When we meet the protagonist, Sam Sweet, her job is under review, her finances are in disarray and she is teetering at a crossroads in her life. Will she take the safe route and marry a fiancé she doesn't love or will she find the courage and the means to move on?Sam's problems are exacerbated by a comedy of errors many of which made me laugh out loud. The author, Sarah England has a dry sense of humour that she has invested in her writing. Not only does she entertain us she makes us think about the nature of relationships, with our partners, our parents, and our friends. The characters are larger than life. Sam is a train wreck, her mother an absolute hoot and her fiancé is cringe worthy. This is a fast-paced entertaining read. I found it enjoyable and the funniest novel I have read for a very long time.I purchased this book on amazon.com in 2013 under a different publisher

Molly Tauber owns Molly's Sunshine Bakery in River Oaks, a small, Northern California town. While her head is in the oven, her fiancé––a doctor––is on the East Coast, sewing up faces in a neverending quest for more abbreviations to add to the end of his name. Forever making divine wedding cakes for her customers, Molly wonders if there will ever be one for her. Judging by the length of their engagement, she may be right to wonder. How long can a girl wait?

In Molly Takes the Cake, the first installment in the Taylor Sisters' River Oaks Series, Molly's Sunshine Bakery hosts a constant parade of charming, smalltown characters who consider her bakery the heart of their community. Unlike the baked goods her customers scoop up almost as fast as she can make them, Molly's heart is growing stale. Should she trade in her doctor fiancé for a nerdy fritter fanatic, a man of selfproclaimed mystery and intrigue?

Molly Takes the Cake is refreshingly different from the typical romance novel. Sprinkled with humor throughout, it bakes up into a veritable dessert of romantic comedy.

Review The story is complete in itself, but it is only the beginning of what seems to be a very promising series...Wonderfully expressive writing, captivating characters, and a richly constructed story make this book a great read for any romance fan. --Blue Ink Review

This book takes the cake :) By John i loved this book! it is a funny, inspiring, clean, romantic, suspenseful and an all around delightful read! i really enjoyed the realness of Molly. She's a Believer with real life issues.life didn't suddenly turn into "nothing but roses" just because she became a Christian. wait until the first wedding scene… i was laughing so hard! i wish the next book in the series was out already.i will be purchasing book #2 as soon as it's available.

By Charle J Sometimes you just want to sit down and genuinely enjoy a good hearted and good natured book. The main character, Molly, is very relatable and her sincerity is comforting. There's also some great slap-stick drama with some exes that gets things exciting. Molly and Phil are both characters that you'd want to be friends with and you can't help but root for the best for them. Great read. I can't wait for more in the series.

By Billy Hess I haven't finished the story quite yet but am really enjoying the sheer humor and tom-foolery of its characters. There is something warm about the setting of the small town and it's inhabitants. A pleasant and humorous read so far and will update this when I finish it!

Kiss by heated kiss in the City of Light and Love…

When event planner Chloe Turner wakes up penniless and without a passport in the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris, she only has a few fleeting memories of Claude, the suave French man who convinced her to have that extra glass of wine...before taking all of her possessions and slipping out the door. As the overly organized go-to gal for her drama-queen younger sisters, her anxiety-ridden father, and her needy clients, Chloe is normally prepared for every disaster that comes her way. But with her wedding to her strait-laced lawyer fiancé back in DC only days away and a French con man on the loose with her engagement ring, this is one catastrophe she never could have planned for.

As Chloe tries to figure out a way home, she runs into an even bigger problem: the police are after her due to suspicious activity now tied to her bank account. Chloe’s only hope of retrieving her passport and clearing her name lies in the hands of Julien, a rugged undercover agent who has secrets of his own.

