allowing the reader get caught up in their struggles. This is not your typical story; it is a great caricature of good and evil. I loved it. Thanks to the author for keeping in real with a wonderful entertaining story."

I happen to find them incredibly amusing. Having read numerous stories of Max Bullet I continue to look forward to the next one. I would classify the style as "absurdist" and the humor as twisted and dark. None of that keeps me from laughing out loud with each reading and even chuckling over parts for days afterwards. No literary device is safe as the author seems to use them all while poking fun at each of them. I encourage you to spend a buck and check out the adventures of Max Bullet. They are the perfect length for a bedtime story to your deranged children.

It was the evening of the 15th of June 1975. All over the United Kingdom excited anglers waited for the stroke of midnight before they could make their first casts into the murky depths of piscatorial bliss. For the 16th of June is the beginning of a new coarse fishing season, a nine-month period where anglers can unwind after a week of hard work and feel at one with nature and the beautiful British countryside, and feel normal again. Some folk view anglers as eccentric and most angling clubs have their oddball characters, none more so than the Spinfield Coarse Angling Club. Follow the antics of three carp anglers dressed in drag, Jed, Will and Rick, and an angler who thinks he is Mr Crabtree, but hardly ever catches anything. Spigworth Pond, an angling book with a difference, guaranteed to make you titter during the blank hours. Careful you don’t laugh too much though, or you may miss a bite!

I would agree with another reviewer who said it was more like a "pamphlet." I thought it would be interesting since I am passionate about learning. All that this book is is a quick pep talk on how you can be a genius if you really believe in yourself, and an explanation on how to speed read. What a rip off... Spend your money elsewhere. I wish Amazon would have a real book filter to protect buyers from "books" like these. Do not purchase.

Not that I consider myself that old but I have to admit learning has become more difficult as I've grown older. I’ve always admired the great geniuses like Einstein and Gates and have wondered what was running in their minds. I imagine their brains are like giant sponges just absorbing everything they focus on. I grabbed this book hoping to learn something new. It mentions a lot of things like the mindset of a genius, speed reading and retention, etc. But what struck me the most is step 5 of 5 which is commit to spend 20 hours on learning something. It actually makes sense. I don’t expect to learn violin after taking just one class. I have to commit my time in order to learn how to play and give more hours to become an expert.

People that do not like to learn have always amazed me, and he points out the reasons and how to overcome those traits that people who do not like to learn have learned growing up. He states a simple 5 step plan to learn. He covers the fact that it only takes 20 hours to learn anything, if you follow his steps. He had a quote that I thought was priceless, "If you want to master the art of learning, you need to learn the value of time. A person that knows the value of time is a person that knows how to use it effectively, and will make the most out of what they have." Certainly worth reading especially if you do not like to learn.

Cosmos, by Carl Sagan

Amazon.com Review Cosmos was the first science TV blockbuster, and Carl Sagan was its (human) star. By the time of Sagan's death in 1996, the series had been seen by half a billion people; Sagan was perhaps the best-known scientist on the planet. Explaining how the series came about, Sagan recalled:

I was positive from my own experience that an enormous global interest exists in the exploration of the planets and in many kindred scientific topics--the origin of life, the Earth, and the Cosmos, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, our connection with the universe. And I was certain that this interest could be excited through that most powerful communications medium, television.

Sagan's own interest and enthusiasm for the universe were so vivid and infectious, his screen presence so engaging, that viewers and readers couldn't help but be caught up in his vision. From stars in their "billions and billions" to the amino acids in the primordial ocean, Sagan communicated a feeling for science as a process of discovery. Inevitably, some of the science in Cosmos has been outdated in the years since 1980--but Sagan's sense of wonder is ageless. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Review ** 'Enticing, imaginative, readable, iridescent The New York TIMES

From the Inside Flap This visually stunning book with over 250 full-color illustrations, many of them never before published, is based on Carl Sagan?s thirteen-part television series. Told with Sagan?s remarkable ability to make scientific ideas both comprehensible and exciting, Cosmos is about science in its broadest human context, how science and civilization grew up together. The book also explores spacecraft missions of discovery of the nearby planets, the research in the Library of ancient Alexandria, the human brain, Egyptian hieroglyphics, the origin of life, the death of the Sun, the evolution of galaxies and the origins of matter, suns and worlds.Sagan retraces the fifteen billion years of cos-mic evolution that have transformed matter into life and consciousness, enabling the Cosmos to wonder about itself. He considers the latest findings on life elsewhere and how we might communicate with the beings of other worlds.Cosmos is the story of our long journey of discovery and the forces and individuals who helped to shape modern science, including Democritus, Hypatia, Kepler, Newton, Huy-gens, Champollion, Lowell and Humason. Sagan looks at our planet from an extra-terrestrial vantage point and sees a blue jewel-like world, inhabited by a lifeform that is just beginning to discover its own unity and to ven-ture into the vast ocean of space.

