A veteran of two very different careers--newspaper journalism and retail car sales--Ken Webb draws on both when he takes you on a hilarious journey down his personal automotive highway. A life-long car guy, his love affair with wheeled vehicles begins with a tale of a 1949 pedal car delivered by a one armed man and stops off at a pig pen where his Dodge sedan has run off his girlfriend's driveway. It picks up speed when he challenges a Mercedes-Benz on the coastal back roads of South Carolina in his new BMW, and comes to a sudden stop twenty fun tales later in front of a rusted out Ford in the mountains of Western North Carolina. From his unique perch as an upscale car salesman and with a nose for news, Webb has been a collector of stories, always privy to tales about cars, car people, and things that go bump in the night. Along the way this inspired author displays a wicked sense of humor, reminiscent of Roy Blunt, as he enthusiastically describes dates in cars, speeding tickets, and his grandfather's violation in 1914 for driving a Model T Ford 15 mph in a 5 mph zone. When talking with people about this book, Webb found that it reminded them of their own car stories which they were anxious to share. While this book is sold "AS IS," with no warranty, as a used car guy might say, it is a safe bet that these stories will evoke fresh memories from the reader's own life with cars. After all, doesn't everyone have a car story?

High Beams On Bumpy Roads: STORIES FROM A CAR GUY'S LIFE, by Ken Webb

About the Author Ken Webb has been around storytellers all his life, having grown up a preacher's son in South Carolina and having listened to a grandfather whose tales of early and mid-20th Century Southern life stick with him to this day. The importance of stories and listening continued as he earned a degree in journalism, became an award-winning reporter and editor for weekly newspapers, and then a staff writer for The State newspaper in Columbia, SC. In a career shift, Webb worked in automotive sales, management, and consulting, but continues to write and collect stories. He drew on both careers for High Beams on Bumpy Roads as he did in crafting his first novel, Mr. Carter's Sword, a story of honor and retribution, rooted in the Vietnam War, but set in the present day American South. Both books are available as ebooks or in print at amazon.com/Books. Visit kenwebbauthor.com to contact the author or share comments about his work.

Keenan Ken Webb's High Beams and Bumpy Roads reminds me of Doctorow's wonderful work All Creatures Great and Small. Both books use short accounts, reports and anecdotes to help us recall a simpler, gentler time and to meet a delightfully decent man along the way. In Mr. Webb's book, it is his passion for automobiles (rather than Doctorow's animals) that permits us to glimpse what life was like in the Southern gentility of his upbringing. Even the stories set in more recent times reflect a civility that feels like gentle rain on the parched earth of modern American reality.Heat up some hot cocoa, grab a cozy throw and give yourself the gift of this delightful read even if you've never peaked under the hood of a car.

The South Not too long ago By Milton Boykin Ken Webb might have called his book In Remembrance Of Things Past if the book title had not already been taken. It is reminiscent of a time when there were curfews for teenagers, cars were about the only semi-private compartments they could find, and well-brought kids preferred Pabst Blue Ribbon, were a little afraid of red-necks driving pickup trucks, tried to steer clear of strange hooded characters in white robes and avoided traffic cops. There were lots of bumpy roads from the time kids got there car keys until they were taken away in old age. In all, the book is a marvelous and imaginative reminder of what it was like in the South not too many years ago.

By Amazon Customer Often in life we recall events corresponding to the years we owned aparticular make of car. The year we entered military service - oh, that was aPackard Clipper; our first child - that oldDeSoto Firedome; or the year the Mets won the World Series. That's what Ken Webb has done in his latest book: "High Beams On A Bumpy Road." As we read Ken's remembrances, we are reunited with our fondest recollections and the vehicles which fuelled them. The book is fairly short, readable in a couple of enjoyable hours; but each chapter triggers a lifetime of our very best memories.

