The endearingly hilarious tale about a young Gnome who strikes out on his own!

Gappy Whirligig is an industrious Gnome who has yet to reach the Age of Tinkering. He's 42. But, as anyone who lives in the Gnome town of Hubintegler can tell you, things have a way of exploding when least expected. In a flash, Gappy's life flips upside down, leaving him to make the decision to either strike out on his own or become a 42-year-old foster child. Gappy demonstrates his industrious spirit as he leaves Hubintegler's rules and regulations behind and instead seeks to make his mark in the seedy town of Planoontik. Along with his Orc assistant, Shrit, Gappy fights through the red tape of starting a business, running a business, dealing with the local Halfia (the Halfling Mafia), and battling the competition. The land of Ononokin gets its influence as a hodgepodge from Monty Python, National Lampoon, Family Guy, Terry Pratchett, Discworld, Robert Asprin, Myth Adventures, Piers Anthony, Xanth, Douglas Adams, Harry Harrison, and countless other comedic mediums. Readers will find a new, fun, comedic fantasy world to play in. Wizards, magic, Dwarfs, Orcs, Ogres, Trolls, Gnomes, Halflings, Vampires, Zombies, Dragons, Gorgans, and more fill the vastness of Ononokin.

The main character, Gappy Whirligig, is a likeable industrious young Gnome who sets out to accomplish his life’s dream. There are also many other great characters in this story. This is light comedy fantasy and is not epic or high fantasy, it is more like Pratchett than Tolkien.

By Amazon Customer Gappy's Gadgets is pure laugh-out-loud fun!  The characters are unique and engaging.  The plot is fast-paced and entertaining.  And the comedy is hilarious.  I couldn't put it down -- I finished the book in one sitting.  (As a caution to other readers, I must warn you that if you stay up till 3:00am reading this book as I did, you may find yourself kicked out of the bedroom by a sleepy spouse who does not understand what could possibly be so funny in the middle of the night.  Rest assured, this book is worth annoying your spouse over -- it's that funny). I loved the way Logson and Young created such laughable, lovable, relatable characters -- even their villains.  I also loved the way they combined the absurd with the mundane to create humor.  These two talented writers definitely know how to delight readers.I hope that Logson and Young plan to write more Ononokin books (4 is not enough!) because I will be eagerly waiting to read them.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it.

An enjoyable ride through a rather strange yet familiar world By murphyfields Disclaimer: I was given a draft copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed it enough that I bought the released version just to see how things changed. I am a geek who likes those sorts of things. This is a fun book and a joy to read. Great character development. Several laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of giggles. My only complaint is that I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen early on in the book, and that kept away the tension I like to feel when a character I love is in danger. Of course (*spoiler alert*) the hero will win and the villain will lose, but I want to have just a few moments of doubt. That lowered my rating from 5 stars to 4.Overall, the fantasy world is well developed, and there were many times where I was introduced to a new character and thought "I have met this person" even though the character might be an orc or a troll.

These adult fairy tales are contemporary, smart and very clever; Jason Antoon has tapped into our vanities, insecurities and obsessions, and transformed them into stories for the modern age. One cannot help but smile while reading these tales, yet each has a sobering ring of truth to it. The author has a fresh, witty voice, and this collection is a delightful read!

My fav was The Americn Flag Blanket and the title story but I actually liked them all. Would be cool as a Netflix series to bookend Black Mirror.

By Scott Although one might venture to say that a lot has been written about MIB's ... in book form - I'm here to tell you, reader, that if you haven't read Nick Redfern - you don't know very much about Men In Black. The man does his research, and has that rare ability to relay said research onto paper in such fashion as to raise the hackles of even veterans of the phenomenon, and for those who may be new, you're in for the read of your life if this subject matter interests you - as it probably does if you're reading this review. I will only state further, that if this is your first taste of Redfern - then ALL of his books are a MUST READ ... everyone of them. 5 HUGE Stars - the guy doesn't let up. Read it, absorb it, and watch your back! Then decide if your world view hasn't derailed once you've read his work(s)!! We are fortunate to have Nick in our midst - and writing for us!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. THIS BOOK SCARED ME By FROM TEXAS, NOT CRAZY This book scared the bejeezus out of me. I had not only never fully understood the Men in Black phenom and was further introduced to the Black-Eyed Children and the Grinning Cowboy. I suddenly understood a bunch of characters I had seen in David Lynch movies. As Redfern suggests, Men in Black love to play on phones and I experienced their interference shortly after reading the book. I am a complete believer that these entities are about and I have no idea what they want. Seems no one else does either. Fascinating stuff.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Odd Mix... By P Jerome Not as much high strangeness as Nick's last MIB outing, but makes for a good read. Some of the personal stories were very much "out there", sounding more like full-blown psychosis rather than a normal person's encounter with the bizarre. A bit of trimming would have made this a 5-star effort, but no worries, one can never get enough of Mr. Redfern.

