Wong 'Laid Out and Candle Lit' is one of those books that you don't want to take to the doctor's office to read while you are waiting! That is because you will get stares from the others in the waiting room because you will be laughing so hard!I am very impressed with Ann Everett's new book. It is so loaded with humor and local flavor and hooks you on the first page through to the end. She puts just the right amount of details to make you feel that you are sweltering in Texas heat, smelling the muffins bursting with blueberries and hear the constant gossip of a very small town. All the main characters are fully developed and the pace of this book is very fast. Ann Everett makes the little town of Brownsboro come alive.Tizzy Donovan, 25 years old, a widow with a darling daughter, Gracie, talks to the dead in the Jenkins cemetery every morning on her jog. She is stubborn, a great cook, a loving mother and after five years without sex, ripe for cupid's arrow. On one particular morning she finds a body near her husband's grave.Ridge Cooper is a new Texas Ranger who has previous law enforcement experience and gets assigned to this case. He wants to prove himself with this case and worries about being attracted to Tizzy as she is one of the suspects. He does see much in the way of stores when he comes to town and thinks to himself that the victim was probably "bored to death". But as the mystery unravels he finds something very tangled and a lot of the secrets of this small town are revealed.I don't want to give away who the murder victim is or any of the mystery. Everything fell neatly in place at the end. But I really enjoyed this mystery set in north east Texas with characters such as Bubba, Sugarpie and Pattiecake. There is romance, sex done with a lot of humor and a deep appreciation for the good cooking. There is a recipe in the back for 'Chocolate Coconut Pecan Pie' that I would love to try if I wasn't pre-diabetic.The next book in this series is 'You're Busting My Nuptials' and I want to be sure to read it.I recommend this book to cozy mystery readers and anyone who enjoys laughing.I received this book as a win from GoodReads and that in no way influenced my review.

Some parts of this book are so funny I had tears running down my face. The tale with the skunk is such clever writing. I really wasn't sure who the killer was. Surprising facts were uncovered with each character, especially how the murder victim's life kept evolving and dissolving. You have to buy the second book just to figure out what new mysteries will be uncovered. It certainly keeps you on your toes and makes your mind work in trying to sift through the evidence, or lack of. This is one book you have to read, you won't be sorry.

By ladycamper I started reading this earlier today thinking I would read an hour or so and then get back to the laundry, making the beds etc. That was this morning. I did not put it down until I read every word. Not your run-of-the-mill murder mystery to be sure and you will immediately love Tizzy and Ridge and the assorted characters calling Brownboro home. Ms. Everett weaves a tale so deftly with twists and turns you don't see coming and then caps it off with humor in the most - unusual - situations that will have you laughing out loud. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a wonderful escape full of murder, mystery and healthy dose of laughter. Can't wait to pick up Bustin' My Nuptials!

There is so much going on, not very nice things around us.Things that make us think what if something happens to us, how do we get ready for such situations. It is not easy to be withour electricity and internet. The book provides the basic information what to stockpile, and people often ask how much to stock, but the answer is simple, as much as the space allows you. Having a lot of food is great, but one has to think how to prepare it, too. There are also skills to be learned and mastered like learning to purify the water, how to find and grow food, learn about first aid..Very good guide!

I think it could have been a little bit more detailed though. I would rather not go back and show each example of editing errors or give examples as to why I think there should be more detail as I am not one to take much time giving reviews unless I love or hate the review. I am in the middle, therefore the 3.

A Top 10 Science Book of Fall 2015 - Publishers WeeklyA star science journalist with Parkinson's reveals the inner workings of this perplexing disease Seven million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson's, and doctors, researchers, and patients continue to hunt for a cure. In Brain Storms, the award-winning journalist Jon Palfreman tells their story, a story that became his own when he was diagnosed with the debilitating illness. Palfreman chronicles how scientists have worked to crack the mystery of what was once called the shaking palsy, from the earliest clinical descriptions of tremors, gait freezing, and micrographia to the cutting edge of neuroscience, and charts the victories and setbacks of a massive international effort to best the disease. He takes us back to the late 1950s and the discovery of L-dopa. He delves into a number of other therapeutic approaches to this perplexing condition, from partial lobotomies and deep brain stimulation to neural grafting. And he shares inspiring stories of brave individuals living with Parkinson's, from a former professional ballet dancer who tricks her body to move freely again to a patient who cannot walk but astounds doctors when he is able to ride a bicycle with no trouble at all. With the baby boom generation beginning to retire and the population steadily aging, the race is on to discover a means to stop or reverse neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Brain Storms is the long-overdue, riveting, and deeply personal story of that race, and a passionate, insightful, and urgent look into the lives of those affected.