As Chloe follows this mysterious and―although she doesn’t want to admit it―sexy French man on a wild chase through the sun-kissed countryside of France, she discovers a magical world she never knew existed. And she can’t help but wonder if the perfectly ordered life she’s built for herself back home is really what she wants after all.…

It is a fast-paced romance that I would highly recommend. When event planner, Chloe Turner, wakes up in her hotel room in Paris with nothing but a skimpy red dress (not her own), high heels, her underclothes, and a vague memory of the night before, she is in big trouble! Her wedding is in six days, how is she is supposed to fly home with no passport or money? Even her engagement ring is missing! To make matters worse, the police are questioning her over some suspicious activity going on in her bank account. Chloe, who is normally very organized, in control, and ready for any disaster, finds herself in a situation she has no control over! Julien, a undercover agent, persuades Chloe to go with him. Chloe follows Julien around Paris, evading the police looking for Claude to get her passport back so she can go home. She starts to wonder if she made the right decision, can she really trust Julien? Why is she having these feelings for Julien when she is engaged to Paul? And how is she going to explain all this to Paul? She just keeps getting in deeper and deeper! From the very beginning of this story it took off and kept going! I didn't know who to believe. I loved Chloe! She kept on trying to figure out how to get out of the mess she was in. All the while she was tired, confused and her feet hurt from the only shoes she had; high heels! I loved the prologue! It was written as a series of emails between Chloe, her sisters and her boss. It is very telling of her, her relationship with her sisters and her fiance. I also spotted Charlotte and Luc from Sleeping With Paris! They make a cameo appearance. What fun! I love it when an author gives you a peek at their previous characters! Kissed in Paris is a fabulous read, and I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did! I just love the cover, too!

And it did NOT disappoint. This book is a bit more action packed than the first, but that only added something a bit different to it. Kissed was packed with emotion. Sobanet had me laughing out loud, but she also had me in tears. Her easy voice and pacing made the book fly by. Chloe is loveable and Julien is mysterious. Poor Paul! The parts about Chloe's mother are particularly poignant and you need to have out the tissues. You know a book is a great read when you do more cardio at the gym just to keep reading it. Would highly recommend. It's the perfect balance of fun, romance, and adventure. Can't wait for what's next from Sobanet.

36 of 43 people found the following review helpful. "Praying on innocent women" By upfront_reader This is a difficult book to review because although there were parts of it that I liked, there were things about this book that really drove me crazy. Parts of the story were entertaining, and parts were so overwritten as to be almost unreadable. It's very uneven, in other words, and the bad pretty much outweighed the good for me. For one thing, the setup of the story is entirely too reminiscent of the movie "French Kiss"--right down to the heroine whose baggage is stolen, and the hero trying to recover a stolen valuable so he can save the family vineyard. The second thing about the premise that drove me crazy was that it depended on the heroine being too-stupid-to-live. And she was. Who but a t-s-t-l heroine would believe the ridiculous story the hero uses to get her to follow him all around France? Even the reason she's in France in the first place is difficult to believe. Why would any organization planning a meeting in France bring an American event planner over to handle it? Especially one who doesn't even speak French? The subplot involving the hero's brother, Claude, was pretty close to incomprehensible to me. I never could understand why the police would be chasing after the heroine (who was the theft victim) or accusing her of working with the criminal to steal money from her own bank account. Nor could I believe that American police officers would cooperate with a French investigation of a petty crime to the extent of visiting the heroine's fiancé in Washington DC to question him. It was all just too absurd. Some of the silliness of the robbery plot was overcome by the spirited chase through France and the heroine's burgeoning attraction to the hero. But once the hero stopped being such a mystery to the reader and the heroine, the story really bogged down. It doesn't help that the final act of the story depends on a huge, giant, whopper of a coincidence, and that coincidence marks a steep decline in the quality of the writing--as if the author realized how thin the plot was and tried to disguise it. (Although there were glaring errors sprinkled throughout the book, such as the phrase "praying on innocent women" to describe the thieves.) All this silliness could have been overlooked, I guess, if the love story had been at all satisfactory, but it wasn't. I wish I could have liked this book more, but overall, it was not a successful read for me.