Never Chase Space Potatoes with Teenage Girls, by Mack Moyer

About the Author Mack Moyer is an infrequently sober writer from Philadelphia. Mack grew up with a variety of couch surfers, drunks, slackers and petty criminals. Thus, he writes about them extensively. He's an avid reviewer of horror novels. Along with his reviews and short stories, catch his rants and bouts of impotent rage on MackMoyer.com and his Facebook page. If you don't have internet access, you can find him standing out front of any number of Philly dive bars offering to write for beer money. Speaking of beer money, his horror novel Sketches of the Wigwam is available now. Buy it, because happy hour is coming up fast.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Potatoes Squeal By Joanie Mack Moyer has some serious problems! Oh, er, I mean the character in the story, Michael, has some serious problems! But he's funny so it's okay. I blame his mom, that chain-smokin' lush. Maker's Mark has that influence on people-it definitely leaves a mark alright-an angry blazing red X on that teeny part of the brain...but how would I know-ahem.Seriously, this short story is awesome, and seriously funny! Funny, creepy, scary, horror-licious. Michael decides to take his 99-year-old mom to a resort on Mountain island, the island where his mom tells him she was raised in a shack, and his father owned part of the weary and worn out resort, complete with plastic palm trees and few tourists. When Michael orders a mojito at the bar, he should have had a clue that this place was creepy and sad when he received his "mojito" made with ground up mints mixed with sugar and vodka. Michael has never met his dad but he recognizes a photo of him hanging in the lobby so he can answer affirmatively when his lushy mom states for the millionth time "Go see your father in the lobby/Did you visit your father?" When he meets Rita, an under-aged beer drinker in the bar, all sense of reality is shutdown for a while and he and Rita go on a goose chase, with, ha, isn't it obvious here - a neon green potato with "tiny nubs for teeth." Yeah, sure, tiny they may be but .... you better read this for yourself to find out what happens. You can easily read it while drinking a vodka with a few mints thrown in and that baked potato you've been craving. Just don't allow it to jump up and start nibbling.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good reading By LAS Reviewer Few people expect an alien invasion while they’re on vacation. Even fewer are prepared for what Mike is about to experience. The dialogue was a lot of fun. This was the kind of tale that required a great deal of speaking, so I was happy to see that the characters weren’t shy about saying what was on their minds. When they weren’t talking, I knew there was a reason for it and made sure to pay close attention to whatever it was that was going on in that scene instead. Writing it this way was a smart decision given how important the conversations were to imagining what was happening. There were pacing issues. The narrator spent so much time describing why Mike and his mom decided to visit the resort that the ending didn’t have the time it needed to be fully developed. This technique would have worked well for novella, but it wasn’t as effective for something as short as this. There simply wasn’t enough space to show how the conflict between the main character and the space potato was escalating. With that being said, I really enjoyed the zaniness of this story. Mr. Moyer has a tongue-in-cheek writing style that worked well with both the humor and the horror elements of the storyline. I laughed and cringed at the same time, and that’s something I like to see in books that explore the lighthearted sides of the things that frighten people.Never Chase Space Potatoes with Teenage Girls is a good choice for anyone who is in the mood for something campy.originally posted at long and short reviews

By Amazon Customer Mike decides to take his 99-year-old mom to a resort on Mountain Island, the island where his Mother was raised, and his dead father owned the resort. He doesn’t mind the cost, as she will die soon and leave him a fortune (a fortune he has never seen).Mike meets Rita in the hotel bar. They enjoy a few drinks together then a strange Luminous Potato appears in the lobby. The two chase the potato, which leads to disastrous results. The authors writing style worked, both the humor, and slightly disturbing elements of the story line played off each other well. It’s more narrative than anything else, but it worked to a point; I would have liked a little more show, somethings need body language to grasp the context of the statements. The ending left me wondering what the hell would happen next, but I guess that was the authors intentions. Personally, I would like to see the story expanded, it definitely has enough potential to lead to a longer, more interesting, and funnier story.