“Brain Storms is well worth checking out, whether you are a new or old patient, a significant other of someone with Parkinson’s disease, or simply a curious reader, as the book is as much about the science of the disease as it is about the brave people living with it . . . Jon also writes about his own journey as a patient, and does so with captivating candor, curiosity, and inspiring hope.” ―Anna Tan, Parkinson’s News Today

But if at bottom, what you want out of a science book is clean prose, clear thought and fascinating stories, Palfreman delivers.” ―Doug Clifton, Miami Herald

Great book, missing a chapter By mle nevin Brain Storms is an excellent overview of the discovery and research (as of the end of 2014) on Parkinson's Disease, written for people who have been diagnosed or are close to someone who has Parkinson's.Jon Palfreman is that most valuable of persons, a layman who has written the book he wished he had found. Brain Storms is easy to read (Palfreman is a teacher of journalism), written in a compelling narrative non-fiction style. It will give you the history and context to understand patients, care-givers, doctors, and researchers who are dealing with Parkinson's.My only criticism of the book is that there is no chapter dealing in depth with dementia. Although only a relatively small percentage of Parkinson's patients develop dementia, it is a tremendous tragedy and a huge problem for the families to whom it happens. It appears that many neurologists are focused on movement symptoms and are slow to recognize cognitive problems, although there are medications that can be effective. Mr. Palfreman's book does make clear that Parkinson's and Lewy Body Disease are the same thing, Parkinson's primarily in the midbrain that controls movement, LBD primarily in the cortex that controls cognition. If you need information on dementia, Googling "Lewy Body Disease" will put you in touch with a community of experts and family members who have shared their experience and learning. Mr. Palfreman's book makes the connection that will give you confidence you're on the right track.I hope Mr. Palfreman will update this book regularly. It is an important contribution to the layperson's understanding of Parkinson's Disease.

On the one hand you have books that describe the science accurately, mentioning all sources of uncertainty, but then fails to convey the implications in an interesting manner. Then there are books that use the science like a drunken man uses a light post - for support rather than illumination. Such books can give you a gripping story and then a few references are thrown in to make the story seem credible, but they fail to explain the science behind the story. This book finds the perfect sweet-spot in that it describes the in an intriguing but fair manner while also continually reminding the reader what the science means for the reader - whether that is someone afflicted with Parkinson or someone who is just interested in the disease. The story is told in a chronological manner, beginning with James Parkinson who first described the syndrome/disease that now bears his name. In the 1960s, more than a century after, came the first effective treatments for the disease. Levadopa (L-Dopa), a dopamine pre-cursor, showed promising results at first. What I didn’t know is that in the first blind study there was no difference between patients receiving Levadopa, and the group receiving a placebo. It was only after some tinkering with the doses that Levadopa became the main drug for alleviating symptoms that it is today.Palfreman’s who himself has Parkinson writes about all the different approaches to curing or alleviating Parkinson, including, L-dopa, neural grafting, deep brain stimulation, growth factors, and viral destruction of misfolded proteins. The stories for these treatments can appear, and often are rather repetitive. It begins with galumphing scientists and foundations who believe they have found a potential cure for Parkinson and that they can make the disease vanish if they are given sufficient funds. Initial “open label” studies often show positive results, but then a blind study reveals that there is no difference between the treatment and a placebo. This seems to be the pattern for all treatments except for Levadopa and deep brain stimulation. Yet it is important to remember that the first Levadopa trial also showed negative results. New trials with new treatments are underway and personally I think that it is a matter of time before we find new treatments for the disease. One type of “treatment” which is also appear to be effective and which is not invasive is exercise. Regular exercise can have a large effect on all symptoms related to the disease. Like with many other types of diseases that afflicts the elderly, it seems crucial to maintain an active lifestyle, both socially and in terms of physical exercise, if you want to slow the disease. Another aspect that Palfreman writes about is the placebo effect, which in the case of Parkinson is very large. One study found that Parkinson patients receiving a sham surgery often showed marked improvements in their symptoms which could last years. It is a shame you cannot manufacture the placebo effect, but the results clearly show that the mindset of the patient with Parkinson can have a surprisingly large effect on the way the disease is perceived.Although I do not have Parkinson and the disease has not been a focal interest in my PhD studies, I was still captivated by Palfreman’s story, and the book really is an excellent book for anyone who want to understand how science progresses. It is a road that is more bumpy than most people tend to think. I think the book is also perfect for someone who has Parkinson because, despite all the setbacks in the field there is still hope. The book does not say that there will be a cure within five or even ten years (which would be unethical to say), but you can still sense the hope that someday (perhaps sooner rather than later), a new effective treatment will come.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. masterful coverage of the science and human aspect By Gregory M. Ferdinand Mlambo, the youngest boy ever to become senior kitchen toto at State House, is in deep trouble. Disloyalty to Kuwisha's Life President Nduka has not only cost him his prestigious job: the sinister chief steward to the president, Lovemore Mboga, has humiliated Mlambo by stripping him of his name. Word goes out: henceforth, he will be known as Fatboy. But with the help of Titus Ntoto, leader of the notorious Mboya Boys gang of street children, Mlambo sets out on a quest to recover his name and dignity.