Vampires walk among us. Appraising our houses, policing our neighborhoods, crossing our borders. We understand there will be biting and an occasional conversion. These are small sacrifices for the sexy thrill. We do worry about vampires popping up in positions of power. They are evolved, difficult to slay, not sexy. A backlash grows; but are we far too late? Victor Thetherson is nearly cured. The treatment buries the charisma and confidence that only vampirism seems able to resurrect, and snuffs his rekindled love affair with ex-wife Barbara. Victor can’t trust himself as a vampire and doesn’t want to live with himself otherwise. Eugene Foreman dispenses wisdom on his Sage Slayer site, offs vamps when convenient, and romances Amberly Thetherson. His sensei, the Civil War Soldier, begs Eugene to slay Victor before he realizes his deadly inheritance. Victor versus Eugene, round two in an ancient war. With Morbius Reborn, our time at the top of the food chain is coming to an end.

That’s where Harris Gray lives and writes. Crowfoot Coffee is where each day begins, and then continues, as evening comes and the coffee shop lets its hair down and slips into something a little more comfortable, called the Crowbar. Caffeine and craft beer, they go together like Gray and Harris. They are each married, but people still consider them a couple.

He doesn’t want to be the vampire that he was. Unfortunately all the things he had going for him as a vampire are now disappearing. But since he didn’t trust himself as a vampire, Vic is willing to deal with this. Sadly, Eugene is back and doesn’t care that Vic is trying to stop being a vampire.Eugene is back. While still giving sage advice and killing vampires, he is encouraged by his mentor to stop Vic before Vic realizes that power that he has inherited. Let’s see how that is going to work while he is still seeing Amberly. Let’s hope Vic can win round two with Eugene and stop being the vampire he is afraid of.You can’t help feeling for the poor guy. But he is still having trouble being a vampire and trying to do what he can to stop. Sadly everything that he had is now gone since that part of him is gone. All of the altercations with Eugene just make this book.I loved Vampire Vic and couldn’t wait to see what Vic gets himself into in this book. You can’t help but cheer for Vic and laugh at everything that goes wrong for the poor guy. Make sure to check out Vampire Vic 1 & 2.I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Team Eugene! By Lipsy Before we begin, if you missed my review of the first book in this series, you can check it out here. But if you're too lazy to do that, I'll just tell you briefly that I really enjoyed the witty, light-hearted nature of it in comparison to most Vamp Lit out there.Morbius Reborn starts off pretty much where the first book left us. Victor has finally become a respectable vampire. One that bites people, gets the ladies at 'Hello', and has not only survived his company's merger, but has excelled during it.He is a new man compared to the pathetic, middle-aged mess he was at the start of the first book. However, Vic is starting to get a little bit too good at the whole vampire thing and he can't stop biting people. This leads to Vic having treatment for his vampirism, which not only threatens to turn him back into the weak, wobbly, mess he once was, but at the same time Eugene the Vampire Hunter is being pressurised to slay Vic, and it makes no difference at all to Eugene if Vic is trying to get better or not...I wish I could say that I loved this book as much as the first, but I can't. I found it really hard to get into this one.One of the best things about the first book was how realistic it was. Sure Vic is a vampire, but it's set in a very real world of an average work/life cycle. Morbius Reborn however felt like a bit of a leap away - it had somehow lost that realness (starting with the whole Extreme Revamp thing)!I was really pleased to see Eugene get more of a part in this one though, and I thought it was a genius idea to have him date Vic's daughter. All in all, I still enjoyed this book but not as much as the first. It had its moments, but I found it a bit muddled and very slow to start. I'll definitely still give the next one a bash though, I believe it's going to be a trilogy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed Vampire Vic 2 By I. Ray I enjoyed Vampire Vic 2: Morbius Reborn, though I must say that I liked the first book more. Vampire Vic 2 picks up pretty much where the last book left off. Vic wasn't the same vampire as he was before. He started out more confident and had changed himself. He is in control of himself and his life. All that is about to changed when his new boss shows up at work. He finds himself at odds with him more than he ever has before. To make matters worse his daughter is dating Eugene, a vampire slayer that wants him dead. When it is discovered that his treatments to make him human again has been tampered with his life will take another turn, but will it end up being for the best? Or will it end up turning out all wrong. He must navigate through the maze of people that are trying to manipulate him or want him to be something he is not to figure out who he really is. Many think he is Morbius, his ancestor, reborn, while others just think he is a nuisance that needs to be taken care of. When his family is threatened he must rise up against the odds to save himself and them. Will he be able to or will he find he is lacking?I liked this installment in the Vampire Vic trilogy and look forward to reading the conclusion. The only complaint that I have is the cliffhanger ending. But that is to be expected since the story will continue in the next book. I would recommend Vampire Vic 2: Morbius Reborn to those how enjoy non cookie cutter vampire stories. There is more to it than your typical slayers, fangs, and love interests.

