Once a newcomer to the town, a transient guest at Mrs. Otterbuck’s boarding house, spoke about it to old Squire Jonas, who lived next door to where the lights blazed of nights, and the answer he got makes a fitting enough binning for this account.” Cobb is remembered best for his humorous stories of Kentucky and is part of the American literary regionalism school. These stories were collected first in the book Old Judge Priest (1915), whose title character was based on a prominent West Kentucky judge named William Pitman Bishop. Writer Joel Harris wrote of these tales, “Cobb created a South peopled with honorable citizens, charming eccentrics, and loyal, subservient blacks, but at their best the Judge Priest stories are dramatic and compelling, using a wealth of precisely rendered detail to evoke a powerful mood."Among his other books are the humorous Speaking of Operations (1916), and anti-prohibition ode to bourbon, Red Likker (1929).

By Simona Elena *Book received by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*This is the first Juliette Sobanet book I’ve read and I’m glad I did, because she’s a great writer. I’ve heard so many great things about her books and then when I saw an open tour for Honeymoon in Paris I grabbed the chance and signed up.So here we are, this book is actually the sequel to Sleeping With Paris, but you can also read it as a stand alone, I did as well and there is enough information for us to get into the story and of what happened before.Charlotte is a lovely character and I liked that the fact the she’s an American in Paris, Lyon (France) teaching English and French.Paris is an amazing city and it’s great reading about The city of Lights in books.Charlotte is on her honeymoon with Luc her husband. He planned amazing things, but then everything turns upside down. Luc’s ex-wife and the mother of his cute daughter Adeline Brigitte comes into the picture. She’s a famous actress and dating Vincent Boucher. Vincent is the father of Nicholas and Marcel (two French actors) and he was also married to Luc’s mother (after his father ended up in prison).There is also the fact that Luc has a lot of secrets and he doesn’t want Charlotte to know the truth. Then he suddenly leaves Paris, because Adeline is sick in Lyon. Charlotte spends her last night in Paris with her two best friends Lexi and Fiona and they end up with the Boucher brothers. They next morning they remember nothing and it gets worse it’s all over the tabloids. Of course Luc and also their boyfriends find out. Back home the drama increases, Char loses her job and has to look for a new one. She doesn’t tell Luc. It’s also that her new job is at Bella Magazine in Lyon with Victor Boucher.Char is determined to find out what Luc is not telling her, she knows it’s all connected with Brigitte, Victor and his sons. Luc still isn’t saying a word and exactly knows how to make Char forget everything.These two are made for each other, that was clear from the start. I didn’t Luc being so secretive all the time though.The story is full of drama, mystery and love.I loved the scene where Charlotte tried to cheer Adeline up with the penguin story, that was so adorable.Char took matters into her own hands, trying to find out what was going on. The drama increases dramatically and there is even some danger.Lexi and Fiona have their own story developed in this book and I liked the three girls together, real friends.Only at the end, when all the drama is solved, Luc tells everyone the truth…I couldn’t put the book down. It was dramatic, myserious and still sweet and, gripping and adorable. Sme things were a little over the top for me, so I can only give 4 coffee cups, it’s still a great book!

Loves, lies, chocolates and great story line surprises By FrenchVillageDiaries Charlotte Summers, the heroine of the delicious chick lit novel Sleeping with Paris (A Paris Romance) is back and has been whisked down the aisle and married her Half-Naked French Hottie, Luc. We join them enjoying the life of luxury on honeymoon in Paris before they return to Lyon to take up teaching positions and settle into married life. However all is not the wedded bliss she thought it would be as she begins to discover secrets Luc has kept from her, including the identity of his ex-wife and Mother of his four-year-old daughter. She realises she doesn't actually know much about Luc's past and at each turn she seems to bump into high-profile, shady characters Luc is unwilling to discuss with her. Having led her best friends into a scandal and desperate for answers to put things right, she is left to turn detective alone. Has Charlotte just made the biggest mistake of her life? Is her new husband all she thought he was? Is her new life going to be at all how she thought it would be?Anyone who has read any of Juliette's other novels will recognise her unique style, her mouth-watering pastry descriptions and fun twists, turns and surprises. There were times when Charlottes over-explaining of her reasons annoyed me a little, but this was just a minor niggle in an otherwise exciting novel that had some nail-biting moments. It was lovely to be back in one of Juliette's novels and yet again she leaves me wanting a visit to Lyon, complete with chocolate croissants, chocolate fondant and chocolates. Although I recommend reading Sleeping with Paris (A Paris Romance) it isn't necessary to have read it to enjoy this book.

I love Juliette's writing style and she swept me into the story from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. The settings in Paris and Lyon are skillfully weaved into the storyline so you don't feel like you're reading a travel brochure.Will we see another book with Charlotte and Luc? I don't know but I'd be at the head of the line to get a copy should there be.