In this sequel to the acclaimed Last Orders at Harrods, Michael Holman again combines the insights of someone brought up in Africa with the experience of nearly twenty years as the Financial Times’ Africa editor. With a sharp observant pen, he describes a world of abandoned street children, corrupt politicians, well-meaning aid workers, celebrity outsiders, self-deceiving donors, and the resilient residents of Kireba―Kuwisha’s worst slum―where the worldly but compassionate Mrs. Charity Mupanga presides over the popular rendezvous, Harrods International Bar (and Nightspot).

Review 'Holman writes some of the most insightful novels about Africa' Today programme

About the Author Michael Holman grew up in Zimbabwe and was educated in Africa and England. He is the author of Last Orders at Harrods and former Africa editor of the Financial Times.

From AudioFile Jerome Pride's narration is spot-on in Michael Holman's sequel to LAST ORDER AT HARRODS. FATBOY is a stinging look at politicians, aid-agency workers, and the local population of Kuwisha, a fictional East African country. Pride avoids stereotyping the larger-than-life characters Holman creates, offering a controlled, understated performance. He captures the sharp-tongued Mrs. Charity Tangwenya Mupanga, owner of Harrods International Bar (and Nightspot), where much of the action occurs; the disgraced Ferdinand Mlambo, who must now carry the name "Fatboy"; and the assortment of politicos and do-gooders who alternately help and harm the nation. Holman, former Africa editor for Britain's FINANCIAL TIMES, takes everyone to task with his scathing wit--from street children to clueless but well-meaning social organizations. Through it all, Pride turns in a winning performance. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine

Once again set in Kireba, the largest slum in the small East African nation of Kuwisha, it follows on immediately from the events of the first book, Last Orders at Harrods. Business is good at the popular Harrods International Bar (and Nightspot), but widowed owner, Charity Mupanga is worried about the behaviour of her suitor, Edward Furniver, manager of the micro-lending bank nearby: could he have a drinking problem? Two of the glue-sniffing Mboya Boys, Titus Ntoto and Cyrus Rutere enjoy Charity's patronage but are worried about their friend (and stowaway on the London flight), Bright Khumato. Bright's arrival in London prompts the Clarion newspaper to send their ambassador for Nose-Aid, TV personality Geoffrey Japer to Kuwisha to publicise a scheme to swap debt for saving endangered rhinos and help street kids at the same time. Meanwhile, in disgrace for disloyalty to the lifelong President, Josiah Nduka, ex-State House kitchen toto, Ferdinand Mlambo is determined to get revenge on his boss, Lovemore Mboga. Mboga, in turn, is concerned about what the slum's women are up to in their Christian Ladies Sewing Circle. And Mildred and Didymus Kigali feel that life would run more smoothly if everyone would just join the Church of the Blessed Lamb. A delightfully satirical look at life in modern Africa that touches on: colonisation, independence, third-world debt and aid; aid organisations and their many acronyms, conferences and schemes; politics and corruption; newspapers, journalists and photoshopping images; and the quality of third-world rubbish. Holman's background in Africa and his intimate knowledge of journalism are apparent in every paragraph. Holman's characters are engaging and his descriptions are evocative. While it is part of a trilogy, as a novel it is strong enough to stand alone. It is funny and perceptive, and readers will look forward to the last novel in the trilogy, Dizzy Worms.

I did get a little irritated at the repetition of some parts of the story from the fist book, isn't it assumed that one should read this as the 2nd in the trilogy so should know the story and not need the back ground explanations.Once one gets over the authors need to thinly disguise Kenya and Kibera...it makes good reading. I liked it.

I am struggling to finish the book - structure is poor; and writing is bland and predictable - especially given the location and characters.