As dodgy English towns go, Mangel doesn’t look like much, but it’s everything to Royston Blake. In Mangel, Blake is head doorman at Hoppers Wine Bar & Bistro, drives a Ford Capri 2.8i, and generally has no trouble getting laid. On any given day, he can walk the streets of his town knowing he’s respected by one and all. That is, until a rumor begins to circulate that Blake’s “lost his bottle,” and everything goes to hell. Even his best mates Fin and Legsy have heard the talk that the formerly hard-living bruiser has gone soft, lost his edge, and become a pushover in a town where he can ill afford it. To make matters worse, the Munton brothers are after him, and the thought of ending up in the back of their notorious Meat Wagon is almost too much to bear. Something’s gotta give, but it sure as hell won’t be Blake. What ensues is an outrageously bloody showdown that will leave a permanent scar on the grubby face of Blake’s beloved West Country town. Deadfolk is a brutal black comedy that introduces a wholly original voice to the ranks of literature’s most memorable protagonists. ‘Charlie Williams has come up trumps... just enjoy the ride’ ― The Guardian ‘Dripping with pitch black comedy and panache... this is compelling and highly enjoyable, albeit not for the squeamish’ ― The Third Alternative

Deadfolk (The Mangel Series), by Charlie Williams

Amazon.com Review A Q&A with Charlie Williams Question: Can you sum up Deadfolk in no more than 25 words?

Charlie Williams: A small-town bouncer’s courage is questioned, undermining his self-image as a local big-shot. Taking some bad advice, he sets about trying to prove himself. Things don't work out. Q: Can you sum up your "hero" Royston Blake in a couple of sentences? CW: A violent, ignorant thug with delusions of grandeur. But can we blame him, considering his environment?   Q: What was your motivation for writing your Royston Blake series? CW: I had tried writing several novels set in the world I lived in, but none of those really caught fire. Then I started writing something new, and the main character’s voice came out stronger and more clearly than anything I had written. He seemed to be inspired by a few guys I used to know as a teenager, whose whole view of life revolved around a misplaced concept of what it is to be a man. Along with his voice came the setting--a hellish exaggeration of my home town (Worcester, U.K.) which insisted on being called Mangel. When the story started taking shape, I wanted it to be the British equivalent of one of those small town American noir novels by guys like Jim Thompson. Whether or not it turned out like that, who cares? It got the damn thing done.   Q: There is a lot of "bad" language in Deadfolk and the other books in the series. Do you think this limits the readership? CW: I hope not. Royston Blake swears a lot, as do many people around him. But he is not really aware of it--he uses swear words like punctuation, to fill gaps and give rhythm to his sentences. This is just the way his voice came to me, and I didn't want to tinker with it. We all think these words, Royston Blake just says them aloud. For him, there is very little divide between his thoughts and his speech. And his actions.   Q: You write crime fiction from the criminal perspective. What is it about this that interests you? CW: I have tried having a policeman or some sort of investigator as the hero, but those characters always turn bad on me and reveal themselves as worse than the guys they are chasing. I'm not sure if I can explain this obsession with "differently moralled" protagonists. Maybe it's because I can always see both sides of an argument, and it tends to be the accused/perpetrator/transgressor who has the more flexible outlook on things. Cops and other seekers of justice are always dogmatic. I guess I like dogmatic characters too, but only so I can show how absurd they are.   Q: What do you think is the key is to getting humour right in crime fiction? CW: I don't try to make things funny. I never look for a joke and never think "three pages without a laugh--I'm losing it!" But these moments just suggest themselves as I am writing, and I grab them and shine them up. I think a lot of writers shut themselves off from that side. Many crime writers seem to think their work has to be grim and 100% serious--"we are dealing with REAL HUMAN TRAGEDIES here, folks. It's NOT FUNNY." I say it is funny. Remember at school, when the teacher was talking about something of the utmost gravity, and you caught that look from your classmate? You have to laugh, don't you? You know you shouldn't--that it's the most inappropriate thing to do--but that only makes it funnier. It makes it the funniest thing in the world.