A Voyage to the Moon By Steven Davis Joseph Atterley of New York, finding himself in the doldrums after the death of his wife, resolves in 1822 to undertake a sea voyage to the Far East on one of his father's merchant ships. In the Indian Ocean the ship is caught by a mighty cyclone and driven ashore somewhere in the Burmese Empire. Mistaking the Americans for their enemies the British, the Burmese take Atterley and the crew captive. Atterley is eventually placed under rather loose house arrest, which allows him to meet and befriend a reclusive Indian Brahman who lives in the nearby hills. One day the Brahman reveals an astonishing secret: he knows how to build a machine to fly to the moon, and has already been there and back twice.George Tucker was a Bermuda-born Virginian, a former Congressman, a friend of Thomas Jefferson and professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Virginia. In addition to A Voyage to the Moon he would publish a number of books on history, biography, economics and political philosophy. Ever since Utopia and Gulliver's Travels, the "fantastic voyage" genre had been a popular vehicle for political and social satire, as well as for Utopian conjectures. Tucker would cleverly use his lunar civilization to both satirize American culture and public life and to propose an ideal society.The moon vehicle Atterley and the Indian construct is a cube made of copper and reinforced against the vaccuum of space with iron bars. Its source of motive power is a metal discovered by the Brahman which, which separated from other ores, repels the gravitational force of the earth. He calls it lunarium because it is attracted to the moon to the same degree that it is repelled by the earth. The Indian has also discovered that lead has opposite properties, being repelled by the moon just as strongly as it is attracted to the earth. They bolt large plates and smaller spheres of these two element to the outside of their spacecraft in such a way that they can be released individually by a screw mechanism from inside the cabin. Dropping some of the lead allows to craft to ascend from the earth, and the attractive powers of lunarium automatically steers it toward the moon. When approaching the moon, the pilot drops lunarium so that his descent can be slowed by the remaining lead. The trip takes several days, so they carry compressed air in spherical tanks affixed to the outside of the craft.Tucker's spacecraft design is imminently practical, and would no doubt be workable if there were such a thing as lunarium. (The idea would be revisited decades later by H. G. Wells in The First Men in the Moon.) Likewise his description of the how the ascent path is affected by the earth's rotation, how the earth would look from space and from the moon's surface, and the effects of lower gravity on the moon are all completely accurate. In political matters the author's prescience is even more uncanny. He predicts that the United States would eventually span the North American continent, whereas the nations of South America would remain disunited and weakened by civil wars. He projects a population for the country in the early 21st century of "three or four hundred millions" with a declining birth rate, and said at that time the U.S. would be the most powerful nation on earth with Russia as its chief rival.The people that Atterley and the Brahman find on the moon are of our own species. This is because the moon was once part of the earth, it's separation leading to the formation of the Pacific Ocean. (This is a theory which some scientists still hold, but of course it would have happened long before the appearance of life on earth.)For the most part the lunarians are ridiculous people whose customs lampoon the fashions and political excesses of Tucker's native land. Some women, for example, dress completely in feathers, while others wear caged butterflies on their heads. The more daring and shapely moon maids wear dresses in which "were inserted glasses like watch crystals, adapted to the form and size of the female bosom." Religious sects eat only the worst part of plants and animals and think it superior to descend stairs by walking backwards.But there is one isolated community in one of the moon's circular valleys (craters) where everything has been designed for the best. Democracy is practiced without demagoguery, trade flourishes without poverty, each man and woman is educated at public expense to his or her full potential, religion has no place in public life, and criminals are reeducated rather than punished. One of the keys to this paradise is that the citizens have calculated exactly how many people their valley can optimally support, and have found the means to keep their population at that level. Atterley wonders how the lunarians can restrain the natural growth in population. The Brahman hints at birth control and says it is already secretly practiced in Asia, but in the United States it "might do more harm than good to be made public, by removing one of the checks of licentiousness, where women are so unrestrained as they are with you."As an adventure story, A Voyage to the Moon lacks suspense. Its satire is amusing at times, but not exceptional in any way. Tucker's utopian society is intriguing, chiefly for its pragmatism, but this is only a small portion of the novel. What I found most appealing about the novel was how astutely the author managed to foresee the future and to view his own world and his own culture as an outsider. The author also comes across as an affable, ingenious, iconoclastic and practical sort of man it would be a delight to know in person. I suspect there is a lot of Tucker's late friend and neighbor Thomas Jefferson in this novel.

Markiewicz If you remember this book was published in 1825 (before there were significant railroads in the US, much less the high tech of a moonshot) you'll be ok. The moon-ship is pressurized, and steerable, but flies via an antigravity material similar to the "unobtanium" in Avatar or the "cavorite" in H.G. Wells' First Men in The Moon.The story follows standard "Utopia" style dating from Moore's original Utopia. It is a study of culture more than the impact of technology.To this point - the moon-people are really close cousins of Earth. The author uses a popular theory at the time - that the moon "pinched off" the earth early in its history via electrical interactions in the crust. This explains the, very human inhabitants, who are related to some Asian cultures.Most of the story is devoted to behavior of Americans in the 1820s, satirized by using various Moon people and nations as a descriptive tool. Various tribe of Moon people act like America gone to excess.What struck me was how "American" the ideals in the writing now. Tucker, a progressive, admires the same things we do in the American spirit today, though he also thought they could go to excess. Religion, constant new inventions and tech, strange family rituals all seem about the USA. His foil, a guru from India on the moon voyage with the hero, provides a foil.The novel structure is a bit dated - if you've never read anything before the 20th century, you may initially find the plot over-emphasizing some details at the expense of others.A good example of America Utopian writing with a bit of space travel built in. Later writers, e.g. Jules Verne, Percy Greg, and H.G. Wells may have been aware of this book - some similar devices are used, especially by Greg in "Across the Zodiac"

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious and not just for men! By Heather Moulton "Love in the RV Park" is the second novel I've read by Ross, and he doesn't disappoint! I recognize myself and others in the characters in and around the RV park; the social commentary is biting but not so acidic as to sting too much. My favorite character is Old Sol, who drinks too much and waxes poetically about men, women, America, beer, and love. One of my favorite quotes by Sol: "Why are there so many beer commercials? People would buy beer anyway." Truer words have never been uttered. I also chose the perfect time to read the novel as it takes place around Christmas and New Years (and the New Year's Eve party at the RV park is not one to miss). If you enjoy satire, and even if you've never lived in an RV park, you'll enjoy this romantic romp through Americana.

Ross illustrates in satirical fashion that a woman does, indeed, know exactly what she wants. And if she does not, that's okay. She'll figure it out for herself.