By A Customer Carl Sagan's Cosmos, tells the strory of 15 billion years of cosmic history like no one else can.The book shows how broad and deep Carl's interests extend and draws the reader into a world of fascination. Although the book is primarily about how science has developed in our society the book touches on subjects such as history, philosophy, religion, cultures and so fourth. The book is written in simple terms and is understandable to those without a background in science.Carl has an amazing ability to write with such enthusiasim and sincerity. Although the book was written at the height of the cold war it reflects an overall optimisim and hope for our species and planet. Carl Sagan is a remarkable human being and humanitarian as is reflected in all of his books. Cosmos is in some way his manifesto and I believe his best book. Carl's death was a loss not just to science but also to our species.Carl Sagan is my favourite author and Cosmos my favourite book.I recommend Cosmos to all of those who can read! *****!!!

As one of the great astronomer-writers of the Twentieth Century, Carl Sagan was extraordinarily communicative with the non-scientific public, able and willing to take the time and trouble to break down the mysteries of the universe into comprehensible fragments. The purpose of this book, which can be considered a companion to the acclaimed television series, is to explain what we know about the universe from a cosmological perspective and why we need to know more about it.Physicists often talk of the unity of the branches of physics: the interrelation and application of mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and optics to the motion of everything from galaxies to subatomic particles. Similarly, Sagan's major theme is the unity of cosmology with the natural and physical sciences that define what we know about the Earth. Does the stifling, carbon dioxide-choked atmosphere of Venus imply anything about the greenhouse effect on Earth? Was a nearby cosmic explosion called a supernova indirectly responsible for the disappearance of the dinosaurs? What would be the biological consequences for the survivors of a global nuclear war? The answers to these questions are vital to the continuation of life as we know it.Sagan also identifies cosmology with its own history. He lavishes reverent detail on the ancient Greek and Alexandrian study of the stars and planetary motions, the pioneering work by the Renaissance scientists Brahe, Kepler, Copernicus, Huygens, and others, and the men who revolutionized science with the formulation of laws of motion, Newton and Einstein. The scope of "Cosmos" is tremendous, from the farthest expanses of the universe containing a hundred billion galaxies in addition to our own Milky Way, at the end of a spiraling arm of which our solar system is located; down to the lone electron circling the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, the most plentiful single entity in the cosmos and the source of everything we know, love, and are. In between there is discussion of the unmanned spacecraft expeditions to investigate "our" planets: Mars with its boulder-strewn, desert-like terrain; the gaseous giant Jupiter; Io, a Jovian moon of incredible redness, spotted with volcanic orifices and resembling an unappealing sauce-covered meatball; Saturn with its ice rings. Would these worlds contain life? Using what we know about the evolution of life on Earth, Sagan hypothesizes how different types of lifeforms might develop on worlds with different environments.Even a casual interest in cosmology requires a fascination with astronomical distances and unthinkably long spans of time in which a human lifetime is but a blink of an eye. However, Sagan seems to write also for those who would rather relate cosmic arcana to familiar terms, and in this sense he is a grand entertainer: A thought experiment that provides a simple but fanciful illustration of the concept of black holes uses the tea party scene in "Alice in Wonderland" as a setting. "Cosmos" neither complicates unnecessarily nor insults your intelligence; very few "popular" science books will capture your imagination so well.

By Roger McEvilly (the guilty bystander) I first saw the series COSMOS on TV in about 1980 when I was about 12, and have been searching for similar material ever since. Carl Sagan is able to capture the mystery and the beauty of astronomy, science, art and religion in a way that most poeple can follow, and in a way that is interesting and invigorating. He is a very clear thinker and presenter. And this book, based on that very popular TV series of the same name, I found in an old book store, which I immediately grabbed. Here was something of my childhood, and something very special. The book did not disappoint. It is filled with stunning images, photographs, illustrations, diagrams and so on. And the text is fun, enlightening, clear, visionary, and precise. Not surprising, since it is written by an atronomer at heart. It is also advisable to search around and buy the illustrated edition-the illustrations add much to the text.Carl places the earth on the shores of the cosmic ocean-the title of the first chapter. He traces religious, artistic and scientific investigations into the 'cosmos' throughout the millenia, and the amount of useful historical information he brings up is quite extraordinary. He draws together the thoughts of ancient cultures like the Greeks, Babylonians, Stone Age man, Renaissance thinkers, poets, artists, and famous scientists, and ties these in with many modern discoveries concerning the nature of the universe. One can see his strong leanings on the likelihood of extraterrestial life and the SETI project between the lines, as well as his views on religion and its place in the human psyche. One particularly interesting peice describes the downfall of the old greek science and the destruction of the library at Alexandria, and how these tie in with his views on history, science and religion in general.Carl Sagan is a very clear and thoughtful writer. It is obvious that his knowledge of human nature and science is vast and humane. He worries much about the mususe of science, and the future of man. This book is a must for lovers of general science, human nature and destiny. As such it is a timeless classic. I'll close with the books closing words:"For we are the local embodiment of a Cosmos grown to self awareness. We have begun to contemplate our origins:starstuff pondering the stars; organised assemblages of ten billion billion billion atoms considering the evolution of atoms; tracing their long journey by which, here at least, consciousness arose. Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we sprung."