Warped, Menacing, Hilarious By Doug F Deadfolk stars Royston Blake -- a guy you would not enjoy bumping into down a dark alley but you will love on the page. He is a pub doorman with troubles, and his attempts at getting past them lead to one crime after another. All he wants is to be a respected pillar of the community. He has the physical stature but lacks self-awareness, and winds up getting and giving nothing but grief. The book is populated with characters that you can almost smell -- even before they wind up dead and rotting. The setting -- the town of "Mangel" -- is English backwater by way of the Twilight Zone, and the ripe language reflects that. But really it's not that far removed from midwest or Tex vernacular. There were some words I just did not know but I kind of rode the context -- you're not going to miss any big plot points over them. Also the local argot gets you more involved in the surroundings. When you look at this place you can see how someone like Royston Blake can happen. You kind of feel for him.I recommend Deadfolk to anyone who favors originality, knows how to laugh, and doesn't baulk at some nastiness. This is a book that reads well and is SO different from the usual fare. Royston Blake is a real piece of work.

Charlie Williams is a major writing talent poised to make an American debut with this novel from his 'Mangel' quartet (if that is the last in the series.) This series has attracted European attention and translation (heaven knows how the translation works since the narrative relies on English slang words.) 'R' or 'X-rated' for violence, sadism, sex and language, 'Deadfolk' is nevertheless a compulsive read and an incisive look into a world of dysfunctional masculinity, where strength, survivalist self-reliance, macho image and sexual gratification count for far too much. No normal person would want to live anywhere near the series' antihero, Royston Blake. Granted, Blake does not have an easy set of circumstances to deal with: he may be psychotic and a sociopath, he only has brute force with which to make his way in the world and he was born into a dark environment of such gravitational force that few could escape from it...and he has tried. The entire work is narrated in a low-class industrial English slang that is heavy with synonyms for sex equipment and for sexual stereotypes for men who 'have lost it.' Royston Blake has 'lost his bottle' (courage) in this work and his lot in life is to fight to get it back. The major mystery of the book is what/who really killed his wife, Beth, and the events dance back and forth to answer that question with a murky sort of reality that pervades the whole story. Many Williams fans see dark humor in many of the scenes: I can almost see it but my vision is not strong that way and I am more apt to see the tragic side of these scenes. Dare I say that this work is a 'beach read?' It is a page-turner that I would not want to undertake just prior to bed time.

If you stick with it you will be able to interpret the words according to content.Blake is a doorman/bouncer for a local pub. When he doesn't stand up to one of the Munster brothers the rumor spreads that he has lost his bottle/courage. When he sets out to restore his reputation everything starts going downhill. Murders, disappearing bodies, betrayal by his mates. Had to laugh at the attempts at disguise and his weird code of ethics...never hit a bird(woman). If you laughed at the wood-chipper scene in the movie "Fargo" you will find this book hilarious. This is not your usual thriller/mystery but good for a change of pace.