On October 16th, 1998, a lone gunman entered Piney Hills High School and murdered thirty-seven people. It was then believed that the assailant took his own life, leaving many unanswered questions but nonetheless bringing a sense of closure to the community. Unfortunately, everyone was mistaken, and the actual gunman escaped both the attack on the school and any form of justice. Now an adult, Robert Higgins, the perpetrator of the worst school shooting in history, has decided to give a tell-all account of how he got away with his crime. Clearly a deeply disturbed individual, he relishes in describing all the stages of his planning and preparation, from obtaining the weapons used, to choosing his victims, to the actual framing of the teenager blamed for his own actions. But the story goes much deeper than that. In his recount, Robert reveals his bizarre inner-thought processes and gives clues as to what his ultimate motives were. Admittedly, Robert is a character that draws little sympathy. His acts are despicable, and as a person, he is unredeemable. Yet, like a horrific traffic accident that one cannot turn away from, his narrative draws the reader in and compels them forward. This is far more than a story of bloodshed; it is a look at how a monster is created and the terrible hatred that drives them to commit such acts of violence. The book offers commentary on the United States' lax gun regulations and other social policies that contribute to the prevalence of mass murders in the country. It also highlights the need for improved screening for and treatment of mental illness, especially among young people. While this is entirely a work of fiction, this novel sadly draws from events that are all too real. The violence depicted is graphic at times, but it is hardly exaggerated from what has been seen in many of the most recent mass-shootings. NO REASON IS REASON ENOUGH is somewhat difficult to categorize as a novel, but falls somewhere between the true-crime and psychological-thriller genres. Fans of Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho" and Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club" will particularly like this book, but it should find an audience with anyone willing to delve into the darker aspects of society.

No Reason Is Reason Enough, by Marc Anderson

About the Author Marc Anderson grew up in Spring, Texas, just outside of Houston. He attended St. Thomas High School, and went on to study biology and biochemistry at the University of Houston. After earning his undergraduate degrees, Marc spent several years bouncing around graduate programs (and a brief stint in vet school), before returning to the University of Houston and earning his Ph.D. in Cell Biology. The mind numbing title of his dissertation was "An Account of Chemical and Mechanical Regulation of TRPC6 Channels in Podocytes." Unfulfilled with conducting hours of research alone in a room without windows, Marc left science to pursue careers in both writing and web-design. Despite some difficulties, he still believes that this was a wise decision. Marc currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his two dogs, Sam and Bruce. He considers himself a pessimistic realist and is a real blast at parties. This is his first attempt at writing a novel.

Dark, disturbing and silently clever By Ajoobacats No Reason is Reason Enough is a psychological thriller, which reads as a genuine memoir of a mass shooter and sociopath, who appears to have got away with a school shooting killing thirty-seven and injuring three. The book is told from this heinous antagonists point of view and although our fictional author claims to be telling us how he did what he did, the why is eloquently conveyed too. Interspersed with the account of his upbringing and the lead up to his plans are quite graphic accounts of what occurred during the shootings told by our narrator.I honesty found reading this dark thriller easy to get into despite the difficult subject matter. If I had been told this was a story about a true crime and not a fictional account of a fictional shooter I would have had no trouble believing this, which is a true testament to author Mark Anderson. Anderson not only wrote a gripping account of a shooter but he cleverly disseminates the apathy and distorted ideas courted by our main character.Disturbing, dark and utterly intriguing, this book was an absolute nail-biting read and I recommend it to those who want a bit of realism and social commentary alongside a gripping story.

This is a collection of fun stories that pokes a little gentle fun at the Watson-esque recorder of the stories (who gets a little swindled on at least one occasion) but combines the fun of the skilled thief who just can't resist making a steal every now and then - but never from someone who can't afford to lose a little - and has a spirit of fair play with the skill of the detective who notices everything. Even if you've only got a passing acquaintance with Holmes, you can enjoy these stories. One note: there are a few uses of period racist language, such as this one when a character is listening to minstrel music:“He’s suffering from a bad attack of coonitis this evening,” I observed to myself.

The Mystery of Life: How Nothing Became Everything, by Jan Paul Schutten

From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up—How old is the Earth, and how was it formed? How did nonliving atoms evolve into single cell organisms and then into the plethora of species that inhabit the Earth today? How did scientists discover the answers to these questions, and how can they provide proof for their theories? Schutten responds to these queries and countless others as he explains the scientific discoveries that led, over time, to the development of theories such as the big bang and evolution. Taking a big picture approach, he puts all the pieces of the puzzle that comprise our complex world into one accessible, entertaining title, using just the right mixture of fun facts, scientific information, and age-appropriate language. Schutten divides his chapters up into subsections that ask specific questions ("What Are Seashells Doing on Top of a Mountain?") and incorporates complex ideas in his responses. He also peppers his text with interesting tidbits of information. For example, we get goose bumps because our ancestors had fur—which, when it stood on end, provided warmth. Schutten is an award-winning author who argues vehemently for evolution but doesn't exclude those who believe in God and creationism; he encourages his readers to think for themselves. Interspersed liberally throughout the text are clear, rather playful illustrations, which add to the lighthearted and humorous tone. VERDICT A great choice for libraries looking to bolster their STEM collection.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn, NY

Review "A lighthearted view of the universe's progress, from the Big Bang to the evolution of bacteria, bonobos—and 'Joe Schmo from Buffalo.'...[Schutten's] overall account of life's origins and tenure is as rich in detail as it is entertaining." (Kirkus Reviews)"Taking a big picture approach, he puts all the pieces of the puzzle that comprise our complex world into one accessible, entertaining title, using just the right mixture of fun facts, scientific information, and age-appropriate language....Interspersed liberally throughout the text are clear, rather playful illustrations, which add to the lighthearted and humorous tone. A great choice for libraries looking to bolster their STEM collection." (School Library Journal)

About the Author Jan Paul Schutten has been writing children's nonfiction books since 2003. A native of The Netherlands, his books are popular and critically acclaimed; he has won several awards including the Gouden Griffel (Golden Stylus) for his book Children of Amsterdam.
